The stunning skirting boards

Shopping for skirting boards this morning and the bloke in the shop showed us this beading that you put on top of the floor and up to the skirting boards.

He said “have you thought about using these? They look stunning when done against skirting boards”

Stunning. As anyone ever been stunned by someone else’s skirting boards?

YABU - yes, I have on occasion gone into someone’s house and almost fainted at their amazing skirting boards

YANBU - no, it was a stupid thing to say and you’re right to still be annoyed about it hours later

@BourbonBon well skirting boards are stunning if you stub your toes on them.

but otherwise no, and that beading looks horrible and makes the room look smaller imo.

Wouldn't it only be stunning if you bumped your head on one? Surely they would be stubbing if you stubbed a toe on one?

Dd when she first leant to crawl often bumped her head on skirting boards. Maybe I shall start describing them as stunning.

dinmin · 04/03/2023 14:04

Ugh I hate that word and its overuse so you’re justified. But the actual skirting situation is no more outrageous than most of the other situations it’s overused in!

Wouldn’t you have to be literally walking into the wall to stub your toe on a skirting board?

It happens - what can I say?!

5 black cats+darkness(light switches in really stupid places) +Stupidly narrow doors = walk into door edges and stun toes on skirting.
or 5(bc)+(d-l)= st

CrotchetyCrocheting · 04/03/2023 14:06

Stunning just means extremely impressive or attractive. You don't have to be literally stunned. I don't think it is that out of the ordinary to find certain skirting boards or what ever to be extremely attractive.

Sunriseinwonderland · 04/03/2023 14:06

I would be stunned by wonderful skirting boards as I have spent the week viewing dumps that clearly feral animals live in in my price range.
So sick of homes that have just degenerated and never been done up to a good standard.

Yayyayitsaholiholiday · 04/03/2023 14:07

I get you.
Even for your own home, buying stuff like flooring etc is pretty dull.

Just get in there, choose a colour and floor type and find the price………

A skirting board could never, ever be stunning……
maybe clean, or dusty, or well fitted, or too large……… but never, ever stunning…….

I could never work somewhere I had to pretend to be interested about someone’s choice of paint/flooring/lighting system/skirting boards………. I’d have to kill myself!!! 😂

Huh? YABU nothing wrong with the word stunning in this context.

So you would literally use the word stunning to describe someone’s nicely done skirting boards?

If I thought they were stunning why not?

You looking at a nice skirting board

Our skirting boards are quite high (1930s) so it just sort of blends in, it wouldn't look right on smaller modern skirting boards though, only the hall ones have it, I think it's been there for years, definitely wouldn't call it stunning though

I'm just going to say: Bet that's a pain to dust.

That's my first reaction too... just another ledge to catch dust and webs.

You making a pointless comment

Fromage · 04/03/2023 14:11

I'm with you OP. I don't give a shit about skirting boards, to be fair, so it's highly unlikely I'm going to be stunned at their beauty and elegance.

BUT what does stun me is hyperbolic bullshit to describe/sell something fairly ordinary. My current pet peeve is words like "exciting!" and "amazing opportunity!" and "wonderful!" in fucking job adverts. And we're not talking about international travel and film stars, we're talking mundane 9-5s. Rant over.

So yes, I would be annoyed by someone so unable to contain their passion for/desperate need to flog you skirting board beading, that the word "stunning" gushed from their mouth.

Get. A. Grip.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/03/2023 14:15

I dunno what beading is but I like a nice skirting board, also cornicing 🙂

picklemewalnuts · 04/03/2023 14:18

Is he welsh? DS has moved to Wales and is amazed by how many things there are 'stunning'. Or 'lush'.

Iwannabeacrocodilehunter · 04/03/2023 14:19

BourbonBon · 04/03/2023 13:58

I just can’t imagine walking into someone’s house and jumping back in a stunned manner because you happen upon their skirting boards - it makes no sense

A really really posh pair of designer curtains maybe but skirting boards?

Hmm, no, I guess not…although, coving perhaps.

samqueens · 04/03/2023 14:21

I just want to know what they looked like…?!?!

QueefQueen80s · 04/03/2023 14:23

Why are there no pictures with this?

ancientgran · 04/03/2023 14:24

I don't think I've ever thought skirting boards were stunning, I do often notice if they are a bit knocked about, dirty, badly painted. I suppose I just think skirting boards should all be stunning by default.

Mamette · 04/03/2023 14:26

What would you need beading with new skirting boards though? Surely beading is for when you don’t want to have to remove the existing skirtings and you need to cover up a gap?

Swiftswatch · 04/03/2023 14:27

no, it was a stupid thing to say and you’re right to still be annoyed about it hours later

Why would it be stupid or be annoying hours later though?
Of course some skirting is more attractive than others.
Some people chose cheap rubbish with a low night and a basic profile and their house looks cheap and basic as a result.
Others have proper high skirting fitted with nicely designed chamfered ends and block plinths which yes is much more ‘stunning’.

Just because you don’t have an eye for details doesn’t mean other’s don’t or that it’s stupid.

Xol · 04/03/2023 14:28

I would have said YANBU, but I don't understand why you were annoyed at the time, let alone hours later. I would view it as rather silly salesmanship, would probably find it quite funny at the time, and would then forget about it.

UdoU · 04/03/2023 14:28

BourbonBon · 04/03/2023 13:56

So you would literally use the word stunning to describe someone’s nicely done skirting boards?

The use of the word stunning in this context is not as annoying as the overuse of the word ‘literally’. ‘Really’ would have done.

Yants · 04/03/2023 14:28

I think use of such hyperbolic descriptive language is just due mainly to Facebook and Instatwat, where the unimaginative and needy dullards and simpletons who live their vacuous empty lives on them feel the need to describe even the most mundane things as "'OMG! Amazing! Stunning!" etc etc

User18695438 · 04/03/2023 14:29

This is it I think, it doesn't look very stunning though😬
