to wonder if a 5’7 female is ‘big’

I’m a 5’7 and a half female, in your completely honest opinion do you think I’m tall or average height. I feel massive and huge next to every other girl, don’t wear heels ever and hate it.
im just under 9st and feel I just look like this absolute giant.
I never am called tall by anyone but believe I am.
In your opinion is 5’7-5’8 ‘really tall’ for a female

I love a tall woman! Take pride in your tallness wear high heels if you like! The higher the better!

Society wants women small so we are vulnerable.

StamppotAndGravy · 08/01/2023 08:04

I'm 5'6. Unfortunately it depends where you are. I grew up in a poor city and spent my teens feeling like a clumping giant. I then went to a much richer city for university where it was about average. I'm now living in a rich city in the Netherlands where I'm a midget and have to wear heels to see over counters or cashpoint screens and I can buy children's clothing (if I go easy on the cake!)

It's taller than average, going in it being 5'4" but not hugely tall. My 13yo is 5'7" and she's s fair bit taller than me but I don't think she looks like a giant, in fact I think it's a nice height.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/01/2023 08:16

I’m 5’ 7” and have never felt over-tall or wished to be shorter. Rather the reverse.

A friend’s dd is 5’ 11” - if you were her height I might think you had a point but she always looks fabulously elegant.

BTW I wondered at first about ‘half female’, too! OP!

StarCourt · 08/01/2023 08:16

im 5 ft 9 and def dont feel giant

SlagathaChristie · 08/01/2023 08:18

You're a lovely height and sound quite slim too. You're lucky! I'm 5'4 and would love to be a few inches taller (and a stone lighter too). I guess the grass is always greener.

HarlanPepper · 08/01/2023 08:18

I'm 5 foot 9, I do feel taller than average but not giant sized. I like being tall.

SunsetGoldenGlow · 08/01/2023 08:20

I’m 5’7 and don’t feel tall, but then I live with a giant DH who is 6’5 & DS who is now almost 6’, so in our house I’m tiny! 😆

Clarinet1 · 08/01/2023 08:21

Well leaving aside terms like “average”, I would say you are “quite tall” but not “incredibly tall”. I can think of quite a few women I see regularly (friends, leisure activities, work) who are taller, more like 5’ 10”- 6’. We are all unique and should appreciate that! Also, your weigh and height sound in proportion.

Mummadeze · 08/01/2023 08:21

I am 5 foot 7 and taller than my closest friends but don’t care or feel big. Think your question is quite weird actually!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/01/2023 08:28

‘Big’ is often a polite way of saying ‘fat’ BTW OP, so I did wonder what you meant at first. MN has a ‘Big, slim, whatever…’ thread - evidently couldn’t bring themselves to use the F word.

It's called Big/slim/whatever weightloss club and your post is bit twatty because it's actually nice supportive place.

Everyone with IQ over room temp got that "is 5ft7 big" meant tall. But it wouldn't be MN if someone didn't moan about fat, eh

LadyWithLapdog · 08/01/2023 10:16

Unless you’re standing straight in a line for a photo, a few centimetres difference aren’t even noticeable. When you’re walking, sitting, moving in a room etc.

It's average: most would not remark on a 5'7 person unless they are well below average height... you wouldn't turn your head at a 5'7 person thinking that's so tall.

That’s small in our family where all female relatives are 5’ 10 - 6’ 1 and all very proud of it!

jcyclops · 08/01/2023 15:37

Average height of UK woman born 1996 is 5'4.75"
This is an increase of 1" over women born 1946.
A woman 5'7.5" is 83.3 percentile ie. 16.7% (1 in 6) are taller.
Height distribution:

to wonder if a 5’7 female is ‘big’
Silverpining · 08/01/2023 16:17

Factually yes that’s big, average in the UK is 5ft 4.

Cuppasoupmonster · 08/01/2023 16:19

Big to me means fat, or tall and very broad. If you’re average weight/slim, no you’re not ‘big’ regardless of height.

Florenz · 08/01/2023 16:22

5'7 is not particularly tall, it might be an inch or so above average. I would say 5'10 and above is tall for a woman.

Eatentoomanyroses · 08/01/2023 16:22

no it’s pretty average. I’m 5 ft 9.5. I think it all matters less as you get older. I’m more comfortable with it now in my thirties than I was as a teen and in my twenties.

HashBrownandBeans · 08/01/2023 16:23

I’m 6ft1 and twice your weight almost 😅 I am definitely giant

jennakitt · 08/01/2023 16:23

The average height for a woman in the UK is, I believe, 5ft 4. So at nearly 5ft 8 you're a few inches above average height.

5ft 7 was minimum model agency acceptance height, if that's still the same now.

I'd say you were tall. Very tall, for a woman, in my opinion, is 5ft 10 and above.
