To think 240g of mince isn’t enough for 2 people?

Got a hello fresh delivery today and one of the recipes (classic cottage pie) was delivered with the smallest amount of mince I’ve ever seen. It is palm sized! Now I know theres other veggies and potatoes in it, but is this not slightly ridiculous? It’s about 4 mouthfuls of meat!

Am I just exceptionally greedy 😂

I'm with you OP, it is a small amount.

I use a 500g pack of mince for two people.

I understand the argument to save money and bulk up meals with lentils/veg, but you can eat what you want!

Xmasbaby11 · 04/01/2023 17:14

I think it is enough, depending on the quality of meat; if it's fatty, there won't be so much left after cooking.

It probably looks v small as you wouldn't normally cook such a small quantity of mince; usually people would cook at least 500g. Would you ever make a cottage pie for 2?

Porcinimushroom · 04/01/2023 17:20

It’s because you’re only making a little cottage pie for two people. It’s enough for that. If you’re trying to feed 3 people from it.then it’s too little and that’s your issue.

ILoveeCakes · 04/01/2023 17:20

People need to post their bodyweight next to their opinion of the correct portion size.
That's the only way we can evaluate their opinion.

BestKnitterInScotland · 04/01/2023 17:22

I usually use 500g pack between 5 of us, so yes 240g for 2 people is fine.

salamanderturtle · 04/01/2023 17:22

Agree - I would use 250g for 2 as a large portion. 500g does 4-6 meals when I add veg.

anotherusernamethiswerk · 04/01/2023 17:24

I make a 500g pack feed 6 of us so I think it's fine 🤣

Bookkeys · 04/01/2023 17:25

I use about that much to make fajitas and im always suprised there's some left over to put on top of nachos the next day

Dp eats a lot of food and there's still leftovers

It may go further than you think

Appleass · 04/01/2023 17:25

Not in my house, I use 500g for 3 !

pd339 · 04/01/2023 17:25

Sounds like your portions are the problem, not the other way around.

Cococomellon · 04/01/2023 17:25

Agree it is about right. I think 100-150g of meat each is more than enough.

AdaColeman · 04/01/2023 17:26

240g is the equivalent of half a pound, (in old money Xmas Wink) so I'd say that was an adequate amount for two people, especially as you will be adding vegetables. You could also add some puy lentils to make it more substantial.

Stravaig · 04/01/2023 17:27

500g mince plus lots of vegetables makes 10 portions of bolognese here!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/01/2023 17:27

OlleOskiFelle · 04/01/2023 16:53

I do an ounce for my family of four, plenty unless you are a glutton.
One mashed new potato for the topping obvs

That won't go far, you need to add a dessert spoonful of peas.

Ontopofthesunset · 04/01/2023 17:28

Most recipes use 500g for mince based recipes for 4 people, so 250 g for 2 sounds about right; it probably does look small though. I always cook for 4 if I'm following a recipe but when it's just me, DH and university age son there often isn't any left. But I serve the same portions when older son is also home and no one complains there isn't enough then, so I think it is just eating more than we need when there's extra.

mrsmalcolmreynolds · 04/01/2023 17:28

Agree with most PP it's fine. I find HF pack the meat quite tightly so it looks smaller than in a supermarket plastic box with lots of space round it. Plus better quality so doesn't shrink down as much.

Views on HF do vary wildly on here! Lots of people on this thread saying not enough food but on one a few months ago everyone was piling in to say how horrifically calorific all their meals are [shrug].

KillingLoneliness · 04/01/2023 17:28

Definitely plenty, the 400/500g ones are for 4 people, I tend to use the 250g but sometimes it gets substituted for the bigger pack but I use it all and we have the leftovers for lunch the next day

Blowyourowntrumpet · 04/01/2023 17:29

A 500g pack lasts 2 of us for 2 meals each, so it sounds about right to me

Ostryga · 04/01/2023 17:29

Stravaig · 04/01/2023 17:27

500g mince plus lots of vegetables makes 10 portions of bolognese here!

10?! Surely that is mostly pasta and a spoon of sauce on top?

A 500g pack makes 2 portions of ragu here 😂

When I make cottage pie or similar I generally make huge quantities so I will have leftovers to freeze and/or use for another meal later that week. I would really grudge putting the oven on for a cottage pie made with 240g of mince!

[glances smugly at tub of vegetarian chilli defrosting for tonight, made just before Christmas - hence sitting on MN now instead of cooking!]

mybluecar · 04/01/2023 17:30

It’s absolutely fine, we have that size portion for two adults and a 3yo and almost always have leftover mince.

Nosecan · 04/01/2023 17:30

I make spaghetti for 3 (hungry) people with 400g and there’s always left overs, so yeah it’s enough.

ThePoshUns · 04/01/2023 17:31

That's enough, I use 500g for a chilli for 4 people.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/01/2023 17:31

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 04/01/2023 17:27

That won't go far, you need to add a dessert spoonful of peas.

A whole dessertspoonful between four people? Surely a teaspoonful would suffice?

Pinkbananas01 · 04/01/2023 17:33

I use a 450g pack for 5 adult portions
