To not be able to stop thinking about the Idaho murder case

Is anyone else following this case? It’s absolutely horrible and has really scared me to the point of locking my bedroom door when I sleep every night! The more that comes out in the news, the more bizarre and confusing the case seems to get too. So scary to think what people are capable of 😞

Because these two lots of people were asleep. It’s easy to stab them to death like that.

From the information released it seems as though a few of the housemates were actually awake. 😔

Tilllly · 07/01/2023 16:27

And why those 4 and not the other two?

And why did the call say unconscious person? Not my 4 roommates have been stabbed?

So much about this doesn’t add up. Why leave 2 eye witnesses?

No doubt there’s more to come out regarding the 2 survivors.

Maybe some of the housemates were awake but not the victims? Who was the delivery for? If it was for the victims, then yes, some of them might have been awake to receive it.
Was there a security camera in/on the house? Did it record anything?

There could be several reasons

A) he explicitly wasn't interested in them. He was there for the others

B) he didn't know they were there

C) he was injured/weapon broke

D) he thought police were on their way.

The delivery was for one of the victims. She received it at 4am. She was on tik tok still at 4.12. He was on camera fleeing at 4.20am

Unfortunately from what has been released it does seem like the victims were awake. 😥

It’s horrific to think they were just doing normal stuff minutes before it happened and sinister thinking he could have been watching them or the house at least for months . In a way it would have been easier to understand if it was a crime of passion by an ex or someone connected to one of them but what seems to have happened is just so scary and like something from a nightmare .
i feel so sorry for the surviving roommates and hope they are getting good support , their lives will never be the same again after this .

Why are you scared? You don’t live in Idaho US, do you? I know there is crime elsewhere too but how does this case exactly impact your day-to-day life? Based on this case, all other crimes could potentially affect you, and there’s so many of them, the question is: are you gonna get upset and scared every time something like this happens in far-off places in the world?
I don’t mean offence with this, I’m just genuinely curious.

My thought when I saw the thread title was why Idaho? Why follow the US? Why not this one, that has been keeping me awake? www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-64038743

Anyone who doesn’t know what some men are capable of lives on another planet.

FrostyBits · 07/01/2023 17:18

@RosaGallica that is horrific. All of it, but the fact he twice raped his step daughter before her murder. 😢😢

There are indeed monsters walking amongst us.

It’s really awful. The information that has come out of the affidavit is awful. The flatmate that opened her door and saw him apparently heard her flatmate crying and a man say “it’s ok, I’m going to help you” 😟 And that he had driven by the house several times since August. It’s just awful.

This part is really confusing to me. Did the flat mate just go back to sleep after locking her door? Not even did she not contact police, did she not even try to ring another flatmate to ask what was happening?

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 07/01/2023 17:21

Monoprix · 07/01/2023 16:25

I am not sure the house was broken into. Americans don’t tend to lock their main entrance doors. You frequently see in films how random people just go into someone’s house and the main entrance in unlocked. They probably lock their doors in Downtown Detroit or the Bronx but rural Americans don’t seem to give a shit about locking doors.

So all your knowledge of how Americans "tend" to do things is learned from films? Should I start using films to judge how British people tend to behave?
You think only people in "Downtown Detroit" and "The Bronx" lock their doors?
You're hilarious (and I do wonder why you chose those two locations, hmmm)

NotAnotherBathBomb · 07/01/2023 17:21

FartOutLoudDay · 07/01/2023 15:00

Based on what I’ve read today, I don’t think it was random. Either he had already met or was aware of some of the female occupants before attacking them.

I've been listening to a podcast that is following this. A search of his phone record showed him to be in the area I think it was 14 times in the period leading up to the murders. So he was definitely staking out the place.

In the circumstances I would be scared shitless and not want to risk making a peep by getting my phone out. I’d be hiding under the bed frozen in fear. Plenty of people go into shock and freeze out of trauma when something horrifying happens: we’d all like to think we’d be heroic and gung-ho but the reality is fear can be totally paralysing.

Me too I have been following it a lot. Its absolutely horrifying.

But the whole case has just been so bizarre and so many aspects of it that don't seem to make sense (the survivors seeing the intruder and not calling 911 for 6 hours, the accused coming from such a seemingly normal family etc)...Its complex and horrifying.

Plenty of psychopaths come from normal families, so I'm not sure why that would seem strange

Ravenrobin309 · 07/01/2023 17:30

@RosaGallica

Both cases are horrendous. I think the idaho one was more publicised because it was over a month long man hunt.
Just because people are taking about this case doesn't make that one less horrific. It is indeed very scary what men are capable of.
It doesn't matter what country it's in people can be affected by it.

No doubt there’s more to come out regarding the 2 survivors.

I think the house had 2 entrances, it was built on the side of a hill and the survivors were on the bottom floor. I read it was a neighbour who phoned 911 and said someone was unconscious on the ground outside the house.

Spiderboy · 07/01/2023 17:36

I have unhealthily obsessed and stepped back here it is on mumsnet 🙈 I feel horrific for all the families involved. The poor eye witness too, I can’t imagine how she is feeling.

Aurorabored · 07/01/2023 17:37

The crime is horrible. The way ‘normal’ people trawl over the details like ghouls and start up conspiracy theories about the surviving victims is abhorrent. These are real people who died; real people who survived a horrific event. It’s not a tv show laid on for your entertainment.

I agree. It's Fight, Flight or Freeze but Freeze is the least known reaction. Some people go into Freeze mode and can do nothing. A friend of mine was in a gun hold up in a bank and said no one could get her up off the floor for about three hours afterwards. She just had to keep lying there, long after the gunmen had gone.

It's awful and the vitriol against one of the surviving room mates is awful

Where are you reading this leve of detail? I can only find very basic outlines which give no information on the killer or the victims or survivors.

Do they, @AreOttersJustWetCats ? I genuinely didn't know this. I thought all violent psychopaths had some level of trauma or brutality in their family background. I've never read of one who didn't.

FangedFrisbee · 07/01/2023 17:57

@WinterFoxes well I found some good threads on Reddit and tattle but also TikTok. However they released the 19 page affidavit a couple of days ago.
