To be pissed off at my boyfriend for this?

Have been with my boyfriend for 8 months. Very new and lovely relationship.
It is my birthday in 2 weeks time. I had a rotten birthday last year (was dumped by my ex on my birthday lol). He told me to book time off work for a couple of days.

He’s just messaged me saying “oh I’ve messed up, I booked for us to go to Vienna for a couple of days but I just realised my passport has expired” “don’t worry it’s refundable but didn’t cross my mind”

I just can’t help but feel really deflated, he didn’t seem that bothered about it. I’m obviously really grateful he booked it as I’ve wanted to go for ages. He’s since been really apologetic about it, but I don’t know whether to be annoyed at his general disorganisation. He’s since said he’d make it up to me, but didn’t say this at first.

Am I being unreasonable?

Yes

Springintoabetterlife · 22/02/2023 16:28

Suggest you go away somewhere in the UK.

AutisticLegoLover · 22/02/2023 16:29

Well, that sucks. Could you go somewhere else that doesn't require a passport?

bluejelly · 22/02/2023 16:29

Ah that's tough and disappointing, but if he is otherwise lovely I would give him the benefit of the doubt...

Testng123 · 22/02/2023 16:30

Can he not get an emergency passport? Or reschedule instead of getting a refund?

Gwen82 · 22/02/2023 16:31

He never booked it op

Gwen82 · 22/02/2023 16:31

What holiday is refundable where the holiday booker hasn’t been arsed to check their passport?

None.

MelchiorsMistress · 22/02/2023 16:32

Yanbu. He shouldn’t have said it if he didn’t mean it. Has he now applied for a passport renewal? Has he arranged an alternative trip?

I could forgive this easily, but depending on how he behaves next. If he expects you to forget about it completely then he’s a waster who is happy to string you along. If he gets his passport sorted asap and rebooks Vienna, and still does something special for your birthday, then he just made a mistake and deserves forgiveness.

What I instantly thought.

I was thinking this as you normally have to input passport details don’t you?

lavenderhillss · 22/02/2023 16:34

He’s just told me he booked the hotel, and was going to book the flights tonight which is what made him think of his passport

Well I was thinking that was a lovely surprise....but I agree with @Gwen82 , I dont know of any holiday or airline that would refund tickets 2 weeks before the departure date due to an out of date passport.

Ilikewinter · 22/02/2023 16:34

Sorry cross posted OP! 😂

What I instantly thought.

The op has been led up the garden path.

last year was a shit holiday

this year is a Boyfriend who lies about booking and then makes up a daft excuse as to why can’t go.

I would put a huge some of money on the holiday never having been booked. Go on Op, ask him to send on the booking confirmation?

Ilikewinter · 22/02/2023 16:35

Hopefully he will either rebook or take you some where nice in the UK....or maybe both!

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 22/02/2023 16:35

He never booked it.

My thoughts. My DH realised his passport was out of date a week before we went to Paris and was able to get one 2 days before we flew.

So hotel booked but full refundable? That’s possible.
But who asks someone to book annual leave and talks about the holiday as being booked as a present… but does t book flights?

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 22/02/2023 16:37

If you think he booked it, call his bluff say you'll go on your own and send the details for the hotel over.

Fenella123 · 22/02/2023 16:37

My OH paid extra to get his passport renewed in about a week, last year.

You could check to see if this is still possible OP 😈

OneMoreCookieMonster · 22/02/2023 16:37

He's lying. Simple. You would book both together. Bet, he will suddenly have to work as well.

Sure way to tell if he's lying is does he have to travel for work or has he been away recently? He would know if his passport was due to expire if so.

He won’t

Solittletimeforwine · 22/02/2023 16:38

Surprised at these answers. It’s not like you’re entitled to a free holiday to Vienna . You can go another time. For goodness sake.

Butchyrestingface · 22/02/2023 16:39

Are ye thinking he made it all up, @lavenderhillss?
