Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

I think you really need to lighten up!! Good on him for making an effort, I'm sure the kids loved it

Our school was bedtime story theme. Kids went in pjs not sure about teachers and while I find it a lazy cop-out there are also people that can't afford fancy costumes so I kinda get it. And yes teachers should be joining in

Lazy cop out?

Not everyone has lots of spare time,

Get a life. And quick.

Did you actually read the OP's comments?

As an autistic person you should know why ableist slurs are not ok.

My DD is "autistic" and "thick". You think you've got problems, @AutisticLegoLover

Misslings · 02/03/2023 18:30

@Puppers

Yeah. She needs to get a life. Sharpish, what’s your point?

Misslings · 02/03/2023 18:33

@Puppers

Are we supposed to pander to someone being “triggered” because some bloke had his PJs on at work for world book day? Must have missed that brief….. Yeah, she needs to get a life.

RemoteControlDoobry · 02/03/2023 18:34

Sorry OP but you’re making your fellow autistics look like fools. You can’t blame your revulsion at the HT in pyjamas on autism!

And this is why autism conditions need different labels.

Misslings · 02/03/2023 18:34

@RemoteControlDoobry

100 percent agree.

SmallbutMighty1 · 02/03/2023 18:34

Jesus christ. Our theme (as a teacher) was PJs too. It makes it easier for the parents to do it. You expect the teachers and head not to bother?!

Songbird54321 · 02/03/2023 18:35

My daughter’s headteacher was dressed as a giant crayon. I thought it was fantastic as did the kids.
Yes, YABU, although I think miserable is a more appropriate word

Lemonademoney · 02/03/2023 18:35

I think it’s lovely when school staff join in! Primary should be fun

MrsW1986 · 02/03/2023 18:35

Exactly. our school did “cosy day”‘instead of WBD costumes so children & staff could wear pjs, onesies or jogging suits, whatever they felt comfy in & still share their favourite books. I think it’s a great idea and saved some parents spending money they may not have.

It’s not a lazy cop out if you’re making sure the day is easy for parents to manage and accessible for all children

SweetPetrichor · 02/03/2023 18:43

Surely if him being in something other than his regular suit is triggering then he was going to fail no matter what he did to join in cause anything would be variance from the norm?

Its all in good fun. My mum wore pjs to one of these back before she retired. She also went to another dressed as a goth, wearing my platform new rock boots. The kids found it all hilarious. For the rest of the year she was the stern dragon of a teacher, but everyone needs to have a laugh occasionally.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 02/03/2023 18:44

World book day is shit.

wildchild554 · 02/03/2023 18:52

I think it's great the teachers making an effort to get involved.

Sparkleshine21 · 02/03/2023 18:52

@AutisticLegoLover one of the many reasons I removed my daughter from mainstream school, she couldn’t cope with the amount of fancy dress days, she hated anyone even having different hair than usual, or wearing spots on their uniform for children in need! I understand you completely.

Littlefaeries · 02/03/2023 18:52

I once had to work with a phlebotomist who turned up on children in need day in Pudsey pyjamas.
All our clients were adults.
She looked so unprofessional, it wasn’t fun it was totally embarrassing.
A hat or badge would have been fine.
Tbf though I don’t wear pyjamas unless it’s freezing or I’m staying away from home and I always get dressed for the day.

Bagzzz · 02/03/2023 18:52

Sorry about the pile on OP. Lots of people seem invested in WBD but not reading the full thread/your updates.

What colour though?

ensayers · 02/03/2023 18:53

You probably disapprove of the kids Christmas concert too

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 02/03/2023 18:55

YABU

Amy3500 · 02/03/2023 18:55

I absolutely hated Pjs in school when I was a teacher, it’s so awkward dealing with serious situations or talking to parents in some PJs. I would absolutely hate it if it was suggested! 😂

Although did fully join in all dressing up for world book day, just didn’t like the PJ ones!

YABU. Seeing teachers in daft clothes is half the fun of WBD.

Yes, exactly this.
