Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

What colour though?

Cobalt blue. Absolutely stunning

TeacherHatOn · 02/03/2023 18:57

Teacher here who wore pyjamas to school today as part of WBD. Didn't feel particularly comfortable but we do it for the kids - I teach in a school in an area of very high social deprivation and we chose a pyjama theme so that no one had to miss out.

Cocobutt · 02/03/2023 18:58

FFS I’m autistic, my DD is autistic and I work with SEND children.

We all dress up for world book day (not today because of the strike) and we usually do PJs as they’re cheaper and easier to get hold of.

It is one of the best days of the year for the ASD students.

You can be offended for whatever reason (even though I think you’re being ridiculous) but blaming ASD is a low blow.

It’s always weird to see teachers or students out of uniform but you are taking it too far.

Ilovechocolate87 · 02/03/2023 18:59

YANBU imo.....I find it weird people wearing pyjamas outside their homes whatever the reason! They aren't clothes and don't fit like clothes....tend to cling in all the wrong areas.I would feel embarrassed and unprofessional.

Strawberrydelight78 · 02/03/2023 18:59

The pyjamas is to share favourite bedtime stories. Plus there's a cost of living crisis ATM so not everyone can afford a costume and not everyone is creative enough to make they're own.But there are some very nice children's character pyjamas and onesies that are more comfortable than a costume. My own daughter with autism hated dressing up clothes. She hated the feel of it on her skin and it looked too different until she was .

And??? Some people go on about ‘world book day’ like it’s some once in a life time mega event that the world has to stop turning for. Put a silly hat on and get on with it. No one wants to see you strolling around in your night wear ffs.

Totally agree

I’m so glad mine are in high school and all this shit is at an end for us now.

Lots of schools now opt for pj’s as many families can’t afford to buy a costume every year.

They could just opt for school uniform or own clothes.

PaigeMatthews · 02/03/2023 19:02

If people are actually struggling to think of books with people wearing pyjamas in them, they need to read more.

Dagnabit · 02/03/2023 19:03

YABU - I’d rather have a HT with a fun side teaching my primary age child. You can’t control everything, just because of your condition.

Starlightstarbright1 · 02/03/2023 19:05

My D’s has Asd and spd so finds school uniform uncomfortable.. Everyone’s difficulties are different. You can feel whatever you feel however it isn’t unreasonable for ht to dress up for Wbd…

What you have to do is manage your feelings. It’s a bit like my D’s doesn’t like loud noises but the world isn’t going to be quiet for him so he has to find ways to manage that.

blubirdi · 02/03/2023 19:08

when my son was at high school the kids couldn’t dress up but the teachers did, now that was what I found strange!

angela99999 · 02/03/2023 19:08

At my GC's schools it might as well be called "World Harry Potter Day" as a vast number of the children wear Harry Potter themed costumes. I suppose it makes sense, if they already have the costumes. Quite a few little Spidermen about too, but also a few very bemused parents from overseas who just didn't get what was going on.

SpicedPumpkinLatte · 02/03/2023 19:09

I'm with you OP. The whole thing is massively cringey

I don't understand what's "fun" about it.

NoKandoo · 02/03/2023 19:09

Flyinggeesei234 · 02/03/2023 12:21

I think if you don’t understand this you never will.

Oh God, I understand this a million times over.

I would also feel the same as @AutisticLegoLover about the Head in pyjamas. Though I have a complete and irrational aversion to pyjamas full stop. I would spontaneously combust if I saw someone wearing them during the day. Seeing someone in nightwear (including dressing gowns) during daytime hours makes me feel very, very uncomfortable. Nightwear is for bed and is to be discarded post-matinal shower. Nobody should ever be allowed to eat breakfast unless they are fully dressed, IMO.

If I were a teacher and were asked to wear pyjamas for work, I'd have to say no. I'd rather dress up, because it is at least clear that I am 'dressed up'. Though I'd hate that too.

One of my DC has what used to be called Asperger Syndrome, and always went to school in his uniform on non-uniform days. In his head, school was synonymous with uniform. I can see why.

FeetupTvon · 02/03/2023 19:10

Sounds as though your children are lucky to have such a great headteacher.

Northernlassie1974 · 02/03/2023 19:11

Luckyduc · 02/03/2023 18:14

@Northernlassie1974 Don't you realise that all primary teachers need to be clocked in at 8am and don't leave until at least 4pm. Even once you've picked your child up, we have to set thing up for the morning and usually their is a school meeting each day.
As for the headmaster, he is usually the first in the building and last to leave. Our headmaster is in 7.30am until 6pm and has a 2 hour drive each day.

Sorry, I thought it was obvious I was being sarcastic as I stated I am also a teacher!!! In the spirit of the WhatsApp messages between our wonderful education secretary and Matt ‘i am a ’

For the record, my day is 7.45-6 and then continues when I get home and weekends. Lazy workshy money grabber that I am…..

Dominoeffecter · 02/03/2023 19:11

Fgs

ManyBooksLittleTime · 02/03/2023 19:13

Some of you would hate my school if you don't like teachers dressing up. 45 of us did and it's secondary school! Totally optional for staff and pupils. About half did.

Conkersinautumn · 02/03/2023 19:14

I'm autistic. I think it's really helpful when the teachers join in, they are modelling the day. Also a 'professional' teacher shouldn't always dress for an office environment, their clothes need to work for what can be very physical work. School is thankfully not a corporate place. Just for a different take for you. But then I never experience revulsion based on how someone looks. We are weird animals who like to adorn ourselves.

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 02/03/2023 19:14

Pjs are just clothes and it’s a fancy dress day fgs.

Rapunzel88 · 02/03/2023 19:17

This was pre world book day, but I remember seeing my rather stuffy headmaster appear on our primary school stage dressed in a flowery dress and comedy balloons as breasts for a Christmas comedy skit. Don’t think I have ever laughed harder since that day. Kids love seeing adults in silly fancy dress.

Mulhollandmagoo · 02/03/2023 19:22

@AutisticLegoLover my daughter did PJ's for world book day, and my mind went straight to 'bed time story' not sure if this is right or not but that is my understanding.

grumpycow1 · 02/03/2023 19:22

YABU

Griefgood · 02/03/2023 19:22

@Songbird54321 cobalt blue is good! I think I'd go for sunshine yellow myself Grin

LoveQuinnOhDearyMe · 02/03/2023 19:22

We did pyjamas today! We do Book Day Character dressing up every other year and have Pyjama day on the other (likewise rotating the need for costumes on Children in Need / Comic Relief / other fundraising days). Just reduces the days parents need to get creative or spend money and ease the pressure.

I greeted my children and parents today in a onesie and my slipper boots. I was perfectly decent underneath (leggings and a top) and I imagine the Head in this scenario was too. It’s just a bit of fun!
