To think the adoration of Zelensky in the UK feels very wrong?

Exactly that. Why are UK politicians lapping it all up and hanging on to his every word? The laughter from MPs when he said he enjoyed English tea but now wants English planes… in what sense is that funny? He is wanting war planes to cause more bloodshed, death and destruction. I hope this doesn’t lead to Russian retaliation.

Lets be honest, he only came to get more free stuff. We have been hugely generous because we recognise the power difference between Ukraine and their aggressive neighbour. However, there is a sensible limit. We are also a country with vast debt and a cost of living crisis, but we have a government that seems to keep finding more money behind the sofa for Ukraine.

I'm not against helping Ukraine, but this does bother me too.

Do you know why he has to do this? Because Russia strolled into the Crimea and the whole world went "Oh dear, that's not very nice. You shouldn't do that. Oh well, you're here now."

A comedian who stood for government as a joke, to show how poor the then government was, and who never really expected to be elected, is now having to fight for his country's existence because the rest of the world was afraid of confronting a bully.

What do you think will happen if he loses? A few years ago all Putin wanted was Crimea...

Yup, totally agree.

Genevieva · 08/02/2023 21:32

Sensationalist bollocks.
Then look up how much a fighter jet costs and how long the procurement timelines are. Plus it takes years to become adept at flying them well, so offering Ukrainian soldiers a crash course before sending them into the battle field is one sure way to ensure they don't make it back. This tactic doesn't help Ukraine win.

Honestly, I get the argument for not having a cease fire as it may be used by Russia to rearm. However, history shows that all modern wars end around a table and not on the battlefield. That means that even while they continue to fight they need to get talking. Turkey offered to provide a venue last year. It looked like it was going ahead, then the UK and the US persuaded Zelensky not to go. They clearly thought they could provide enough assistance to humiliate Russia on the battlefield, but they were wrong.

@everlovelyjewel 😂

DontGoBreakingMyHeart · 08/02/2023 21:32

I don’t trust him.

I feel for the average people in Ukraine, but I don’t trust him an inch, he’s actively goading the Russians.

Ukraine and Russia is a complicated situation. It’s not a case of Russia bad, Ukraine good, it’s just not that black and white.

We have to help Ukraine because of where not doing so could lead Russia, but let’s not pretend that Ukraine is a country well known for its human rights.

Ukraine is one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

SweetSakura · 08/02/2023 21:32

I think in the era of social media and 24/7 rolling news it's too much to expect most people to see shades of gray or nuance (if it ever was a reasonable expectation- people like having heroes). And zelensky has proven to be adept at playing the media/social media game.

My sister in law is Ukrainian and i know her family is deeply divided in their opinions on zelensky - some days they don't speak to each other for days after discussing him!

Nousernamesleftatall · 08/02/2023 21:33

Yanbu. People seem to have forgotten the history of Ukraine prior to this war. This is a US/NATO proxy war and Zelensky is their puppet. I feel so sorry for the ordinary Ukrainian's going to certain death (the death toll is huge) for a war that will only end when the West decides. The US is the biggest warmonger in the world, got to keep feeding $$$$ to the industrial war complex.

WhatTrophy · 08/02/2023 21:33

I'm happy that the UK government stands with Ukraine against Russia, what else should they do, hide and let Russia have their way?

Zelensky personally was on his way out because of fraud/corruption allegations and was implicated in the Pandora papers. He, as president, was probably saved by the outbreak of war...

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 08/02/2023 21:33

Yes.

He's very charming. He speaks well.

But my spidey-senses are tingling...I don't trust him an inch. Something is off. No evidence to back it up, just a feeling.

Fordian · 08/02/2023 21:33

Now. Can we come clean? How much Russian money is sloshing around the corridors of powers in Britain? Who bought what? Why is this still not clear?

I wish it was easy to be on the 'side' of 'right' and 'wrong'. But grownups know there's often, if not always, 'grey'.

However, Russia invaded a sovereign country (remember how important 'sovrinty' is to us Brexitty Brits), thinking it was an easy win. The 'bringing bloodshed to his people' remark is disgusting. As you @Neededanewuserhandle clearly know. We see you.

We, in the West, dance a pretty dance of brinkmanship. But I believe the vast majority of us support Ukraine against Russian aggression.

It's funny because he's clever, he knows how to charm us. I'm totally behind the UK govt btw - one thing I think the Tories have got right.

I agree, it is the only thing the Tories have got right. Although I don't for a moment thing they give a shit about Ukraine, they just know Zelensky make them look good. Zelensky himself is doing a great job, although he seems to be enjoying it all a bit much for my liking although thank God for him, finally, Putin has met his match. As for Putin, he's got himself into a right mess with this and has no good options. He should have stuck to election meddling, that was working out treat for him. Let's not forget as well, this war could end tomorrow if the Russians just went home, its Russia's choice to continue.

2013isback · 08/02/2023 21:34

... he said he enjoyed English tea but now wants English planes… in what sense is that funny?

It's wrong, but I believe he has learned English relatively recently and is not completely fluent. "Aнглійські" often informally stands in for
"Британські" or :Великобританії" in Ukrainian. It would be kind of mean for UK Parliamentarians to nitpick it, in context. Do you suppose the FMs of Scotland, Wales, and NI should withdraw their support now?

Kitcaterpillar · 08/02/2023 21:36

It’s not a case of Russia bad, Ukraine good, it’s just not that black and white.

Yeah, it is though.

Applesandcarrots · 08/02/2023 21:36

Don't feed it, people

TheYearOfSmallThings · 08/02/2023 21:36

He needs planes and he is not wrong to ask for them publicly, however much you don't care what happens in Ukraine.

Changechangechanging · 08/02/2023 21:37

He is wanting war planes to cause more bloodshed, death and destruction

you know it was Russia that invaded Ukraine, don’t you? What are they supposed to do? Stand by and watch it happen? If that had been the case, it wouldn’t have stopped at Ukraine.

Fordian · 08/02/2023 21:37

Cosmos123 · 08/02/2023 21:27

There has and will continue to be lots of innocent lives which will be lost for this War.
Both sides.

I don't want my taxes to go on fighter planes.

I want my taxes to go on the NHS and nurses and teacher payrises.

Poland is next. Then?

Don't believe this won't happen.

I say send the planes. We're still effectively fighting the First World War. Russian aggression needs to be challenged.

ethermint · 08/02/2023 21:38

you have to admire his leadership though, in the face of Putin, I don't think anyone would have anticipated it going like it has with Ukraine holding out and doing as well as they have. I think he's a strong, charismatic and noble leader, a real leader who sets a good example for the world.

PurpleButterflyWings · 08/02/2023 21:38
Hmm
StridTheKiller · 08/02/2023 21:38

I'd do him.

PineappleMel · 08/02/2023 21:28

I wonder what ability the UK has these days to make steel and weapons? Not like we had in WW2 that's for sure. Everything has been outsourced.

Do you have anything to support your statement? How many tanks could the UK produce per day? Just asking

WW2 has fuck all to do with it.
Technology and warfare has moved on massively.
There would be no point in churning out 1000s of tanks today.
Do you have anything to support your statement?
Yes, the fact it's true.
It is utter sensationalist bollocks to claim that
Soon we will be left with nothing to defend ourselves with.
We aren't fighting a war - we a lot of remaining firepower and we aren't sending very much of it to Ukraine - you are talking utter shit.

UWhatNow · 08/02/2023 21:40

Ukraine is all that stands between megalomaniacal Russian expansion and potentially all out war with NATO. Are people on this thread really arguing that Putin is a poor victim here? Putin is a cold, narcissistic, dangerous man. Jeez, some very naive and thick posters here (…Or Russian bots)

bookworm14 · 08/02/2023 21:40

How’s the weather in Moscow?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/02/2023 21:41

Hello Russian bot.

HikingforScenery · 08/02/2023 21:31

I think the involvement of other countries like the UK is just escalating things. I don’t find the ukrainian president charming at all. She actually gives me the creeps.

'Escalating' what? Genuinely? Russia's aggression towards democratic governments on its doorstep?
