To think the adoration of Zelensky in the UK feels very wrong?

Exactly that. Why are UK politicians lapping it all up and hanging on to his every word? The laughter from MPs when he said he enjoyed English tea but now wants English planes… in what sense is that funny? He is wanting war planes to cause more bloodshed, death and destruction. I hope this doesn’t lead to Russian retaliation.

I’m a little concerned with how easily Zelensky talks politicians of a country into putting jets back on as an option. I thought there was a limit on how much we wanted to escalate? This is looking like the big war now, Europe v Asia.

I don't mean to be trivial but I think he's sexy AF. I totally would. Sorry .

Same.

LlynTegid · 08/02/2023 21:42

The adoration by UK politicians hides things such as being much slower than several other countries to offer practical help last spring such as the visas or other permissions for Ukrainians to come to this country for safety.

RosaGallica · 08/02/2023 21:43

I might be happier when I hear from the French. It feels like the schoolboys in Westminster are playing games again.

Tannedandfake · 08/02/2023 21:43

Neededanewuserhandle · 08/02/2023 21:21

I don't think the adoration is for him personally, but for the way he and the Ukranians have stood up to an attempt at an illegal invasion of their country.
If we never stand up to Russia for fear of retaliation, then we have learned nothing from history.

Agree with this ☝️

What would you have him do? Cow tail to Putin? Give up his country? Surrender? He and his country invaded nobody.

Neededanewuserhandle · 08/02/2023 21:39

WW2 has fuck all to do with it.
Technology and warfare has moved on massively.
There would be no point in churning out 1000s of tanks today.
Do you have anything to support your statement?
Yes, the fact it's true.
It is utter sensationalist bollocks to claim that
Soon we will be left with nothing to defend ourselves with.
We aren't fighting a war - we a lot of remaining firepower and we aren't sending very much of it to Ukraine - you are talking utter shit.

And yet a lot of people actually in the military are very concerned, and demoralised, by the so-called "sensationalist bollocks" (which is very far from sensationalist or bollocks).

I'm not disputing that we should support Ukraine but it's both blind and ignorant to pretend that that doesn't impact on UK capability.

LakeTiticaca · 08/02/2023 21:45

So you think Ukraine should just roll over and Russia take their country?
Do you think Europe should have rolled over in 1939 and let Hitler take over?
Sure you do.....

Santasjingleballs · 08/02/2023 21:47

of course after all it is a proxy war ;)

Warriormum1 · 08/02/2023 21:47

MrsMikeDrop · 08/02/2023 21:22

I think his bravery and tenacity is admirable. Don't think many leadera would be willing to out their lives on the line for their country. It's not surprising he's thought of so highly. You do realise people are actually dying, right OP?

Ordinary Ukrainian people are putting their lives on the line for their country - not Zelensky, OP. He's doing photo shoots for Vogue, appearing on the David Letterman show and travelling the world in private jets while young Ukrainian soldiers are being relentlessly thrown into the meat grinder whether they like it or not. A khaki t shirt and a photo shoot does not make you a hero.

RobertaFirmino · 08/02/2023 21:50

I must say, it's a complete mystery how a man who has made millions of Ukranians laugh their socks off in his previous role as a comedy actor is so well-liked. Do let me know if you ever find out why people seem to take to him...

DrHousecuredme · 08/02/2023 21:50

PineappleMel · 08/02/2023 21:21

A year in, I'd like to know how many people are still hungry for this war.

How many want to send tanks? To send fighter jets? To keep escalating this?

Um... not many people were hungry for war in the first place. Putin dragged everybody into it.
The Russians have no choice (most ordinary people anyway)
Ukraine have to defend themselves and everybody else is dragged into the mess because if Russia gets what they want then they'll carry on to the next country...then the next.
It's a shit situation but leaving Ukraine to it really isn't an option.

Quveas · 08/02/2023 21:51

A surprising number of first time posters all spouting an anti-Ukraine line on this thread. A coincidence I am sure.

Appeasement worked out so well the last time we tried it. What makes anyone think the result will not be the same if we go down that route again?

OdeToBarney · 08/02/2023 21:51

If we don't assist Ukraine, Poland is next. Did some PPs really learn nothing about WW2 at school?

stickygotstuck · 08/02/2023 21:51

Fordian · 08/02/2023 21:33

Now. Can we come clean? How much Russian money is sloshing around the corridors of powers in Britain? Who bought what? Why is this still not clear?

I wish it was easy to be on the 'side' of 'right' and 'wrong'. But grownups know there's often, if not always, 'grey'.

However, Russia invaded a sovereign country (remember how important 'sovrinty' is to us Brexitty Brits), thinking it was an easy win. The 'bringing bloodshed to his people' remark is disgusting. As you @Neededanewuserhandle clearly know. We see you.

We, in the West, dance a pretty dance of brinkmanship. But I believe the vast majority of us support Ukraine against Russian aggression.

Quite.

BMW6 · 08/02/2023 21:52

Fuck Off Moscow bots

Casilero · 08/02/2023 21:52

Genevieva · 08/02/2023 21:24

Yes.
Until war broke out Ukraine was recognised as one of the most corrupt countries in the world for both money laundering and the trafficking of women.

Lets be honest, he only came to get more free stuff. We have been hugely generous because we recognise the power difference between Ukraine and their aggressive neighbour. However, there is a sensible limit. We are also a country with vast debt and a cost of living crisis, but we have a government that seems to keep finding more money behind the sofa for Ukraine. Soon we will be left with nothing to defend ourselves with.

100% this. In fact there was a pretty good article in the Guardian in 2019 about this but that's all been forgotten now, along with his piano playing knob antics.

spuddel · 08/02/2023 21:54

It stinks to high heaven op.

Ambertonix · 08/02/2023 21:54

@scatterolight I couldnt agree with you more. I find the whole thing very very sinister.

HereComesMaleficent · 08/02/2023 21:55

Well OP there's two men in this fight, Zelenzkyy or Putin.

I personally feel the horse to back in this race, is the former not the latter 🤔

Fordian · 08/02/2023 21:56

@Neededanewuserhandle we are actually still fighting WW1. So your dismissal of WW2 is incorrect. The political seismic plates of Europe are still moving. There is no point at which history 'ends'.

Russia is still humiliated by the successful freedom movements, releasing the Eastern Block from its control. These countries have, for the large part, enjoyed the ride (while looking at Hungary..). There are waverers, like Turkey; but Ukraine I believe wanted to not be cabbage hurler Soviets, but Westerners. Yes, corruption (have you been KEEPING UP with our government, recently?).. but the Russian aggression, if not sheer arrogance, has galvanised minds.

If Russia thinks it can stroll back into Ukraine unchallenged, where next?

Toddlerteaplease · 08/02/2023 21:56

I must admit that I was thinking he should have worn a suit. But he's got bigger fish to fry.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 08/02/2023 21:57

pointythings · 08/02/2023 21:23

I think we should always remember that it was Russia that invaded Ukraine, and that therefore they should not be appeased in any way.

This.

Wheresthebeach · 08/02/2023 21:57

Crimea…Ukraine…wtf do you think would happen next?

Dear God….

CrimsonPostBox · 08/02/2023 21:58

Ukraine is a corrupt country because of CENTURIES of being under Russian rule. These things become so embedded they take a long time to root out. But they were finally making progress before Russia decided to have another go.
