The stunning skirting boards

BourbonBon · 04/03/2023 13:51

Shopping for skirting boards this morning and the bloke in the shop showed us this beading that you put on top of the floor and up to the skirting boards.

He said “have you thought about using these? They look stunning when done against skirting boards”

Stunning. As anyone ever been stunned by someone else’s skirting boards?

YABU - yes, I have on occasion gone into someone’s house and almost fainted at their amazing skirting boards

YANBU - no, it was a stupid thing to say and you’re right to still be annoyed about it hours later

I think you're taking the word too literally.

I don't think he expects anyone to leap backwards in stunned excitement on sight of one.

He's just saying that they look really good. With a bit of hyperbole because he's a salesman.

Igniteyourbones · 04/03/2023 14:00

Haha we have quite unusual skirting boards in our house and a friend visiting our house took photos of them to show their friends in the building trade!

We need to see pictures now!

katepilar · 04/03/2023 14:57

But you didnt walk into someones house, you walked into a shop that was selling the skirting boards.
ps. I havent got a clue was beading you are talking about - a picture would be useful.

DahliaMacNamara · 04/03/2023 14:58

I had to look it up. I had no idea that bit had a name all of its own.

If pixies broke in overnight and changed all my skirting boards, I probably wouldn't notice. Maybe mine are stunning, amazing and unbelievable too.

MeinKraft · 04/03/2023 14:59

Silverbook · 04/03/2023 14:56

Am I the only person who is now searching google images for skirting boards?

No! I had to google beading. It turns out there is beading on my skirting boards. It can't be very stunning because I've lived here two years and never noticed it before.

PaulaPaola · 04/03/2023 14:59

Not a fan of that beading. Skirting boards look better when laid over the floor, no need for beading.

NancyJoan · 04/03/2023 15:00

Rather hyberbolic to be fuming, hours later, about the vocabulary choices of a floor salesman. At most, you are slightly irritated, I should think.

BellePeppa · 04/03/2023 15:00

I’m stunned by how much this has annoyed you.

Maireas · 04/03/2023 15:00

Me too, @MeinKraft and I never knew. It's not tape, just a smooth wooden sort of join. Never paid attention before.

EmmaEmerald · 04/03/2023 15:05

I hear you OP, it's hyperbole

I'm curious - but my guess is the skirting boards look like...skirting boards?

NotStayingIn · 04/03/2023 15:07

I was imagining a row of little beads which sounded pretty garish, had to google it to work it out. I've now noticed I have that in some rooms and not in others. Much prefer without! (So really good to know you don't need it if you lay the floor first, I need to redo the floor so looks like I can get rid of the beading, stunning or otherwise.)

Featherhands · 04/03/2023 15:14

I helped to make ours. They're hand made in our workshop. I searched for hours to find the right router bit to make the shape i wanted. i bought it at axminster tools. it cost a bloody fortune. we made a jig for the router. it took hours. every time we make more skirting i have to run so that i don't allow it to stop and make a mark in the skirting length that will take time to remove.

Perhaps we've disappeared up our own arses on skirting but it will look bloody STUNNING when it's finished.

so YABU

Ted27 · 04/03/2023 15:14

I hate the skirting boards in my hall, stairs and landing. They were put in as cheap repairs following bomb damage in the war.
They are very visible and look awful.
They will be going in the next year or so when I have the hall, stairs and landing replastered.
I fully intend to have deep, stunning skirting boards

Runningonjammiedodgers · 04/03/2023 15:17

I once overheard someone at the hair dressers describing the can of coke the hairdresser gave her as 'stunning'. Right. Ok.

WeAllHaveWings · 04/03/2023 15:18

Beading never looks stunning, it always looks like a cheap alternative to a job done right (skirting removed before floor laid)

But skirting can look stunning, my brother is in an older house and has detailed feature skirting boards in his large hallway that are several inches high, boldly painted and the main stand out feature of the hallway.

Speakeasy22 · 04/03/2023 15:19

BourbonBon · 04/03/2023 14:02

Wouldn’t you have to be literally walking into the wall to stub your toe on a skirting board?

Bashing into the skirting would definitely be stubbing rather than stunning. Maybe he ‘misused’ the word. And that’s another annoying word…YADNBU.

Everyonehasavoice · 04/03/2023 15:20

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Yep
Me
Obsessed with joinery
Wouldnt do add on bits on the top of skirtings though, bit fake
I do walk around properties and click what the skirtings and architraves are like.
If I don’t like them it affects how I feel about it, ie whether I will buy.
Doing up properties I can’t stand mean ( not wide) joinery.

But I am an architect, it’s a sort of excuse
🤪

Hadalifeonce · 04/03/2023 15:21

I asked the guys laying our wooden floor to take off the skirting boards before they put it down, they insisted it didn't need to be done. They put down that bloody horrible beading, which makes me angry every time I look at it. They were just being lazy, I wish I'd never agreed to it.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 04/03/2023 15:21

Swiftswatch · 04/03/2023 14:27

no, it was a stupid thing to say and you’re right to still be annoyed about it hours later

Why would it be stupid or be annoying hours later though?
Of course some skirting is more attractive than others.
Some people chose cheap rubbish with a low night and a basic profile and their house looks cheap and basic as a result.
Others have proper high skirting fitted with nicely designed chamfered ends and block plinths which yes is much more ‘stunning’.

Just because you don’t have an eye for details doesn’t mean other’s don’t or that it’s stupid.

This is hilarious, and so snobby. I bet very few people actually choose their skirting board; it’s just in the house when you move in.

My house doesn’t look “cheap and basic” because of the shite skirting board, it looks cheap and basic because we are 😂. It would also look bloody stupid with wanky chamfered skirting boards, as it’s a 20 year old shoddily built terraced box, not a stately home.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/03/2023 15:23

I've always thought of policemen's truncheons (not a euphemism!) as being quite stunning.

emmyren4 · 04/03/2023 15:24

usernamenotaccepted · 04/03/2023 14:46

@usernamenotaccepted

Is that basically duct tape? I have to admit, I am stunned.

Igniteyourbones · 04/03/2023 15:25

ApiratesaysYarrr · 04/03/2023 14:57

We need to see pictures now!

They are 48cm tall and curved in the corners.

The stunning skirting boards

Crispymandm · 04/03/2023 13:58

I often find skirting boards stunning.

Bloody hell, you need to get out more

Rainbowshit · 04/03/2023 15:28

@Igniteyourbones those are stunning skirting boards. 😂

I'd have to change the socket though.

bluesky45 · 04/03/2023 15:28

That's literally not what that beading is for. You use that beading if you put the skirting on first and then do the flooring after. Because the flooring needs expansion gaps which you would normally have against the wall and then the skirting covers the gap. But if you put the skirting down first, then you have to have an expansion gap against the skirting board which you then cover with the beading. It looks so much better without the beading and means the joiner or floor fitter has done a proper job.
