The stunning skirting boards

Shopping for skirting boards this morning and the bloke in the shop showed us this beading that you put on top of the floor and up to the skirting boards.

He said “have you thought about using these? They look stunning when done against skirting boards”

Stunning. As anyone ever been stunned by someone else’s skirting boards?

YABU - yes, I have on occasion gone into someone’s house and almost fainted at their amazing skirting boards

YANBU - no, it was a stupid thing to say and you’re right to still be annoyed about it hours later

I am stunned by my own skirting boards – largely their filth at the moment but when the house is done they’ll be chef’s kiss: they’re so big! And as we remove the previous owner’s multiple layers of carpet they only get bigger! I would not be stunned by beading, though, it’s horrible, a last resort.

ActDottie · 04/03/2023 15:31

We had more “fancy” skirting boards in our last house and they were a nightmare for dust… so my first thought was DUST!

PuddlesPityParty · 04/03/2023 15:36

One of the definitions of stunning is beautiful - why can’t it look beautiful? Any decor can.

singer15 · 04/03/2023 15:36

If you listen to strangers on the Internet, it opens up a whole new (ever-expanding) world of things designed to make you feel inferior! I have the much-maligned beading, because that's just what came with this house. It's always seemed perfectly normal and fine to me and is certainly not something I think about regularly. The only time I do think about skirting boards is when we're changing the flooring or I notice that it needs to be cleaned.

Oh well. I'll just sit and remind myself of the good things about my home. The utility room and dedicated hobby room will lift my spirits and soon help me forget my tacky, shoddy, cheap, basic skirting board beading... 😂

banivani · 04/03/2023 15:37

Yanbu OP and the word stunning is terribly annoying, I’m with you all the way!

Throwncrumbs · 04/03/2023 15:38

I’ve got that around my skirting boards, they don’t look stunning , they look like skirting boards😂

Showdogworkingdog · 04/03/2023 15:38

I’m an old house nerd. I notice features like skirting boards, architrave, fire surrounds…any funny little architectural features and wonder about their function and appearance through the years. I’d have probably lingered a while to talk more.
I’m such fun at parties.

GertrudeBell · 04/03/2023 15:39

The beading is actually designed to cover up the expansion gap between the flooring and the skirting board where the floor has been fitted after the skirting board.

The better way to do it is to fit the floor first, put the skirting board on top, and then there’s no need for any beading.

It’s not stunning, it’s actually a “fix” for sub-optimal fitting.

(But I do like a good skirting board properly fitted…).

TiaraBoo · 04/03/2023 15:39

I do look at skirting boards in an admiring way rather than stunned.
But I voted YABU for you being annoyed hours after the event rather than being pleasantly surprised at his enthusiasm for beading (?)

User18695438 · 04/03/2023 15:45

Ours is only in the hall, I hadn't really ever took any notice of it before, we just have the original wooden floor which was there when we moved in years ago, the floor is the original oak floorboards and I think the skirting is the original as well, I have no idea when the wooden beading was added or why

I just can’t imagine walking into someone’s house and jumping back in a stunned manner because you happen upon their skirting boards - it makes no sense

A really really posh pair of designer curtains maybe but skirting boards?

But by that logic one shouldn't use the word stunning to describe someone's outfit, the view from a mountain, anything really, unless it makes you 'jump back in a stunned manner'.

I've said something is stunning many times without physically jumping back as I'm sure the majority of people on this thread and beyond have.

Skirting boards being stunning may be a bit of a stretch but I have admired nice ones in the past, and at the end of the day, he's trying to sell you something so of course he is likely to be a bit OTT!

Floralnomad · 04/03/2023 15:50

YABU but not because of beading but because skirting / coving etc finishes off a room and if it looks crap the whole room is affected .

Tabitha1960 · 04/03/2023 15:51

I sympathise. Looking to move houses in my seaside town, literally every home that has even so much as as glimpse of the sea is described as having a "stunning" view. There's nothing "stunning" about seeing the sea when you see it every day. And if, like me, your view of the sea is three-quarters blocked by other houses or roofs, what's remotely "stunning" about that?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 04/03/2023 15:53

BourbonBon · 04/03/2023 13:59

Seriously? 😂 I think I’m living in a parallel universe sometimes!

Ill admit I’m BU then but I’m still a bit fuming about it

Well "stunning" is no more inappropriate than you being "fuming" about it. I think you just lost your own argument 😂

ThisNameIsNotAvailable · 04/03/2023 15:54

I’m really jealous of my son’s skirting board, I suspect they’ve used some sort of beading

frowningfrog · 04/03/2023 15:57

Damn, you beat me to it - I was about to say exactly the same thing.

skyfalldown · 04/03/2023 16:01

It’s not that deep

That says more about your lack of imagination, I imagine.

OoooohMatron · 04/03/2023 16:06

If its that insignificant to you, why on earth are you 'going shopping' for them? Surely a quick online Wickes shop would do. Or do you secretly want to wow visitors with your stunning skirting boards!

sjxoxo · 04/03/2023 16:07

I love all things interiors so yes YABU 😃 I find authentic mouldings and decorative historical interiors stunning.. in interiors it’s all about the attention to detail and this sounds like what he is trying to say.. it’s a curated finishing touch that would be unexpected to the viewer and maybe even to someone experienced like an interior designer or architect it would be a combination they’ve not seen much before. I think you’re taking the definition a bit too literally! x

Changechangechanging · 04/03/2023 16:07

You're being a bit pedantic, OP. It's sale's patter. Nothing more, nothing less.

IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme · 04/03/2023 16:15

I saw some stunning skirting boards once they were thicker than normal with a blunt edge.
I tried to explain this to the builder fixing up our house & he nodded along as if he knew what I was on about. Then off he skipped to the suppliers whilst i went to work-I came home to regular, boring skirting boards. I'm still bitter.

RichardsGear · 04/03/2023 16:16

Who can be arsed removing skirting boards though? We tried in one room and a load of plaster came away too. Would rather have beading than that hassle.

Briallen · 04/03/2023 16:17

Op you’ve made me laugh. I have a vision of someone seeing some skirting and then leaping back in amazement at how stunning it is 😂

I have never leaped back due to skirting boards sadly

motherofgodhaudyerwheesht · 04/03/2023 16:19

I am with you OP although YABU to be happier with the use of stunning for other stuff. Every social media pic of someone in a dress, every room interior, every attempt at art. Especially when they are most obviously not ..... stunning and often quite the opposite. It drives me demented and fuming (loses own argument).
