To think the adoration of Zelensky in the UK feels very wrong?

WarWhatIsItGoodFor · 08/02/2023 21:18

Exactly that. Why are UK politicians lapping it all up and hanging on to his every word? The laughter from MPs when he said he enjoyed English tea but now wants English planes… in what sense is that funny? He is wanting war planes to cause more bloodshed, death and destruction. I hope this doesn’t lead to Russian retaliation.

Personally I think he is doing a Sterling job, keeping worldwide focus on the war with Russia, that they didn’t start, and getting help to stop Russia. If Russia had won they would now be turning elsewhere., probably to NATO countries where we would have to send our soldiers.

I would not want to see Russia walking into other countries

A surprising number of first time posters all spouting an anti-Ukraine line on this thread. A coincidence I am sure.

Appeasement worked out so well the last time we tried it. What makes anyone think the result will not be the same if we go down that route again?

Thank you for spotting this. It explains a lot. I should have done the same with the Brexit threads.

Many MN should demand 20 verifiable, varied threads before allowing posting to wipe out the bots?

Igotjelly · 08/02/2023 21:59

The amount of either Russian bots or idiots on this thread is outstanding. What’s sinister about leader meeting with his allies to ask for support to stop an aggressive, larger neighbour from raping, pillaging and devouring his nation.

And I’m sorry but he absolutely is brave, he could have left right back at the beginning but he didn’t.

I must admit that I was thinking he should have worn a suit. But he's got bigger fish to fry.

(A tiny bit me, as well, if I'm honest.)

Yes.
Until war broke out Ukraine was recognised as one of the most corrupt countries in the world for both money laundering and the trafficking of women.

Lets be honest, he only came to get more free stuff. We have been hugely generous because we recognise the power difference between Ukraine and their aggressive neighbour. However, there is a sensible limit. We are also a country with vast debt and a cost of living crisis, but we have a government that seems to keep finding more money behind the sofa for Ukraine. Soon we will be left with nothing to defend ourselves with.

Ukraine is a corrupt country because of CENTURIES of being under Russian rule. These things become so embedded they take a long time to root out. But they were finally making progress before Russia decided to have another go. Ukrainians know their country is corrupt. Zelensky knows it too. They talk about it all the time in their Parliament and were taking drastic steps to eliminate corruption. I have a lot of family living in Ukraine, and before the war they said they were finally seeing significant improvements.

Confusedabouttheworld · 08/02/2023 22:00

The West has been getting a good return on investment as by sending weapons, they are fast destroying much of the Russian military’s capabilities.

How do you find out if someone is a first time poster? Do you just search their name?

And yet a lot of people actually in the military are very concerned, and demoralised, by the so-called "sensationalist bollocks" (which is very far from sensationalist or bollocks).

I'm not disputing that we should support Ukraine but it's both blind and ignorant to pretend that that doesn't impact on UK capability.

impact on UK capability isn't the same as Soon we will be left with nothing to defend ourselves with.

Yanbu. People seem to have forgotten the history of Ukraine prior to this war. This is a US/NATO proxy war and Zelensky is their puppet. I feel so sorry for the ordinary Ukrainian's going to certain death (the death toll is huge) for a war that will only end when the West decides. The US is the biggest warmonger in the world, got to keep feeding $$$$ to the industrial war complex.

Being a conspiracy theorist makes you feel like an intellectual I bet.

You’re not.

Even Neville Chamberlain would be ashamed you and those other miserable Stop The War Putin apologists.

Ukraine simply wants the right to make its own laws, the right to manage its own borders, and the right to its own currency. Putin doesn’t want them to have those rights. That’s why he invaded, and NATO and the US have FA to do with this.

I don’t know about you but I studied Russian at university, lived there for a year and can speak the language. I can, and regularly do, follow Russian state coverage of the war. They are the ones who are driving this conflict - if they weren’t, they wouldn’t have to lie about everything and anything.

I think Zelensky is playing a part, like the actor he is.

He's playing the part of someone who is doing whatever it takes, sucking up to who ever, to get the armaments Ukrain needs to repel Russia. And good on him. If Sunak, Biden ect like the sucking up but give him the weapons his country needs, I've no problem with that.

I'm usually a "dove* when it comes to armed warfare. I've been politically active since the Vietnam war, but in the case of Ukrain, I'm more "hawk".

If Putin is successful in Yukrain, where next? Poland? A UN country? Then we are all at war with Russia, and probably China, because they may take the opportunity to invade Tiwan.

Bs0u416d · 08/02/2023 22:03

What's you're alternative OP? Animation of Ukraine? Is that more palatable for you?

Sorry but you are aware that Ukraine is a UN member state? Assume you mean NATO.

CrimsonPostBox · 08/02/2023 22:03

Russian oppression poisoned the culture of many eastern European countries, and caused a great deal of embedded corruption. Ukrainians themselves don't deny this. They know corruption has been a terrible after-effect of the USSR, and that is one of the reasons they wanted to distance themselves from Russia and become closer to Europe. People saying that Ukraine is a corrupt country which we should defend have a very short-sighted view of history.

UGH THIS THREAD IS MAKING MY BLOOD BOIL.

Yes.

He's very charming. He speaks well.

But my spidey-senses are tingling...I don't trust him an inch. Something is off. No evidence to back it up, just a feeling.

Quick!!! Someone text Rishi, @DaisyCornflowerBlue thinks Zski's a bit off!

I don't think the adoration is for him personally, but for the way he and the Ukranians have stood up to an attempt at an illegal invasion of their country.
If we never stand up to Russia for fear of retaliation, then we have learned nothing from history.

Absolutely this.

Cattenberg · 08/02/2023 22:04

At the start of the war, Zelensky was offered safe passage out of Ukraine by other European leaders. He didn’t take it and apparently stayed in Kyiv as that massive column of Russian tanks slowly approached the capital. Russia also sent assassination squads to hunt Zelensky down and kill him, but he held his nerve and continued to govern Ukraine.

Can you imagine Putin being that brave? He’s probably thousands of miles from the front lines, hiding in one of his bunkers in Switzerland or Siberia.

Neededanewuserhandle · 08/02/2023 22:04

So your dismissal of WW2 is incorrect.
I was talking about tank production and deployment, that's all.

It’s not a case of Russia bad, Ukraine good, it’s just not that black and white.

Yeah, it is though.

Exactly. There are very, very few instances in history where one party is completely in the right and another party is completely in the wrong. This is one of those examples.

Ukraine aren’t perfect but they are at least human. The Russians have shown themselves to be worse than animals.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 08/02/2023 22:08

What would you have him do? Cow tail to Putin? Give up his country? Surrender? He and his country invaded nobody.

Lol @needastrongoneagain it's kowtow 🤣🤣🤣
