To think the adoration of Zelensky in the UK feels very wrong?

Exactly that. Why are UK politicians lapping it all up and hanging on to his every word? The laughter from MPs when he said he enjoyed English tea but now wants English planes… in what sense is that funny? He is wanting war planes to cause more bloodshed, death and destruction. I hope this doesn’t lead to Russian retaliation.

You mean Putin, right?

Fascinating collection of Russian trolls and Useful Idiots in this thread. Sometimes hard to tell the difference between the two.

Care to elaborate ?

BigMC93 · 09/02/2023 09:21

It’s British planes, not English…

You’re very very wrong!! It’s within Britains interest to defend Ukraine.

We can not leave ourselves without planes and tanks. Johnson should just shut up- he's trying to turn himself into some sort of hero. He's an oaf.

Our planes and tanks staying here will be of no use unless Putin is stopped He won’t stop at Ukrainian he has said he wants all previously held Russian territory back

FatSealSmugSoup · 09/02/2023 09:21

Doing the right thing is not always the easy thing.

You're old enough to know that.

PitYerTapOan · 08/02/2023 23:45

In simple terms, the West is at war with Russia.

No we are not. Why the fuck would you say that? Do you seriously not even know when you are and are not at war? For fucks' sakes.

Widely accepted that the west is fighting a proxy war with Russia. Why else do you think we are arming them ? NATO can’t put boots on the ground to defend Ukraine because that will lead to significant escalation and possibly WW3.

Putin has no moral compass and unfortunately he thinks he has the justification to do what he’s doing. I don’t think he’s necessarily convinced anyone that the plan will work, but given how many people have mysteriously fallen out of windows in Russia, would you disagree with him ?

Quite so, after I wrote it I knew I should have put "the ability to convince people that it will work and to terrify them for their lives if they disagree".

It's very difficult to know how much real support he has even among the "upper echelons" let alone the Russian people.

One would hope that the upper echelons are waiting for their chance to do a little ‘defenestration’ of their own !!

@Cattenberg where you there to witness this? This comedian cosplaying as a president gets on my nerves with his constant demands.

No, but Clive Myrie met Zelensky in Kyiv not long after the Russian invasion. Later, Boris and other world leaders visited him in Ukraine.

Thatusernamewastaken · 09/02/2023 09:38

Some disgusting posts in this thread.
Ukraine had every right to flirt with joining NATO. You probably would if you had a mad dictator on your border. Russia had no right to invade a sovereign nation. The Russians have raised cities to the ground, murdered thousands of civilians, carried out acts of genocide in towns they have taken over and carried out countless war crimes. Of course Zelensky is going to court the west and any military support he can garner to take on a military power 10+ times their size.
Sorry if that inconveniences and worries some selfish people in the UK who can't see beyond the end of their nose.

Moxysright · 09/02/2023 09:39

I don’t get it either OP. Feels off to me.

MasterBeth · 09/02/2023 09:41

We rightly venerate those people who fought in the Second World War to protect Britain from invasion from a foreign power. Zelensky represenst those who are doing just the same in Ukraine today.

100% agree

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 09/02/2023 09:51

The people who think we shouldn't be assisting Ukraine aren't even doing selfishness right. It's unquestionably in our interests to arm the Ukrainians. We wouldn't be doing it otherwise. Luckily, in this instance our interests also happen to coincide with what is objectively the moral thing to do, so there aren't any difficult decisions to be made.

ExistenceOptional · 09/02/2023 09:55

I agree. Our government are not helping Ukraine out of love and compassion. It is self interest. Everyone knows if Putin wins Ukraine he will not stop there. We are defending ourselves.

And Russian propaganda and lies is a real thing. They get deleted by facebook who fact check more now. But MNHQ do not appear to do this. So MN is very attractive to them.

Agree. To be honest the amount of Russian propaganda that's allowed to stand on here is abhorrent. MNHQ should be doing more to tackle it.

BashirWithTheGoodBeard · 09/02/2023 10:08

Thats why its so important that we shout bot when we see one. Loudly.

AngeloMysterioso · 09/02/2023 10:15

Well he’s got more backbone than all of Downing St put together, I’ll say that for him.

headstone · 09/02/2023 10:17

No chance that Russia would ever attack Poland or a NATO country. Imo it would have been better all round if Ukraine had had a pro Russia president instead of Zellinsky, so many lives would have been saved by now. Escalation will just lead to a destroyed Ukraine and more deaths.

Sartre · 09/02/2023 10:22

I think siding with Ukraine is being on the right side of history personally. Russia have illegally invaded another country, not for the first time in recent history and we couldn’t all just stand by and allow that to happen again. Ukraine have fought really hard and it is honourable, they definitely wouldn’t have been able to without help from other countries though especially not for a year. Saying we shouldn’t help Ukraine is akin to saying we shouldn’t have helped Jews become liberated in the 40s imo.

I reported really obvious lies but they do not get deleted.
All I can say is do not use MN as a source of information about Ukraine.

So one should just let Russia take a whole other country and make it his own even though that’s against the will of the nation?

ExistenceOptional · 09/02/2023 10:27

@headstone Finland and Sweden are seriously worried that they would be invaded next and have applied to join NATO as a result. Ukraine had also been worried about this before the invasion and and sought to join NATO but been turned down.
Putin has ambitions to invade and extend Russian control and has been explicit in this. And lots of other countries believe him.
We need to stop his expansion. If he is defeated in Ukraine other expansion plans will be shelved.

ellyeth · 09/02/2023 10:31

Writing everybody, who expresses views that are disagreeable to you, as Russian infiltrators/bots, etc. is no doubt the sort of thing that Putin's officials and supporters are doing in Russia. Propaganda will, of course, be found on both "sides".

It is possible for someone to genuinely have doubts about the mainstream narrative and the wisdom of supplying more and more arms, which can only lead to more and more death and misery.

I recall that when we invaded Iraq the media reportage was, like now, almost wholly supportive of the invasion, and every news broadcast was introduced by music that was obviously meant to be both stirring and conveying a sense of urgency. It was only later that questioning voices were not depicted as traitorous/unhinged.

I am not a bot. I am in my 70's and a grandmother.
