To think 240g of mince isn’t enough for 2 people?

Got a hello fresh delivery today and one of the recipes (classic cottage pie) was delivered with the smallest amount of mince I’ve ever seen. It is palm sized! Now I know theres other veggies and potatoes in it, but is this not slightly ridiculous? It’s about 4 mouthfuls of meat!

Am I just exceptionally greedy 😂

This is why I cancelled Hello Fresh, the meals were never big enough, but in their defence I only really eat one main meal a day so I want it to be massive Grin

Actually this is a really good point.

I only eat very lightly during the day, and DP is the same. So our evening meal tends to be big and hearty. If I had a bigger lunch then maybe I'd feel differently about dinner portions. I know if I ever happen to eat well at lunchtime I don't want much for dinner.

There are practical reasons why eating a bigger lunch just wouldn't work for us. But it does mean that evening dinners are larger.

Destiny123 · 04/01/2023 18:04

My partner says the same I always have to add extra meat or get told he's being starved. Have already been to the meals are designed for rabbits lol (veg dodger)

Hidingawaytoday · 04/01/2023 18:07

I usually buy 500g which makes 4 adult meals and 2 toddler meals (and I'm definitely not owe if those mumsnet competitive undereaters). I do add 2 onions, 2 tins of tomatoes, plus other veg too that though.

watchfulwishes · 04/01/2023 18:08

100g of minced beef is around 250 calories, so you couldn't really double it without starting to get into large amounts of calories on one aspect of the meal.

450g mince is for 4 people, that is why a quarterpounder was a standard burger size.

Mentalpiece · 04/01/2023 18:09

You could do what I do OP and bulk it out with a slack handful of porridge oats towards the end of cooking.
You can't taste them but it makes the mince go further.

Parky04 · 04/01/2023 18:11

500g for two in our house!

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 04/01/2023 18:11

I would use 500g to make a pie or pasta sauce to serve 4 hungry people. So 240g sounds about right to serve 2?

Gosh maybe I am just very greedy then! It looks tiny.

To be fair I do use a standard pack of mince for 2 adults and a 6 year old with no leftovers so that may be where I’m going wrong.

This is about what I'd use to for a similar family size and sometimes just between two.

Diet2023 · 04/01/2023 18:13

Quite a varied response of how many grams of meat per person is deemed a portion.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 04/01/2023 18:14

We had shepherds pie last night made with a 500g pack of mince. It fed 2 adults and 2 children with leftovers so I think the weight is fine. It won't look like much though.

No. You’re not greedy OP.

Jesus. Who wants to be measuring out mince down to a 100 gms per person.

Only 20% fat mince is as high in calories as 250 per 100g. I use 5% fat mince and it's half that.

That said this thread is peak Mumsnet 😂

Sgtmajormummy · 04/01/2023 18:14

I’ve just looked at the recipe cards and the recipes ranged from 450 calories to over 700 per portion!

neighboursmustliveon · 04/01/2023 18:15

It's not quite the same but I use a 300g quorn mince for a family of 4. It doesn't reduce down as much as mince. If I use a 500g pack there are tons of left overs.

If my husband is making a meat version of something for him and DS then he will use 250g for them (half a pack).

MajorCarolDanvers · 04/01/2023 18:15

Definitely enough for 2.

Your normal portion sizes are too big if you don't think so.

Add more veg if you feel you need more food.

I actually found it was hard to get anything meat based with Hello Fresh. They kept offering endless vegetarian options which is fine, I do like halloumi, but there were weeks where it was a struggle to find anything meat based Confused

I do an ounce for my family of four, plenty unless you are a glutton.
One mashed new potato for the topping obvs

Just had to let you all see this again.
🤣
😉

It’s a cottage pie for 2. You cut it in half. How hard can it be?

throwaway2023 · 04/01/2023 18:23

I'm not a competitive undereater but I use 500g mince for 5 portions
That's with veg and pickled red cabbage on the side though

FleasNavidad · 04/01/2023 18:24

It wasn't funny the first time. There's no competitive under eating going on, which would be needed to make it funny Confused

But hello fresh and all these meal deal things are never good value. You are paying for brand, inefficient portion sizes, delivery, marketing and recipes as well as just food

And you still have to cook it!! What’s the point?!

Diet2023 · 04/01/2023 18:13

Quite a varied response of how many grams of meat per person is deemed a portion.

It varies mainly because people put different things with it.
Some people have less pasta, more ragu, less rice, more meat etc. So it's kind of pointless to compare just meat portion.

If you look at the jamie oliver recipe few posts back, look how much other stuff is there. Some people would put less and more meat.

"If you look at the jamie oliver recipe few posts back, look how much other stuff is there. Some people would put less and more meat."

Yes but that recipe feeds 6

Sceptre86 · 04/01/2023 18:26

It sounds about right especially if you are adding veg. I make a 500g pack of mince, with veg. It will feed 2 adults, 2 kids and there is usually one portion left for a kid to have the next day.
