Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

The pyjamas ARE the fancy dress Confused

neighboursmustliveon · 02/03/2023 09:20

Yabu, kids love it and it's great for teachers to get involved.

Many schools give option of dressing as a character from a book or dressing in pjs. The pj idea comes from bed time reading which for primary school children is the most common time to read with their parents.

DramaLlama20 · 02/03/2023 09:21

This is definitely a You issue.
Something you should really work hard on so as not to pass on your anxieties to your kids. I partly understand as I'm currently going through assessment for ASD and ADHD but I work hard to mask where possible. This is definitely a masking situation.

(Although I would question why pjs on world book day … what character is that supposed to be?! I have autism and that would annoy me more)!

Brings to life the idea of a bedtime story and means no one has to spend money on a costume. Far more inclusive.

soggydigestives · 02/03/2023 09:23

It's world book Day FFS it's for the kids to enjoy and it hopefully encourages them to read. Think you need to lighten up!🙄

Griefgood · 02/03/2023 09:23

As you've alluded to in your OP, this is your issue and the HT had done nothing wrong.

noblegiraffe · 02/03/2023 09:14

Because costumes are expensive and kids already own nightwear. It's less exclusionary.

That makes sense. Thanks.

Nimbostratus100 · 02/03/2023 09:23

right, so when I make an effort to get into the fun of world book day ( hate it) dress up and act my character to screams of laughter from my classes, I need to keep in mind that the parents are going to be offended- the other ones, the ones that are not being offended that I haven't dressed up enough, spent enough time and money or got into character enough - because there will be those too - what ever I do

evemillbank · 02/03/2023 09:23

Lolllllllll you say it like he has just got up and come to work in his pjs. I'm sure he has pants on . Ffs. For today it is a costume

Trinity65 · 02/03/2023 09:24

Yes YABU
HTH

AutisticLegoLover · 02/03/2023 09:24

@DramaLlama20 masking impacts negatively on mental health and functioning for many with ASD and it certainly does for me. I don't need to cover up my disability thank you, not that anyone witnessed my discomfort, I just posted about it here.

That's ok, IABU.

Try to relax - it's World Book Day - it's about that, not about you and your insecurities. I hope you're a bit more chilled when parenting your children.

WandaWonder · 02/03/2023 09:25

Omg teachers are normal, who'd have thought

No I have no problems with them wearing this

shard5 · 02/03/2023 09:25

It's to encourage bedtime reading. At my dds primary in the last hour they dim the lights and everyone enjoys storytime a lot more than normal days.
Maybe the headteacher was trying to encourage other staff members who were hesitant to wear their PJs.
The children do enjoy these days more when their teachers join in especially as they'll probably have a presentation or assembly around reading so everyone will see each other's costumes.

RudsyFarmer · 02/03/2023 09:25

We’ve just experienced similar and I LOVE it. The kids laughing their heads off. Brilliant 👌

shard5 · 02/03/2023 09:26

My daughter had to dress as a word today, I found it more difficult than just sending her in in clean PJs.

Genevieva · 02/03/2023 09:27

I always wish World Book Day was later in the year when the weather is warmer. There are always kids and teachers in flimsy clothes that is unsuitable for winter weather. I don't really care what they wear as long as they can all play outside.

RachelSq · 02/03/2023 09:28

I understand it might be unsettling to you, but as long as the pyjamas were appropriate (so covering all the bits they should be and not too see through) it’s great that the headteacher is joining in.

A PJ day is a fancy dress day in my eyes too. Agree it’s a great idea instead of loads of fancy dress costumes that will be worn once.

YABU in wanting him to stay suited and booted for one day (but others in the thread are being quite mean to you in the way they’re putting their view across).

EmilyGilmoresSass · 02/03/2023 09:29

RobinRobinMouse · 02/03/2023 09:16

I think it's better if the adults at school join.

I agree. Seems more inclusive and its nice to see teachers joining in the fun and feeling less need to be 'professional' for a change.

furryfrontbottom · 02/03/2023 09:29

Well, I assume he had underwear on beneath his pyjamas.

Needmorelego · 02/03/2023 09:30

It's a fun day. I've seen teachers do this and they usually go in the most over the top onesie they can find or an old fashioned Victorian nightgown with matching nightcap. Several might bring along an old teddy bear - which children love to hear about how - what the bears name is and how teacher has had the besr since they were a little child.
It mostly causes giggles among the children or a few jokes about "oh no.... I forgot to get dressed".

holierthanthou73 · 02/03/2023 09:30

What a misery guts

DrPepperDiet · 02/03/2023 09:30

Please get a grip. My two children have world book day & they’ve all worn PJs. It’s all part of the fun.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 02/03/2023 09:31

SpyouttheLand · 02/03/2023 09:18

It's a reference to bedtime stories and saves staff and parents buying costumes specially

Oh, I’d have assumed he was a massive Douglas Adams fan and been very impressed 😁

Patienceisntvirtuous · 02/03/2023 09:31

My first thought was that I hoped they were clean, and hadn't 'gone at the crotch'- a lot of PJs I see men wearing are stained and scruffy/holey! And what kind of pjamas? Won't he get a bit cold?

Other than that, I think It's absolutely fine. It's good for children to see their teachers as real people. It is a reference to cosiness and curling up with a good book being important. And as others have said, saves buying costumes if PJs are acceptable as same. YABU.
