To Think We Should Still Be Wearing Masks

TheShellBeach · 28/12/2022 23:28

Especially seeing the news coming out of China, and the lies they seem to be telling about the Covid situation there.

I never stopped wearing a mask when shopping anyway, even though we were told it was no longer necessary.

Yes, I know that most people have now been vaccinated.

We should all be wearing masks outside.

Surely you mean 'inside' @CriticalAlert? It's really quite difficult to catch Covid outside in the open air unless you stand chatting to someone for 15 minutes or so, during which time they cough or sneeze repeatedly into your face. While having Covid themselves, of course.

DD2 says the likelihood is roughly on a par with getting struck by lightning. So not totally impossible, but when we are doing our risk assessments about going out on any given morning how many of us think 'oh no, I think I might get struck by lightning today so I might just stay home rather than go shopping/ take the kids to school/ go to work etc'?

I really wish the “oh you’re scared of COVID” mob would do one. Trying to patronise someone who is terrified of getting ill shows your low mentality

Being terrified of getting a mild illness is not normal and other people are not obligated to pander to your neurosis

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 31/12/2022 22:36

CriticalAlert · 31/12/2022 16:40

I'm not being selfish! I think we have a duty to look out for each other, a reciprocity you don't appear to understand.

You are being selfish, you’re expecting everyone else in the world to dance to your irrational anxieties

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 31/12/2022 22:47

I think the whole thing is a very depressing look back. The people at the start screaming about a lockdown are like those on this thread demanding people sTOp bEInG seLFiSh, never for a nansecond thought how masks and a lockdown would damage the extremely vulnerable. Like the people relying on food banks and free school meals who would starve. Or the SE people who’d get literally nothing from the government and couldn’t earn. Or people on DV relationships whose daily trip to work was their only escape. I noticed at the time that my friends whose DH had good jobs, who had older children that could learn online themselves and could either be on furlough for a sunny Spring or could suddenly WFH and do the bare minimum, were the biggest champions.

But yeah people who, 3 years on, when the world is vaccinated and we know for the vast majority COVID is a mild illness, who won’t wear a literally useless bit of paper on their face are the ones who are selfish

some of you seriously need to get therapy for your health-related neurosis. And consider that not being exposed to others forever more will be counterproductive if you want a good immune system.

Completely agree!

XenoBitch · 29/12/2022 17:29

Honestly, if we end up the midst of a huge Covid surge again, then it is all you have mentioned that I would be scared of... not Covid itself.

It was an awful time.

It was, and I'm still traumatised by it.

FriedEggs1 · 01/01/2023 11:07

TheKeatingFive · 30/12/2022 19:43

FFS stop being so selfish everyone and just wear a mask. It's not difficult to be a human being

Why is this all about wearing masks? If people genuinely want to take the pressure off the nhs, there should be much more emphasis on looking after our own health, optimising fitness, avoiding obesity. That would do far more to ease the burden.

Exactly!!

FriedEggs1 · 01/01/2023 11:00

It was, and I'm still traumatised by it.

I’m just amazed how easily and willingly people fell for the fear and stepped in line. Nobody was ever ‘terrified’ of getting flu but they were TOLD to be terrified of COVID. So they were.

And I can’t believe nearly 3 years later, when most people are vaxxed and we’ve realised that for the vast majority it’s a mild illness, people are still terrified. And think that other people should be terrified too.

Do you know what terrifies me? Balloons. I can’t stand the rubbery bastards, they pop in your face and I have extremely sensitive hearing. I hate being in a room with balloons as you’re guaranteed to have one annoying fucker bursts at least one.

But the thing is I realise this is my totally irrational fear I don’t go round crying and saying “would you selfish BASTARDS just stop having balloons, they’re loud and scary and CONSIDER OTHERS”. I realise it’s a bloody stupid fear to have and try to get over it as best I can.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 01/01/2023 11:09

I’m assuming @Jourdain11 post was being sarcastic?

FriedEggs1 · 01/01/2023 11:18

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet

Yes. And if people had avoided the telly and the "news"papers, they'd never know what they were meant to be frightened of.

Completely agree with your balloon analogy.

No, you don’t have a clue - why are you advocating for wearing masks in a situation where it’s completely pointless because it’s almost impossible to catch COVID?

loulouljh · 01/01/2023 15:26

You crack on. I will never wear one. Useless. Distressing if deaf. Dehumanising. Pointless.

We're not in a situation where it's impossible to catch Covid! I wish we were. People who have been quadruple vaccinated are catching Covid. OK not as many as before - but it's still out there and contagious. I think you're view is blinkered, you're believing what you want to believe and are not accepting the truth. There would be no harm in us wearing masks public transport, shops, hospitals etc. If we all did it we'd be reducing the spread and helping the NHS. Not rocket science.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2023 16:14

It's been a while but IIRC the vaccination never stopped anyone catching it.

Agree. Others can roll the dice if they wish , but I've managed to evade Covid so far and intend to continue.

People forget that their immune systems fend off other diseases, like cancer.

Your immune system does not "fend off" cancer.

I mean I don't judge anyone wearing them but I think if you are vaccinated then you shouldn't be made to wear a mask long-term. This isn't something that will go away overnight and it's a bit unrealistic for us all to be wearing them every time we go out. But if you want to and choose to then that's fine.

No difference between vaccinated & unvaccinated in terms of transmission.

😂 That would be weird but strangely unsurprising.

No difference between vaccinated & unvaccinated in terms of transmission.

I've often wondered this. Is there not a lower likelihood of a vaccinated person becoming infected with covid, in which case there's a corresponding lower risk of infecting others?

Not asked in a goady way. I'm also aware that vaccinated people can still catch covid (I'm currently in that category) and transmit it to others.

2X4B523P · 01/01/2023 19:11

The bottom line is that there is no legal requirement to be un-selfish. The vast majority can be as selfish as we like.

I find those who want to impose their will on others to be the selfish ones, I support the freedom to wear one if you want and don’t if you don’t want to.
