To think 240g of mince isn’t enough for 2 people?

Got a hello fresh delivery today and one of the recipes (classic cottage pie) was delivered with the smallest amount of mince I’ve ever seen. It is palm sized! Now I know theres other veggies and potatoes in it, but is this not slightly ridiculous? It’s about 4 mouthfuls of meat!

Am I just exceptionally greedy 😂

240g is plenty for two.

Praying4Memory · 04/01/2023 16:51

We've always done around 100-125g per person so that sounds the right size to me.

purser25 · 04/01/2023 16:51

If I am catering I saw 4 oz of mince per person so about right

SofiaSoFar · 04/01/2023 16:51

I'd have thought it was fine?

A 'normal' pack of mince - 400/500g is enough for a meal for 4 people, isn't it?

Rainbowshit · 04/01/2023 16:52

That's absolutely plenty.

GreyCarpet · 04/01/2023 16:52

I do that much minced beef for 2.

LeafHunter · 04/01/2023 16:52

Google suggests a portion is 125g pp but this can be halved if other things are added.

Shesasuperfreak · 04/01/2023 16:52

Weigh it.
It shouldn't be a handful if its half a package supermarket size.

SnowyKitty · 04/01/2023 16:53

I thought general guidance was 100g per person for protein. I would use a 500g pack of mince for 4 and I am not known for my under catering.

TangledWebOfDeception · 04/01/2023 16:53

It is actually plenty - when it comes to nutritional needs 100g protein per meal is a good amount for an adult.
In real terms, of course, it looks/feels like very little because many people eat way more than that per person, per meal.

I do actually use about 150g per person as a rough guide for things like pasta sauces, cottage pie, etc.

Fiji10 · 04/01/2023 16:53

When I cook for my family of 4 (3 adults, 1 teen), I generally buy 400g of mince. So 240g for 2 people seems perfectly fine? It'll be bulked up with sides and salads.

HaddawayAndShite · 04/01/2023 16:53

A 500g pack would make 4-6 portions here. So that sounds right.

Pothoswithasparkle · 04/01/2023 16:53

Half of it will evaporate so no.
If it was good quality then maybe, but I would go to 300g for 2.

VariationsonaTheme · 04/01/2023 16:53

Yes, I use the smaller (usually 250g) packs for 2, 500 for 4.

OlleOskiFelle · 04/01/2023 16:53

I do an ounce for my family of four, plenty unless you are a glutton.
One mashed new potato for the topping obvs

ApolloandDaphne · 04/01/2023 16:54

That's is the right amount for 2 people. I use 500g for 4.

Ostryga · 04/01/2023 16:54

Gosh maybe I am just very greedy then! It looks tiny.

To be fair I do use a standard pack of mince for 2 adults and a 6 year old with no leftovers so that may be where I’m going wrong.

Unicorn2022 · 04/01/2023 16:54

It's not a lot of meat but I tend to identify as a family of four when it comes to portion sizes.

EmmaDilemma5 · 04/01/2023 16:54

There's more to life than meat. If the recipe calls for vegetables in addition, and the overall meal is tasty and plentiful, what's the issue?

sparklefarts · 04/01/2023 16:54

I always look at hello fresh and think it'll never be enough. But it always is. Perfectly full without wing stuffed after

Was a portion control eye opener for me. Always have a week or two of hello fresh to her me back on track whent portions start to get out of control again

SomethingOriginal2 · 04/01/2023 16:54

That's why I stopped getting hello fresh. The veg portions are always tiny too.

ILoveeCakes · 04/01/2023 16:54

Who'd have thought that a modern, trendy US company would be out to promote the current agenda of weaning people off meat........

Claudia84 · 04/01/2023 16:55

I think that's fine for two. But hello fresh do annoy me for the portion sizes of each part. Ie loads of rice but only one veg portion for an entire meal.

This is an extremely good point! I think I may have lost sight of normal portion sizes.

I usually buy a 500g pack of mince to make a cottage or shepherds pie for 4 adults so that doesn't sound far out.
