To say you can still look okay at 13 stone?

I'm 13 stone 7... To my horror! I knew I'd put on a lot rapidly in a short space of time. I'm aware this actually makes me obese. And I need to lose weight for my health

I don't think I look huge though. Definitely not. Might say I'm a bit chubby at a push. Face doesn't look too fat

AIBU to say you can actually be obese and not realise because you don't look 'fat'?

I'm 5'3 so not tall

One inch taller same weight as you. I look and feel like a big heifer and am trying to shift some weight.

blebbleb · 25/03/2023 22:13

Wouldn't that make your bmi almost morbidly obese? I was almost 12 stone at 5 foot 2 and I held the fat quite well but it didn't look great. My bmi was 30. Look and feel much better now I've lost the wight. So bad for your joints and organs.

CaribouCarafe · 25/03/2023 22:20

Since you were wondering what 7.5 stone at 5'2" looks like OP here is me.

I'd love to be a bit curvier but don't think I'm skeletal either.

My weight has never fluctuated and I've never been on a diet, just never had a large appetite and am very small framed.

I think OP has a wider frame and an even weight distribution (plus a lovely waist) which is why she carries the weight so well.

Purplesv · 25/03/2023 22:23

I'm "5'3 weigh 11.5 stone and have had 3 babies in the last 5 years. That probably puts me in the obese category or just under. I wouldn't know as I don't check.

I think I look great when compared to my younger, skinnier self. I had an ED and was so gaunt and frail.

I lift weights. Cycle. Swim. I'm very healthy.

There are "plus sized" people who are healthier than size 4-6 people. I'm certainly alot healthier at this weight than I was smaller.

Most of the women I know are between size 12 - 14 and I don't think any one of them look "obese" or awful dispite what the BMI calculator or people on mumsnet says.

It's so sad to see women feeling so shit about themselves at the weights mentioned throughout the thread.

Somebody saying they're overweight at 9 stone, have a day off ffs.

You have a lovely shapely figure, @CaribouCarafe. You might want to do a bit of contouring on your face though. It's a bit round if you don't mind me saying so.

Can anyone answer this about BMI?

I know I'm overweight and need to lose it for my health long term, I know it to be true (factually obese actually), but NHS website says the bottom end of healthy for me would be 7 stone 11!

When I was just under 8 stone, I was anorexic. Very low body fat percentage and hardly ate 800 calories a day, usually a lot less. Horrific skin and brittle hair and nails. How is that healthy?"

And later corrects it to 7 stone 6 pounds

Haha thank you for not mentioning my extra hand 😉

ScottishLavender · 25/03/2023 22:29

Crikey there's some witches in here!

At 5'6" and 13 stone I'm overweight. I look fat. I know this. I'm trying to lose weight. Menopause doesn't help.

LuluLehman · 25/03/2023 22:35

Some people look amazing whatever size they are. They don't look fat because everything is in proportion - a lot of plus-size models are like this.

Overweight doesn't suit me. I lost quite a lot of weight after being obese and it was only when I lost the weight and looked at my old photos that I realised how big I was. Before I lost it I thought the extra pounds (well, stones) didn't show. They really did show. Big time. And I mean Big.

At your height it is very likely that you look on the big side to others and smaller to yourself. That doesn't mean that you don't look good

Fluffygreenslippers · 25/03/2023 22:44

I’m 5.8, closer to 5.9 and looked okay at 13 stone. Was pear shaped and lifting heavy and had a lot of muscle and carried excess weight in my arse and upper thighs. Looked slim at 12 stone. Looked positively ill at a lower weight, like a lanky spider. Had a lot of people asking if I was okay.

Not sure what I weigh at the moment. About 16 stone i’d guess and I look huge and hate looking in the mirror.

user1471459761 · 25/03/2023 22:54

No, sorry! You are deluded at that height and weight. How we see ourselves and others does vary according to what we are used to and we take time to adjust too ehen we change weight. We aren't judging objectively what we see I'm afraid. Take notice of the actual facts. Not what you think you see.

Well I don't think OP is deluded, I think she looks perfectly nice. Or am I also deluded?

That post doesn’t say she wonders what 7.5 stone looks like.

I doubted posting at all on this thread because on a cursory read, which is all I have done, all the posts seem to want to excuse being overweight. If you want a license to eat you heads off, then fine, go ahead and fill your boots.

I won't be joining you.

I love it when people post to say they aren't posting 🤣

maddiemookins16mum · 25/03/2023 23:11

I’m 5ft 4 and 14 stone. I look fecking awful and know it. My build is not designed to carry the extra 4 stone I am carrying. I need less 🍰🍫🥧🍪 and more 🥗🥦🥬🍉. It is true we’ve lost sight of a ‘normal size’, I’ll gladly accept my bingo card for saying it. I’m too lazy to do anything about it too.

HeyJudeNanananana · 25/03/2023 23:13

I look not bad at 13 stone, but I'm 5'10"

Wish I was that weight right now! I'm overweight and hating life Hmm

surreygirl1987 · 25/03/2023 23:19

I'm almost 14 stone and think I look fairly decent. I am 5 foot 11 though. And possibly deluded.

Phoebo · 25/03/2023 23:23

It all depends on how you dress and your attitude, amd having a pretty face! Colleague at work is quite large and she always looks glamorous and gorgeous. Funnily enough she actually wears quite fitting, but faltering clothes (ie doesn't try and hide in sacks)

BeautifulWar · 26/03/2023 08:03

The BMI range is very broad because people have different bone structures.

I'm a medium build and there is no way I could be healthy at the lowest listed weight, but I would be fat at the top end. Someone with a small build would be fat at my optimal weight and someone large framed would look underweight.

That people don't understand that, to me, shows how warped our thinking is regarding weight.

TheDogthatDug · 26/03/2023 08:09

I'm 5ft 2 and once hit 12 stone, I looked and felt awful. I was a small fat woman.

WollyWinka · 26/03/2023 08:14

Why one extreme or the other @sayitaintsobow ?

There are 6 stones difference between the lower end of BMI ( about 7 7lbs) and your 13+ stone.

The highest weight according to the BMI scale for someone 5 3" is around 9st and a bit.

Being anorexic - at 8st. That's a medical condition, an eating disorder. Were you medically diagnosed and why did you only eat 800 cals a day ?

I am your height and BMI of 18.5 That is my normal. I put on one stone with each pregnancy and lost it after the births. I have small bones, flat bum, small boobs, slim legs.

My mum is 5 4", her healthy weight is around 8 st 4, which she's been most of her life. Bust is 32F. She's healthy and doesn't look skinny at all.

You don't look fat in your photos but it's hard to tell. Might be better to give your actual measurements as you look 'wider' than me, but you still have a flat tummy. My hips are just 35", chest measures 30" under the bust. So people can be the same height but narrower!

Beautiful3 · 26/03/2023 08:15

No I don't think so. I'm the same height and weight. I'm definitely over weight by 4 stone.

Agree with this. The healthy range is very generous and reflects a range of builds and body types.

When we get to a point of "I wouldn't look good at X weight/Y BMI that's in the healthy range, therefore the principle of BMI is wrong/the healthy range is wrong" we have a problem.

She looks nice AND she looks her size. What’s wrong with that? The picture in the black dress has been chosen because she looks slimmer in it but you can still see that op is curvy - nicely so in my opinion.

It’s quite a weird thread if you think about it. What is op really asking us? For permission to stay at their current weight? That’s not up to us.
