WIBU to be annoyed in this cafe?

Hoppinggreen · 06/02/2023 18:42

Went for lunch today at a local cafe. I was paying as a treat for my friend. Bill was about £30.
When I went to pay the person on the till made a mistake and over charged me by £10. It was actually a lot more complicated as she mixed up my bill with someone else then tried to add on someone’s takeaway but that was basically it.
After a lot of discussion between 2 staff members they said the only thing they could do was refund and charge me again. No problem I said.
So they did the refund and I said it hadn’t appeared back on my banking app to be told that I had to wait up to 10 days to get it. I was then expected to pay again.
I (calmly) said that I wasn’t happy about that as I would have paid £70 for a £30 lunch until the refund arrived. I was told there was no other alternative. I said again that I didn’t think this was reasonable. The staff member who made the mistake kept apologising and I said that it was a simple mistake and everyone made them so she really didn’t need to be upset about it. The other staff member said that I just needed to pay again and if I hadn’t received it in 10 days to call in.
There was a queue at this point so I said fine but I wasn’t happy about it. The staff member then told me that I had “upset” her colleague and was very short with me. I said again that I didn’t blame her for a simple mistake, it was the lack of resolution I was annoyed at. I did not raise my voice at any point and was very calm and measured. We left and I could hear the staff member telling her colleague she could come out now (she had vanished into the back as apparently she was too upset to deal with me) since I had gone. I left feeling as if I had done something wrong, honestly happy to be told I did
Was I unreasonable being annoyed at this? It won’t cause me any issue financially but I’m a bit miffed at being £40 out of pocket due to their mistake for up to 10 days. It might come earlier I know

I had to wait 3 days for a £5 refund from Starbucks. Not really sure how get cab do it any quicker.

ReamsOfCheese · 06/02/2023 18:45

Staff member was being a wet blanket. What if you hadn't had £70 available on your card for this debacle? They should have just done some thinking and refunded the £10. There HAD to be a way to sort it that wouldn't take 10 days.

DestinysGrandchild · 06/02/2023 18:46

Refunds never happen straight away. But she was being ridiculous hiding out the back. It wasn't your fault.

AllOfThemWitches · 06/02/2023 18:46

You were told there was no way of getting your money back immediately. Fair enough to be annoyed about it but standing there hoping they'll come up with a magical solution?

Mangogogogo · 06/02/2023 18:47

Yanbu I hate it when people cry and play the victim when everyone is just being normal and, to be fair, you had every right to be a bit angry anyway.

i probably would have told them I didn’t have enough money to pay again, but only cos I’ve been fleeced like this before. Never got the money back

Tinkerbyebye · 06/02/2023 18:47

I would have told them I didn’t have the extra money in my account and they can give me the £10 extra as cash from the till

DrMarciaFieldstone · 06/02/2023 18:47

Refunds are never instant. They should have just refunded you the difference

Smartiepants79 · 06/02/2023 18:48

You’re not wrong to be annoyed but I think this is how the system works.
It’s probably not something the ordinary person behind the till can do anything about. Maybe not even something the manager can do anything about.
I’ve never noticed it happening to me but I have heard tales of even very large corporations such as Asda working exactly the same way.

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/02/2023 18:49

You could have asked them to give you cash? Or are they cashless? If so not much to do, other than write to the owner and ask them to do you a direct bank transfer if you need it quicker.

The staff were being a bit wet, wouldn’t worry about that.

It didn’t need to be magical, it needed them to open the till and give me £10

I'd be annoyed but also understand. This is the issue now with automated services, I'm sure this was the only resolution they had so a bit unfair to take it out on them.

Why didn’t they tell you the amount before they took your payment? Usually either they tell you or it shows up on either the till or the reader so that the customer knows before they pay if there’s an issue, that’s a bit dodgy if they’re just taking money off people’s cards without them knowing how much it is…

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 06/02/2023 18:54

I would have calmly and politely refused their solution. Why on earth should you be financially penalised for their mistake?! I’d have continually reiterated that I was calm and understood but I needed my £10 back.

PoppyFleur · 06/02/2023 18:56

YANBU to be annoyed, yes mistakes do happen and no, the cafe can’t control how quickly refunds appear in your account. However, they lacked grace in how they dealt with a matter that was of their own making. They then went on to compound it.

Customer’s are the lifeblood of any business, not an inconvenience. Sadly many businesses will learn this the hard way as the cost of living bites.

needanewnamechange · 06/02/2023 18:58

i don’t understand why you had to pay twice ?
so it was £30 but they charged you £40 in error instead of refunding you even waiting up to 10 days for the £10 refund they made you pay again ?!!
I’ve never heard this before you just refund the difference it’s not difficult.
I’m sorry but I absolutely wouldn’t have paid again I’d have walked out I’m not sure why anyone would pay again to get it back in 10 days absurd I’d never go back .

Lcb123 · 06/02/2023 19:00

They should have given you £10 from the till

Lcb123 · 06/02/2023 19:00

They should have given you £10 from the till

That’s what I thought but apparently that wasn’t possible.
Plus I was made to feel like a big meanie as the staff member was too upset to deal with me apparently- despite me telling her not to worry about it as we all make mistakes.

Danikm151 · 06/02/2023 19:02

A refund shouldn’t inconvenience a customer like that.

the staff member was probably more upset at her mistake rather than you

GoodChat · 06/02/2023 19:05

You agreed to their solution, then changed your mind when they refunded you.

They can't just give you money out of the till because things won't match up.

If you upset someone to the point of them hiding from you, I don't think you were as polite as you're suggesting.

leithreas · 06/02/2023 19:08

I think it was a bit strange that you expected the refund to appear straight away in your bank, that isn't something that happens here is Ireland is that standard in the UK? You happily agreed to the refund in the first place, the staff would have assumed that you know that refunds are not instant(unless they usually are in the UK) when you agreed to it. You then decided the refund wasn't a good idea after it had already been done, at that point there was little they could do other than let you away without paying at all. Taking a tenner out of the til or cakes worth a tenner were useless at that point because they had no money from you.

The point to say actually no that isn't going to work for me was the point where you said 'no problem'

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 06/02/2023 19:08

I’d have walked out. If they thought I could wait ten days for my money, I’d happily tell them they shouldn’t mind waiting as long for theirs. As for this mawkish “But everybody makes mistaaaaakes” whining, they need to get a grip and put them right without the histrionics.

Gymmum82 · 06/02/2023 19:09

I’d have said I don’t have the money to pay again. Then they’d have to come up with another solution

OneTC · 06/02/2023 19:09

Was it a chain?

Not being able to refund you the difference is nuts

Maybe the waitress should have just got it right in the first place instead of crying that the OP wasn’t nice enough about it. Who’s the customer here?
