People who have no social media

I find it intriguing.

Just started working for someone new, was having a nosey looking for them on social media. The man isn’t on it at all, can’t be found, zero when typed into Google, the woman has a Fb profile that looks like from a long time ago, with 29 friends…that’s it, nothing else.
Does anyone find that unusual, or if you’re like this, why?
They are youngish, late 30’s, professional, good looking etc..these type of people usually have the lot on Sm.

I just find it intriguing

I don't, never have, and never will, have any involvement with social media in any way, shape or form - it would add nothing to my life and would, in fact, almost certainly detract from it. What benefit does it have? What is the point of it - just time wasting, fake, virtual crap. I prefer to spend my time doing useful and constructive things. There are many others who feel similarly.
Does that answer your question?

londonrach · 10/02/2023 21:23

It really isn't that uncommon....yabu.

xogossipgirlxo · 10/02/2023 21:23

get a life

SocksAndTheCity · 10/02/2023 21:24

I don't have any of it and never have. The whole idea bores me shitless and I already spend enough time looking at screens that when I'm not I'd rather engage with the real world.

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 10/02/2023 21:25

I am heavily involved in a hobby, and was on two national committees, and I used to organise large events.

it all became too much, because as ever, too many people just love to criticise without offering solutions or volunteering their own time. I left Facebook when I left the committee because despite it being publicly announced I was no longer involved, people insisted on dragging me back into it left right and centre.

Notplayingball · 10/02/2023 21:25

I use a pseudonym on SM so I can't be found. 40yo. No interest in it. I phone people to talk and just don't feel the need to share my life on SM.

Calistan · 10/02/2023 21:26

Why would you be on sm? I deleted fb years ago, never even looked at Instagram, never saw the interest in looking at pictures, bah to tiktok, twitter is insufferable. Here and reddit are interesting.

MichelleScarn · 10/02/2023 21:26

I've only got Facebook, but my name on it is nothing like my real name!

DontStopMeNow7 · 10/02/2023 21:26

I recently deleted my Fb account. I have no other social media except for LinkedIn which I almost never use.

fairgame84 · 10/02/2023 21:26

I got rid of it when DD was born as it wrecked my mental health. Life is better without it.
The people who care about me and who are part of my life stay in contact anyway.

Exactly. Best using all free time on MN😂

Redglitter · 10/02/2023 21:27

but I agree no one under 50 is on Facebook

My FB friends list says that's definitely not the case

illiterato · 10/02/2023 21:27

Linkedin could have been so good, but it’s now so bad- can I just add how I’m grateful for the opportunity blah blah blah 🤮. Also forgot to add that I was late for an interview because I saved a baby polar bear from drowning. The next day I was sitting outside the station panhandling when the polar bear called up and offered me a seven figure salary.

I’ve basically given up SM. FB is for attention seekers and moaners and instagram is for narcs. Too old for tiktok.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 10/02/2023 21:27

I would think they had common sense.

underneaththeash · 10/02/2023 21:27

I only have Facebook which we post on infrequently. Mainly to share photos with overseas relatives.

i can’t see the attraction.

VestaTilley · 10/02/2023 21:28

YABU. My DH AND DM both left Facebook. DH’s friend (very clever lecturer at Oxbridge) has a brick phone and no social media at all. Perfectly happy and he manages perfectly well. It’s really not essential.

Theraffarian · 10/02/2023 21:28

No social media in my name , FB that I use for one purpose under a pseudonym . Use WhatsApp for messages and group chats and sending the odd photo , no need to broadcast to or be found by randoms .

Sandyd1035 · 10/02/2023 21:29

Never been on social media and no interest to do so .

GoodNamesAreGone · 10/02/2023 21:29

Lots and lots of normal people live normal lives away from social media.

I don't do what you would refer to as social media - fb, tic toc, twitter etc. I'm not interested in what anyone had for dinner or some beach holiday they're on, neither do I fancy getting my kit out and showing off to mostly complete strangers, or arguing over silly things.

I have a good network of friends I keep in touch with via watsapp, texts and I belong to several online forums where I interact with members daily. The difference is, we all share common interests on specific hobbies and interests and have meaningful conversations online and I do not find it a waste of time.

To answer your question, yes! People do.

Potatomashed · 10/02/2023 21:29

How do all of you without social media find out about local events and interesting things happening in the area? I have moved areas twice in the past few years and it’s been an amazing way to figure out what’s happening in an area.

Calistan · 10/02/2023 21:30

The pathetic ice bucket thing and blatant ai training of the post a picture from 10 years ago and now challenge on fb did it for me. Also the smugness, the endless smugness.

DontStopMeNow7 · 10/02/2023 21:30

On top of Fb I also deleted WhatsApp. My mental health and peace of mind is much improved.

Borborygmus · 10/02/2023 21:30

I've never had any social media. I can't imagine it would be of the slightest use to me. When I've seen other people's facebook feeds it seems to me to be 99.99% pointless drivel.

Isbemorelikemeandbelesslikeyou · 10/02/2023 21:31

@Redglitter Same 🤷🏻‍♀️People in twenties and thirties and up (I don’t think I really know any teenagers, maybe friends kids and they have profiles but used less)
Everyone I know and have ever looked up is on Sm in some form, they’re not people needing to get a life, on the contrary many have a very full one.
I just found it fairly unusual

I have no social media, I like the fact if you Google me you won’t find me!

This.

I read once that a tribe somewhere were wary of having their photo taken as they believed photos were the work of the devil and every time you have your photo taken you lose a bit of your soul.

I can't honestly say I disagree. Social media is not for me.
