Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

I think it is nice teachers made the effort and likely fun for the children.

Arrocahar23 · 03/03/2023 17:35

They must be pretending to be in Motherland…

MeganTheeScallion · 03/03/2023 17:41

I'm autistic and I definitely empathise with you but, I'm sorry, YABU in this instance.

MeganTheeScallion · 03/03/2023 17:50

Sorry, I didn't realise there were so many posts already and this was from yesterday. Phone glitch.

Clothes being worn more than once are not unhygienic!

If you say so…
Do you put worn clothes back away with laundered clothes then? 🤮

toomuchlaundry · 03/03/2023 18:19

Do you have a life @KatysMumJen or do you spend all your time doing the laundry? Even with my username I don't wash everything after wearing it once!

My god it's a wonder we're still alive.

I have other priorities in my life. Washing clean washing is funnily enough not one of the.

At our school it’s just another opportunity for all the competitive mummies to try to out do each other and get their kids photo in the local paper - the school select all the best ones to be photographed and featured. 🙄

Cue parents trying to bullshit everyone that little Julian’s favourite book is “great expectations” (he’s 6 FFS!) and sending kids in all sorts of elaborate creations.

Many parent don’t have either the time or the money to sort out all these costumes and it just adds to the pressure.

I’d love for them to just say everyone come in PJs - so much more inclusive.

Quotation now attached!!

They must be pretending they’re in Motherland…

Elaina87 · 03/03/2023 18:51

I'd have been surprised and get what you mean about it being over familiar, it's almost like an insight into their home life! But i think I would see the funny, light hearted side of it. They are human.

Jack80 · 03/03/2023 20:42

It was maybe a theme for world book day. It’s meant to be fun, just laugh it off.

HappyAsASandboy · 03/03/2023 21:49

I think it's a good thing really - helps the kids see that their teachers are real people who can take part in these things too. Our headteacher also dresses up for these days (though I've not seen him in pjs as our school dress up as characters not pjs), and he wears his shorts for a Year 2 trip to the seaside too!

I absolutely see what you mean about it feeling cringy to us as parents. I think this is because our teachers would never have done this when we were at school. So it feels very non-teacher-ish to do something so informal. I don't think that makes it wrong though, just different.

Griefgood · 04/03/2023 05:50

@KatysMumJen you cannot be serious ! GrinGrin

AgentJohnson · 04/03/2023 06:09

Op it is perfectly ok not to be ok with this but given the context, most people won’t view the HT any less and probably rate him more for joining in. I don’t live in the UK and WBD isn’t a thing here but we do have a national breakfast day and primary school children go to school in their PJ’s. Most people joined in, teachers, staff and parents. I remember the looks I got from people on my way to work when I had no time to change. I work in a theatre so when I explained my attire, no one batted an eyelid.

(Although I would question why pjs on world book day … what character is that supposed to be?! I have autism and that would annoy me more)!

Because people read in PJs. It's a way of avoiding the stress of coming up with a costume.

You sound very difficult.

Kids work far better with teachers they can relate with and your principal and teachers just showed they are a real part of the school team as opposed to Teachers V's Students.

You should be glad to have such lovely teachers.

But wouldn't that be personality rather than clothes.

chaosmaker · 04/03/2023 10:18

But HOW does world book day make parents read with their children or take them to the library (the ones that still exist)?

KatysMumJen · 04/03/2023 10:30

toomuchlaundry · 03/03/2023 18:19

Lmao, of course I do. It’s done and dusted before I leave for work. If it doesn’t build up, it’s not a big job.
I HAVE a life because I do it this way.

Needmorelego · 04/03/2023 10:43

@chaosmaker all children should get the voucher that can be exchanged for the especially published WBD books so in theory that's encouraging reading. Unfortunately despite the books being available in supermarkets (where most parents do go to) many get unclaimed.

That's what I mean though. The ideaprobably is well meaning but what is the actual point of it? Does dressing up make you want to read a book? Enthusiasm to read is about the escapism it can offer, then it can be about learning. Hand in hand with drama classes would probably be much better long term.

Needmorelego · 04/03/2023 11:33

@chaosmaker yeah....it isn't always about books and reading really.
It depends on the school and what they do. Shame really.

ellyeth · 04/03/2023 18:22

I think it's preferable to putting parents under pressure regarding costumes. The whole thing was getting out of hand.

KatyKlanger · 04/03/2023 18:28

Could have been worse. Aren't some teachers wearing comedy "breasts" and nappies these days and doing dance routines?

Grapewrath · 04/03/2023 18:33

I hope you realise that this is 100% your problem. It’s a total non issue

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 06/03/2023 06:02

Well said @Grapewrath
