To think 240g of mince isn’t enough for 2 people?

Got a hello fresh delivery today and one of the recipes (classic cottage pie) was delivered with the smallest amount of mince I’ve ever seen. It is palm sized! Now I know theres other veggies and potatoes in it, but is this not slightly ridiculous? It’s about 4 mouthfuls of meat!

Am I just exceptionally greedy 😂

10?! Surely that is mostly pasta and a spoon of sauce on top?

A 500g pack makes 2 portions of ragu here 😂

A 500g pack of mince for two is bonkers. A jar of Dolmio and 500g of mince is supposed to be for a family!

I am pretty sure I did see someone say seriously 12 portion from that

That's why I stopped getting hello fresh. The veg portions are always tiny too.

Unless there are carrots and then you get twelvety billion

In my (greedy) defence it’s proper ragu with just mirepoix, chicken livers and tomatoes. And not a huge amount of pasta as the meat sauce is the best bit!

Shit ton of Parmesan though 😂

I would do 350g for a chilli for 4 people. Bulked up with beans and veg (but not overly so). 100-125g per person

tweedlee · 04/01/2023 17:36

I am currently making a cottage pie for myself, DH and DS15 with 250g of mince so it's plenty I'd say.

Abraxan · 04/01/2023 17:36

I always go for around 100-159g of meat/fish per person, usually towards the upper range of that scaler for adults though.

HideTheCroissants · 04/01/2023 17:37

When I am making chilli con carne for the three of us (DH, me, adult DS) I get 400g of good mince from the butcher and we always have a portion over for freezing.

Pothoswithasparkle · 04/01/2023 17:38

These boxes always make it up on more basics like potatoes and rice.
I prefer more meat less of the "side". But we can't expect them to do that on budget and make profit.

Gousto mince lamb is VERY fatty so you don't end up with much...

ancientgran · 04/01/2023 17:38

Ostryga · 04/01/2023 16:54

Gosh maybe I am just very greedy then! It looks tiny.

To be fair I do use a standard pack of mince for 2 adults and a 6 year old with no leftovers so that may be where I’m going wrong.

Have you opened the pack? When I was doing hello fresh I often thought the meat portion looked small but I think it was packed tighter than supermarket packs. It was always enough in the end.

No, it's pretty hearty all on its own. Currently being served with lots of kale, though sometimes it's black beans, or potatoes, or a small amount of pasta.

A whole dessertspoonful between four people? Surely a teaspoonful would suffice?

Who is out here spooning peas in this economy?! One per person – if you quarter them carefully it bulks it out as a decent side so you can cut back and not bother with the cottage pie at all.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 04/01/2023 17:39

500g feeds 4 of us (2 adults, 2 teens) and sometimes with leftovers. We're greedy bastards too 😂

JoyeuxNarwhal · 04/01/2023 17:40

That was a YABU in case it wasn't obvious..

How do you deal with steak?

Shortkiwi · 04/01/2023 17:40

Out of interest did you weigh it or is that the stated weight? Wondering if they short changed you!!

DarkDayforMN · 04/01/2023 17:41

Are you being fooled by the vacuum pack, OP? Vacuum packed mince shrinks down to nothing.

rookiemere · 04/01/2023 17:42

We gave up on Hello Fresh for the reason the meat portions were too small. Admittedly we are greedy mashers, but one chicken breast between two just didn't cut the mustard for us.

I’m going to weigh it now for science

You can bulk it out with garlic.
Hello Fresh send an entire garlic for every “one clove” recipe.
And it’s in almost every recipe.
We had it for 3 weeks and I swear to god I could have opened a garlic shop 🤣

Spendonsend · 04/01/2023 17:43

500g between 4 here. We have big portions so i recon 240 between 2 is ok.

sneezums · 04/01/2023 17:43

I'd use 500g for 4 of us (all adults) and they'd be a portion left over!

I get annoyed now when I mince in the shop, as it takes up so much room! Wish shops would vacuum pack it too.

AHobbyaweek · 04/01/2023 17:45

I have found that Gousto and HelloFresh package their mince more densely so if you see the same size in a supermarket pack it looks a lot bigger!

Sgtmajormummy · 04/01/2023 17:46

I play hard to get with Hello Fresh and only order from then when it’s a really good offer.
Anyway after Christmas I wanted some fun recipes without going shopping and ordered 4meals x 4portions. There are only 3 of us so for one meal I use all the veg and half the meat (125% veg portions and 66% meat portions per person). We’re always full and I use the remaining meat for another meal.

So 16 Hello Fresh meat portions (plus some additional veg) did us a week of dinners. The meat is good quality and competitively priced IF you get a good offer.
