Teachers in pjs on world book day

I'm not a fan as it is but we have just been greeted at the school door by the headteacher in his pjs and dressing gown. He usually wears a suit and looks professional. I know the children were to go in their pjs or a onesie but I did t expect staff, especially the HT, to be in nightwear. It feels over-familiar perhaps, for what if a better word. I'm not sure I'll look at him the same way again. I have a very low threshold for revulsion thanks to many, many sensory issues as part of being autistic and I don't always understand norms so I'm happy to be told I'm being unreasonable. I'd feel the same way if it was the past female HT too about the professionalism. Admittedly him being male makes a difference to my personal feelings due to trauma but from a professional point of view it doesn't sit right.

Lots of schools now opt for pj’s as many families can’t afford to buy a costume every year.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 02/03/2023 18:07

Why not call it what it is? Pj day. Wearing pjs is hardly anything to do with world book day is it?

Frazzled83 · 02/03/2023 18:09

I’ve not read all messages on the thread but some people seem to have missed that OP is neurodiverse and has a trauma history.

FWIW you’re not unreasonable to feel the way you do but it is generally socially acceptable for teachers to step out of normal roles on days like these and the kids (the neurotypical ones anyway 😂) probably loved it. I think WBD is generally a bit of a nightmare for the autistic kids.

WildRose42 · 02/03/2023 18:09

YABU - world book day is a ‘fun’ day for children and staff, to get involved and enjoy. Why are there so many ‘fun suckers’ in this world, always trying to put a downer on everything. I think
its great the HT got involved, fair play to him. I bet the children loved it, the fact he joined in. There’s enough negativity in this world right now, embrace this event and stop complaining of people actually making an effort and enjoying the event itself.

Northernlassie1974 · 02/03/2023 18:10

Sorry, what I meant to say was, it’s probably the head being like the rest of us bone idle lazy teachers and thinking, roll out of bed, into work at 9, clock off at 330 and then roll back into bed. Tidy.

Logburnerperils · 02/03/2023 18:12

It is your issue to deal with it however you can. The head did nothing wrong

onlylarkin · 02/03/2023 18:12

I cant believe that, in this day and age, this is what a person would complain about. OMG stop the press! The headmaster in PJ's. 🙄

Jbird11 · 02/03/2023 18:12

YABU Honestly, us Primary Heads can’t win! If we don’t join in we’ll be accused of being miserable, when we do we get comments like this! The pjs thing has happened this year as schools are having to be mindful of the cost of living so lots of schools have opted for a cosy bedtime reading theme. In addition to this, lots of children actually feel really anxious & self conscious about wearing something different, and seeing the HT & their teachers dressed up shows them it’s ok to be silly.

LlynTegid · 02/03/2023 18:12

I am with you OP, and I would argue you can mark and celebrate World Book Day without dressing up in any case. Fun can be had in many ways at minimal or no expense.

PoshHorseyBird · 02/03/2023 18:13

At my sons school world book day was either dress up as a book character or wear pyjamas (related to bedtime reading) this way people didn't have to spend extra money on an outfit. Most of the teachers were wearing pyjamas and dressing gowns, the kids found this great fun seeing the teachers like this. It's just a bit of fun.

Vynalbob · 02/03/2023 18:14

YABU
It is fancy dress if your character wears PJs
🙄

Alicehatter · 02/03/2023 18:14

Pj day in my school, children to bring their favourite bedtime story. The idea being kids don't have to worry about costumes and parents don't have to worry about expense. Teachers love getting involved because it's usually one of the only times we get to be a bit silly with the kids. Actually a bit upset to hear a parent would be offended. Not like HT was stood in his boxers. Bet he'd have got called for not joining in 🤷🏼‍♀️

Luckyduc · 02/03/2023 18:14

@Northernlassie1974 Don't you realise that all primary teachers need to be clocked in at 8am and don't leave until at least 4pm. Even once you've picked your child up, we have to set thing up for the morning and usually their is a school meeting each day.
As for the headmaster, he is usually the first in the building and last to leave. Our headmaster is in 7.30am until 6pm and has a 2 hour drive each day.

Oh yes, bound to be that.🙄

NecklessMumster · 02/03/2023 18:14

I think I associate pyjamas with no underwear underneath so that might give me the ick

Misslings · 02/03/2023 18:15

Get a life. And quick.

MrWhippersnapper · 02/03/2023 18:15

Northernlassie is clearly being sarcastic

Chubbymoo · 02/03/2023 18:16

You sound like a right fun-sponge. Relax!!! It’s all fine in good spirits

toomuchlaundry · 02/03/2023 18:17

It's great to see a male role model of reading at bedtime, it is very much encouraged. DH and I always took it in turns to read to DS so he was used to seeing a male read books

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 02/03/2023 18:18

Yabu. I don’t think he’s also responsible for your trauma. You perhaps need more therapy

Smiffy58 · 02/03/2023 18:19

The school I work in are having a pj day tomorrow, as voted for by the children. I perfectly understand your objections to it, I've never joined in the dressing up thing! But the idea it's that kids can snuggle up with their favourite book, and it does take the pressure off parents and staff to buy/make costumes. The kids are really looking forward to it, I'm looking forward to spending the day reading to kids! But, my concession will be a fleecy top and fluffy slippers...I don't possess jammies!

toomuchlaundry · 02/03/2023 18:20

@LlynTegid dressing up in pjs will probably not involve too much expense and encourages bedtime reading. Surely, what WBD is about. So many children just throw on any costume they may have at home without relating it to a book, or they have a costume from a film based on a book, but have never read the book or had the book read to them.

Skyelils · 02/03/2023 18:22

And???? What’s wrong with that you would be complaining if they were tyrants it’s good that teachers are more relaxed these days

Neeekko · 02/03/2023 18:23

Our school was bedtime story theme. Kids went in pjs not sure about teachers and while I find it a lazy cop-out there are also people that can't afford fancy costumes so I kinda get it. And yes teachers should be joining in
