To think the adoration of Zelensky in the UK feels very wrong?

Exactly that. Why are UK politicians lapping it all up and hanging on to his every word? The laughter from MPs when he said he enjoyed English tea but now wants English planes… in what sense is that funny? He is wanting war planes to cause more bloodshed, death and destruction. I hope this doesn’t lead to Russian retaliation.

If anyone thinks Russia would stop at the Ukraine/Poland border, they are deluded and that is why Europe are helping him as they are“

“Correct. Nearly all European counties recognise that helping Ukraine is in their own self interest too.”

Europe are doing it in the hopes of exploiting trade and energy. I think it's hilarious people think Russia would head deeper into Europe. That is propaganda to make sure all of us, whilst struggling, keep supporting this war and hopefully send a few planes

But Europe loved Russian energy and trade, and laundering their oligarch’s money.

So, why has Europe stopped exploiting that, in order to try to help Ukraine now, if it is truly such a hilarious idea that Europe has reason of its own to fear Russia?

No. You and the people who advance this argument are the ones who are putting us all at further risk. Or at least you would be if your views weren't minority ones.

Because of what Putin is, there is no possibility of giving him a bit of what he wants to pacify him. We've tried that already, Russia were allowed to start multiple land wars in Europe without the West really doing anything much. And that approach failed. It only emboldened Putin. It follows that more of the same would embolden him further. He's not playing with logic. People like that can't be appeased, only beaten. Otherwise this will keep happening, and the price we have to pay becomes higher.

The potential nuclear war stuff also doesn't wash, a year in. Russia have had loads of pretexts to use a nuke, and they haven't. Every time Ukraine is given anything by the West and/or retakes some territory, there's always someone ghouling about nuclear weapons, and it never happens. The fact is, they've been given ample excuse already, and they haven't because they don't want to.

People like me maybe have been to Russia and understand the internal pressures even putin has . I vem he has to answer to people around him , believe it or not . No war will end without peace talks . If you think it’s ok to keep on starving people so we support a war for a further 5 or more years then by al mean support it , but I will not .
putin has no interest in taking European territory and anyone thinking that needs to have a good look at history and politicians involving Russia .
min the meanwhile let me pay a bit more high tax to fill up zelisky pockets while my kids struggle without proper nhs and resources . Makes perfect sense , not !

Funny how the pushing for peace is always aimed at Ukraine. Never russia

Everyone knows Russia does not want peace. They want Ukraine to give up and give away their country to Russia.
Of course the people calling for this would never want this to happen in the country they live in. They want Ukranians to give up and suffer in a way they would never accept for their own families.

Natsku · 09/02/2023 12:39

He's literally taking European territory right now - Ukraine is a European country.

Autumnnewname · 09/02/2023 12:39

@Iseered

Can you explain? Russia already shares a border with EU countries.

What is it about Ukraine that triggers them so much

He's literally occupying European territory now. In his third land war in Europe in the last 15 years.

As with the last person who rubbished the idea that Putin might launch further invasions, you too should get in touch with the Finnish and Swedish governments. They'll be reeeeeeeeally impressed that you've been to Russia.

I do allow myself a snort of derisory laughter, I must admit.

PerkingFaintly · 09/02/2023 12:42

Russia raised concerns for example about having an EU land border Their concerns were pretty much identical to the concerns the EU had about a land border in Ireland. Yet Russia were unreasonable twats to have concerns whilst the EU were totally justified with theirs. Hypocrisy.

Erm, Iseered, did you just suggest it would be OK for the UK to invade Ireland?

Would prevent land border with the EU <tick>
Ireland used to be part of British Empire <tick>
Many (most) people in Ireland speak English <tick>

Or do you think it's not OK of Russia to invade Ukraine?

daytriptovulcan · 09/02/2023 12:34

So if killers, criminals and rapists took over your town, and locked you in the cellar, you wouldn't ask for help?
He's asking for what he needs to liberate his people. His cause is righteous.

If you read the UN reports (before Russia invaded) you would see that Ukrainian soldiers were murderers, criminals, rapists and torturers if you were the wrong kind of Ukrainian.

This

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 09/02/2023 12:47

Yes, I wouldn't try and get any logic out of it @PerkingFaintly. That's not going to happen.

Autumnnewname · 09/02/2023 12:50

@Iseered Before russia invaded?

So before 2014

Can you point me to these IN reports prior to the little green men having a jolly holiday in Donbas in 2014

I don't believe that will happen. And I do blame Ukraine, the EU, the US and the West for not doing more before Russia invaded. Maybe it would not have made a difference but we will never know.

The more of your posts I read, the more utterly batshit they become. You're seriously comparing Russian expansionist aggression and sabre rattling to EU maintaining a trade border on the island of Ireland??

In other words, shipped in Russians, shipped in Russian soldiers, and pro-Russian people collaborating with them, just after Russia had invaded and annexed Crimea.

Daftasabroom · 09/02/2023 12:56

@Genevieva However, history shows that all modern wars end around a table and not on the battlefield.

Try telling that to the Syrians, the Chechens, and the Georgians. You probably ought to add if Afghans while you're at it.

LadyJ2023 · 09/02/2023 13:00

It's nice to see that Munich 1938 mentality still lives and thrives in the UK of 2023. Why should the UK care about the world, just sell them.

And at least in 1938, they didn't have the failure of 1938 to look back and learn from. In 2023 there isn't even that excuse.

Well, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Those, who are doing it despite being fully aware of the past are just sociopaths without any character and excuse.

So in order to mitigate the risk of having an EU/NATO country on its border the solution is for Russia to deny the right of Ukraine to exist, invade and absorb it into Greater Russia, thus ensuring that it now shares a border with four existing NATO and EU countries?
