to wonder if a 5’7 female is ‘big’

I’m a 5’7 and a half female, in your completely honest opinion do you think I’m tall or average height. I feel massive and huge next to every other girl, don’t wear heels ever and hate it.
im just under 9st and feel I just look like this absolute giant.
I never am called tall by anyone but believe I am.
In your opinion is 5’7-5’8 ‘really tall’ for a female

It's not really tall in my opinion.

I'm 5ft 6 and used to always wear high heels (probably why I've got dodgy feet now) 😁

Embrace your height and wear it with pride.

Blankedot · 07/01/2023 22:19

I'm 50 and 5ft 8 and really like this height, it's tallish, I wear heels sometimes, don't feel huge or self conscious at all. I have female relative and a friend over 6ft and it doesn't bother them in the least.

PiccalilliPops · 07/01/2023 22:21

I’m same height has you OP and mid 40’s. A little above average for my age group perhaps especially with heels but feel perfectly normal. Don’t know what you’re on about.

Younger people are definitely getting taller.

moonmoon123 · 08/01/2023 00:12

Thank you all, so basically I have serious confidence issues that’s what I’m taking from your responses!
Im a full female btw but did laugh at my mistake hahah

No it’s not tall I’m 6ft 6ins and used to live with a girlfriend who was 6ft 8ins tall!

percypal · 08/01/2023 00:16

I think it’s tall in that it’s not short so people will say I’m tall at 5 foot 7. In the grand scheme of things I’m not tall but when there are plenty people around who are much shorter than that then it does seem tall.

Anon6713 · 08/01/2023 00:16

My best friend is 5’8 and I’m almost 5’5 and I’ve never even noticed it. My bf is 6’1ish and I have to really look up at him tho

Manasprey · 08/01/2023 00:18

Where are all the tall men? Where I live they're all short arsenal. 5'9 (ok, 6ft in heels)is some kind of magical creature: "ooh, aren't you tall?" No, you're just short for a man.

RobertaFirmino · 08/01/2023 02:49

I'm the same height and weight as you OP but am bony & lanky rather than slim and willowy. Stupidly long arms. I'm 46 and 30 years ago I was considered tall. The young women of today seem to tower over me though.

LearnerCook · 08/01/2023 02:57

I'm the same height and feel very tall.

I've always been taller than most of my colleagues and friends, even some men. I hate it; I'd love to be petite.

knitnerd90 · 08/01/2023 03:07

5'9", and I definitely feel taller than average but not exceptionally so... unless I'm around my relatives, where I'm taller than not only the women but most of the men. As a teen I had 5 foot tall aunties exclaiming about my height.

TheTeenageYears · 08/01/2023 03:41

Tall but not a giant and very unlikely to stick out at that height unless you are surrounded by much shorter people. At 9st you can be no more than a UK size 10 so also wouldn't describe you as big.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 08/01/2023 05:09

I'm 5 foot 11, so to me, you're short

TerfOnATrain · 08/01/2023 05:15

I’m 5’4” and feel very average
size 6 feet, again they feel very average

I wouldn’t say 5’7” is big at all, but it is taller than average for a British woman, if that’s what you are.

MrsMurphyIWish · 08/01/2023 05:33

I’m 5’ 7” and don’t consider myself tall but maybe it’s the company we keep? My husband is 6’ 2” and I’m actually the shortest of my friends. I’ve always wanted to be taller! The women in DH’s family are short and DD takes after them - her height predictor is 5’ 2” for adulthood. She hates being short!

LemonTreeSkies · 08/01/2023 06:24

Also 5’ 4” and jealous.
But then I married a shortarse so I guess it all worked out 😁😁

ChampagneLassie · 08/01/2023 06:34

You can't be serious. national stats average is 5'3. I know a few women over 6 and they def seem and feel tall. It's all relative to who you're mixing with though.

5ft 7 is probably only marginally over average in the uk for younger women.

Im 5ft 7 and most friends are similar.

MilkyYay · 08/01/2023 06:59

That average takes into account the huge older population in the UK who are shorter, and some ethnic minority groups who tend shorter too. Younger women are quite a bit taller - plenty of teen girls at 5ft 10 & up.

If op is a young, white or black woman, 5ft 7 is average.

tirednewmumm · 08/01/2023 07:03

What?! I think you might need some help with dysmorphia im a 5"7 woman and I've never felt big. Im slightly on the taller side but not to the point people comment or have been weird about it. I do a lot of sport and have a muscular figure and weigh more than you and still feel feminine

The older teenage girls at DD's school are mainly tiny, I'm tall and feel like a heffalump when I'm in there. I volunteer with sixth formers too and tall girls are the exception. There certainly aren't plenty of teens 5'10'" and up.

I would say average height.

Presumably that’s because the ONS is using a mean average. I’ve never been measured for official records and if people around you are family and perhaps genetically a bit taller or you’re younger etc. it’s not unreasonable for people to say that at all.
