To think some Facebook group admins are power mad martyrs?

I admin a Facebook group with some other lovely admins for women with a particular health condition. It’s all very low level work, and there is an occasional bun fight in the group it TBH us admins acknowledge that it requires very little sweating over. It’s just a Facebook group after all!

However I am a group member (not admin) in another group that started off as support for home schooling in lockdown and is now more of a generic support group around all types of education.

Because initially the group had a lot of families struggling through lockdown and facing various issues, the admins imposed a “Group members are not allowed to PM each other or exchange personal information”. I remember thinking how, though they have the best intentions WRT the safety of members, they cannot possibly impose that ridiculous rule.

however they STILL have the rule and love to remind members about it. They are posting what it seems like every single week saying something passive aggressive and angry like

“GROUP REMINDER

When you accepted the T&C’s of this group you accepted the rule that members CANNOT PM each other. We have YET AGAIN found out this rule has been broken!!!

Us admins give our free time, time away from our families, to run this group and we honestly feel exhausted trying to get members to keep up with basic rules. If you can’t follow the rules you know where the leave button is!!!”

I got kicked out today because I commented that they cannot impose a rule that disallows grown adults from messaging other people, let alone police it. And that they’d have more time if they didn’t spend so much of it chasing and dealing with silly rules.

I first got booted then got a PM from an admin saying I had “violated the laws and principles of the group” (😂) and also upset admins who work really hard to keep everyone happy and don’t appreciate their hard work being thrown back in their face. She asked for an apology.

I was feeling slightly childish and just replied with this emoji —> 😭

AIBU to think some Facebook admins are fucking nuts? They’re not managing a small country, it’s a Facebook group, and the weird power trips are utterly baffling. It’s not the first time I’ve seen something like this either and it spoils simple enjoyment of these groups.

@Stellaris22 You can report those to FB and also choose to ignore and block immediately any message you get from someone who is not your FB friend. FB does not automatically show you messages from people who are not FB friends - they come as 'message requests' that you can decline and block.

One of the Aldi ones is hilarious. The admins ban you for saying Lidl is cheaper.

😂. Love this

BertHandsome · 18/02/2023 15:23

FB admins are something else like. Fucking Bluey Meme groups are the worst I have for the drama. A child’s tv show … 🤯

The Admin of our village FB page went full on nuclear when a 2nd village FB page was created*. Apparently hers was the only "official" one and anybody using the 2nd one would be banned for life from the 1st. It got better when she was rightly called out on it in the comments apart from a lone comment agreeing with her. The problem was that comment came from someone who had the exact same cat in the exact same pose, on the exact same furniture as the Admin's.

*The reason the 2nd FB page was created was because the 1st one had so many rules and regs that very few people ever posted on it.

LaTangerina · 18/02/2023 15:35

Yes power hungry martyrs is an accurate description! 😂
I'm on a clothing group & there is one like this who came in tits-a-swinging for me recently.
They have this ridiculous rule, if someone asks a question on an item you're selling, you have to wait 24 hours after your reply to them to see if they still want it. Which is ridiculous when you have multiple people next in line for the item & risk losing another potential buyer if you wait too long. I was a bit under the 24 hours & sold to the next in line, 1st commenter ran to admin & told on me & she gave me a stern telling off.
One of the rules of the group is you always have to acknowledge admin if they remind you of their rules.
Stupidest rule ever because lots of people ask questions & then ghost 👻 you.
BTW lots of the other admin are lovely it's only this one woman who enjoys wielding her admin badge trying to get people to grovel, flooring them with her power every time 😂 I've seen her do it on that group so many times.
Bless her 🙏

I’ve seen people put on their CV that they are admin or moderator of a Facebook group.

Lolll

It’s a Facebook group, not a job. They* cannot tell anyone what to do outside the confines of the group*

Well they can if you join and agree to the rules

Rantypanties · 18/02/2023 15:43

@girlfriend44 because FB doesn’t allow you to charge for adverts?

If the page is such an issue then get more admins on board? It’s not a vital service that requires people to work full time! And he actually posted a message saying people replying thanks was blocking up the mailbox so no need to do it.

Improbablecat · 18/02/2023 15:44

Agree sometimes the admins of these things lost all sight of proportion.

I'm in a Facebook group for doctor mums, of all things. There are all sorts of strict rules - some of which I understand like never discussing patients. But there's also a rule that nothing must be shared outside the group, including the groups existence.

So you'll get a post like "I'm rotating to x hospital next month, where can I park?" And someone will reply saying "oh I'm not sure but it's local to me - shall I ask in my local town fb group?". Poster replies "oh yes please". Then an admin will pop up going "NO EXTERNAL SHARING ALLOWED YOU WILL BE BANNED!"

Like we're in some kind of secret doctor mums fight club and the existence of our group must be kept secret at all times. I stay in the group cos it's overall useful but I roll my eyes at admin a lot.

I need to know more. Under hobbies? Surely not under work experience?

doubleshift · 18/02/2023 15:50

I was banned from a group for apparently having a private chat with another member. When I responded that I hadn't PM'd anyone I was told that they couldn't prove we weren't chatting off the group but admin felt we were so the ban stood!
I just found myself another group.

Some people LOVE making more work for themselves.

Fantina · 18/02/2023 15:50

Our village page admins decline posts all the time including the announcement of who had been elected as MP for the area - no political posts allowed - even if it was just a fact about who it was and no commentary about their party. They can also take up to 24 hours to approve posts meaning most of them are completely out of date by the time they are online but they won’t let anyone else admin with them. It’s ridiculous.

The best thing about moving out of our village and somewhere urban where no one knows their neighbours, was leaving the Facebook group.

I don’t Miss the “strange man [translation: not white] wandering around” “Someone has left a troll doll near my wall, they’re gonna steal my horses” “Dog poo everywhere” “Can cars please not park too much on pavements” “Can card please mount pavements when they park” “Who is the white van?!” Posts

I only stayed on because it was the only way to find out when the ice cream van was gonna come 🤣

Yep. Some facebook group admins I know are arseholes. I put a funny joke on a 'humour/joke/memes' page some months back, and got it deleted because it was too rude apparently. It wasn't - it was Carry On film humour! Admin said if I put anything else like that I would be banned. So I said 'you're trippin' if you think that was rude! And you're deluded if you think you'll be banning ME! I'm out!' Then I unfollowed the group, and blocked the Admin person.

SatInMySpottyOnesie · 18/02/2023 15:57

God Yes - a woman runs a local chat
group where I live. She’s such a fucking martyr and dictator all
rolled into one bored. overly made-up retired civil servant 😂

She’s dead goady and posts “rude” memes (they’re not, they’re just cringe 🥴) waiting for someone to object and when they do she gives them the “it’s my group, if you don’t like it fuck off” line.

She is constantly giving orders out about what businesses are allowed to post and when. If she could make them
wear a hair shirt and parade down the high street to show thanks she’d be creaming herself 🤣

Please tell us which group it is and I’m deffo joining Totes MerriPeri or what ever just for the craic 😂😈

AngeloMysterioso · 18/02/2023 15:58

My local Mums fb group is up to 9.6k members now… and the woman who started it still insists on being the only admin/moderator and all posts have to be approved by her. There’s no point asking about anything if you’re in any kind of hurry for an answer because it can take days for a post to get published. And she moans non stop about how hard she works to keep the group running smoothly! … plenty of other people have volunteered to help but she turns them all down.

Fizbosshoes · 18/02/2023 16:00

I am part of a local fb group for a small town. You can't post anything at all without it being approved by a moderator or admin, which in some way I understand but if you want to post about a road closure, accident, train problem that is happening now its usually out of date by the time someone has time to check the post.

One time I remembered a year or 2 before someone advertised a holiday cottage that they had booked but then changed their mind about. I searched but couldn't find it and I wanted to see if the OP still had details, or remembered the agency they booked with. I asked on the page and specifically said it wasnt a holiday cottage owned by a member of the page (every other member seems to have a enormous holiday home) it was in x Town, had 3 bedrooms and slept 6. Moderator refused to post and replied privately to me that it was clearly < insert name> holiday cottage which I would have found if I searched properly. The cottage they implied it was, (but definitely wasn't!) was in a different town and slept about 10...so I never got any further finding it.
