Beauty students asked to strip in front of trans rapist at college AFTER sex attacks

My AIBU title taken from this news article:

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/beauty-students-asked-strip-front-29063499

This whole 'Isla Bryson' cluster-fuck has me angrier than I can describe.

These girls had to accept and trust this vile individual in their beauty course on the basis of Isla's claim to be a woman, nothing more. They even tolerated abuse from Isla.

They were not told this individual was facing charges of rape. The college claim they didn't know either. Because 'Isla' said he was a women, these young women felt they had no choice but to strip to virtually naked in front of him. Failing to do so would be 'bigoted'.

But he also happens to be a serial rapist. Young women, some possibly aged 16 or so, stripping to virtually naked while a serial rapist watches. If this was my daughter I would be going mad.

Where is the safeguarding?

AIBU to feel viscerally angry with all our politicians about this?

Strength in numbers. If everyone joined together next time, and say left the beauty course, they would have to address the issue

Right on the whole DBS thing a few points.

In Scotland we don't have the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) we have Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) which is broadly the same thing.

16-18 year olds are in a special category when it comes to police record checking. PVG/DBS define anyone under the age of 18 as a "child", but also recognise that people under 18 are not all in school full-time. Some are working full time, some are doing apprenticeships, others have part time jobs. If a 16 or 17 year old has a part time job at McDonalds, the rest of the staff members or the managers do NOT require a police check.

Young people who are 16 or 17 and who are at college/University do not require a DBS/PVG check to start their course. Older, mature students do not require a PVG check to sit in a classroom with younger students as this does not constitute "regulated activity" as per the legal definition. This does not apply to people aged 16/17 who are applying for courses like nursing, teaching, physiotherapy. Teachers in colleges will be expected to have DBS/pVG checks if they are dealing with students under 18 as this IS regulated activity.

Beauty therapy, hairdressing, nails etc is NOT regulated activity and therefore students enrolling on these sorts of courses - irrespective of age - cannot be asked for a standard/enhanced check.

All colleges can do legally would be to ask every student to have a basic level DBS/PVG check which will disclose current unspent convictions and cautions only. Many educational establishments and especially colleges do no do this, there has been a genera move away from asking about unspent convictions as it is felt that it puts people off "bettering themselves" for want of a better expression through fear of having to disclose a teenage offence.

Besides, a basic DBS/PVG will only show convictions and cautions, and at that stage Bryson/Graham had not been convicted.

Yes it's a shit show and yes it has put those 16/17 year old girls in a horrendous situation. But I don't think legally anything has been done incorrectly. What of course SHOULD have been happening is that the girls should have been speaking up and refusing to change or strip to their knickers in front of "Annie" but they were clearly too scared of being branded nasty transphobes. This is a clear loophole in the legislation.

They shouldn't have to do this.

The man shouldn't be allowed on the course in the first place.

The other problem is that women have been scared into believing that they are the bigots if they don't pretend they are really seeing a woman. To quote Orwell from JKR's tweet of earlier today:

The whole “male rapist turns female to exploit female only prisons” is such a horrid loophole. This must be addressed in full so a legal precedent is set on how this farce will be managed in the future.

That college needs to open a full investigation on how this rapist passed their vetting checks and was permitted to watch naked teens/young adults. You really can’t make this up, the rapist in question is clearly persistent in finding loopholes.

No man can turn female.

But if the law allows men to self ID as women then how can they say that 'any man is a woman because he says so except for rapists?'. It just doesn't work if it is based on Self ID.

No man who IDs as a woman should be in the female prison estate.

No man who IDs as a woman should be on a female (single sex) college course.

If he is denied access to the women's prison, I wonder how long it will be before he stops wearing pink clothes "detransitions".

I suspect when he realises the jig is up, it won't be very long.

My first thoughts when I heard he’d been moved to a male prison too

RichardBarrister · 27/01/2023 18:16

Exactly. The nationwide removal of safeguarding- single sex spaces, girls ability to set boundaries of privacy from the opposite sex is all designed to benefit one type of person. The sort of men who relish making women feel uncomfortable and worse.

The prison services and police forces of Scotland and England/Wales introduced a clear incentive for male criminals to claim to be female. Some get let off a prison sentence altogether, some get a lighter sentence. All get the opportunity to request a women’s prison, some have it granted. Being a murderer, rapist or paedophile does not prevent entry to a women’s prison.

We have effectively lost single sex spaces, with tearful girls in TikTok recounting their horrible experiences in Primark/other retailers of being leered at by men in the mixed sex changing rooms that they often weren’t aware were mixed sex.

Headteachers all over the country are enthusiastically ripping out the single sex toilets and replacing them with mixed sex cubicles to the distress of the girls now forced to share with teenage boys.

Women and girls are terrified to speak out for fear of being ‘unkind’, something we have been conditioned to avoid at all costs, even our own comfort of safety.

We need to say NO MORE!! We need to keep shouting about this until everyone has confidence to exercise our freedom of speech and set our own boundaries.

No more men in women’s spaces.

I am absolutely not defending the rapist.

But there are no vetting checks to be accepted onto a college course. Whether you are studying geography, beauty therapy or bricklaying.

The only college courses which require a police check are those which fall into the definition of regulated activity - sports coaching, physiotherapy, midwifery, teaching.

Now there's a separate discussion to be had about the sort of society we've created which has led to an atmosphere were 16/17 year old girls and their parents feel that they cannot call out the obvious - that there is a man in their beauty therapy class and they are expected to pretend it is a woman called Annie who is harmless and just being "her true self".

Yes, this is a cumulative result of years and years and years of relentlessly attacking any woman who refused to accept that 'TWAW' or dared to ever question any of the tenets of genderism.

It has to go. All of it.

Nobody is 'born in the wrong body'.
Nobody can ever change sex.
Wear what you want. Marry who you want. But men can stay out of women's spaces, every one of them.

itswednesdayy · 27/01/2023 18:25

@HufflepuffRavenclaw if the course involves dealing with naked people, the college should change their policy to require a check. Or just remove the nudity aspect completely. Even basic courses the job centre provide can require a DBS as part of the eligibility criteria.

heathspeedwell · 27/01/2023 18:30

For decades we have known that 99% of sex crimes are committed by men. If a college course has always just had female people on it then nobody would predict that a rapist is going to come along and claim he is female.

The whole problem is that we have recently been brainwashed to pretend that men who identify as women behave in a different way to other men.

Sadly, all the evidence suggests that men who identify as women behave like other men.

HufflepuffRavenclaw · 27/01/2023 18:31

No they can't. Because "regulated activity" is defined in law and the college cannot make up its own definition.

Beauty therapists do not need a DBS check. Therefore students of beauty therapy do not need a DBS check. Lots of beauty therapists who do hair/make-up/facials and so on never see a naked person. However, if you ARE using the services of a therapist for spray tanning or intimate waxing, it's wise to be aware that you have no way of knowing the history of the therapist, whatever their sex.

And a basic DBS/PVG check is just unspent convictions - if you have not been convicted of anything, even if you've been charged with a court case pending, your certificate is clean.

This isn't a "college failing to do the checks" problem. This is a "society has made it unacceptable to question a man's motives because he says he's a woman" problem.

Shifting this into a DBS/PVG failure scenario is diverting attention from the real issue.

itswednesdayy · 27/01/2023 18:39

The college needs a system to flag people who are potentially violent. Do they not ask about arrests/criminal record on the application form before enrolment?

I work in a government department, we have a system in place that allows for a marker that states “not to be around lone women” or “must be dealt with by males only” etc. From there, we would assess the person’s suitability when allowing them to interact with our premises or colleagues/public/stakeholders etc.

This person may even be in breach of their bail conditions by joining such a course.

heathspeedwell · 27/01/2023 18:40

I think it's pretty close to victim blaming to try to suggest the college is at fault for not knowing that he had been charged with two counts of rape. I'm sure all the staff who had to work with him had a lot of sleepless nights wondering how on earth to deal with him without losing their jobs.

It's also unfair to blame the students for choosing a course that inevitably involves states of undress. It's impossible to wax the bikini line of a fully-dressed woman.

heathspeedwell · 27/01/2023 18:42

Also even if the application form asks trainee beauticians if they had previous arrests for sex crimes, it's not like sexual predators are known for their honesty and truthfulness.

Sugarfree23 · 27/01/2023 18:43

There are two issues the course should be single sex not gender And innocent until proven.

The 2/3 years it's taking for cases to come to court is 2/3 years people are able to commit further offences

Apologies no share token for the times article but here it is reported in the Scottish press.

This delightful individual is a pedophile who sexually assaulted young girls in the women's toilets in Morrisons.

He then beat up a male inmate in the male prison after which his gender was 'recognised' and he was moved to the female prison estate!

Show's what women are worth! He gives a male inmate a head injury and get's transferred to a women's prison.

NO. The college needs a system where it can stop males from joining single sex courses.

The fact that this is a rapist is what has made it newsworthy.

Young women and girls should not be made uncomfortable by ANY male being present when they are partially naked.

You are part of the problem for saying that only rapists should be banned when it is ALL MALES that should be out of single sex spaces.

heathspeedwell · 27/01/2023 18:57

Given that so few rapists are currently charged, let alone convicted, the only system to 'flag people who are potentially violent' would be to segregate beautician courses by sex, not gender.

Male people commit around 99% of sex crimes.
