To Think We Should Still Be Wearing Masks

TheShellBeach · 28/12/2022 23:28

Especially seeing the news coming out of China, and the lies they seem to be telling about the Covid situation there.

I never stopped wearing a mask when shopping anyway, even though we were told it was no longer necessary.

Yes, I know that most people have now been vaccinated.

Your immune system does not "fend off" cancer.

Well actually it does. It’s known as the immuno editing hypothesis and has three stages elimination, editing and escape.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immunoediting

There are also plenty of studies in mice lacking immune systems showing that they develop more cancers.

User963 · 01/01/2023 19:17

That’s why there is so much research in immune therapies as cancer treatments.

Chillyweather · 01/01/2023 21:47

ThaiDye · 29/12/2022 06:02

@Chillyweather the belief that you need exposure to pathogens to build up your immune system is nonsense. Your immune system works fine without constant exposure to viruses, and catching COVID will damage your immune system, there's plenty of evidence of that in the scientific literature already.

Have a read of this www.salon.com/2022/12/04/does-your-immune-system-need-a-workout-the-science-behind-immunity-debt-explained/

I think the article is saying it's complicated and that even mild covid can destroy t cells so children are more likely to get worse RSV. Dr John Campbells YouTube channel said that vaccine plus covid infection protects better against further covid infection than just vaccine again due to t cells. Article also omits that in 1918 flu pandemic parents died but grandparents survived because grandparents had similar strain as a child. I think the social isolation of continuing to be cautious now could be worse in the long run. Similarly if everyone gives up team sport and risk to save NHS could be worse for obesity and mental health. Important thing is competitive pay and conditions for NHS asap.

CriticalAlert · 01/01/2023 16:02

We're not in a situation where it's impossible to catch Covid! I wish we were. People who have been quadruple vaccinated are catching Covid. OK not as many as before - but it's still out there and contagious. I think you're view is blinkered, you're believing what you want to believe and are not accepting the truth. There would be no harm in us wearing masks public transport, shops, hospitals etc. If we all did it we'd be reducing the spread and helping the NHS. Not rocket science.

Except you want people to wear masks at all times outside - that IS pointless.

And there is damage to wearing masks - just because there’s no damage to you it doesn’t mean there is t to other people. Besides one key point - THEY DON’T EVEN WORK!!

ThaiDye · 01/01/2023 23:52

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet there is plenty of evidence of masks working. Objections to masks are ideological, not science based.

In schools, even if kids aren't all in N95, masks reduce viral load and therefore chance of infection. See below for short pieces showing masks reduce infection (these are twitter links because scientists/doctors on Twitter provide easy to understand summaries + links to the literature, where mass media is failing dismally):

twitter.com/Kapur_AK/status/1594892618349088771?t=BZXKEn1zx000yNtfKdgUJA&s=19

Also please tell me how masks are damaging? What peer review evidence is there of this? Lots of people saying they cause speech delays but is there any actual evidence, or is it just an excuse? Kids in South East Asia largely mask in school, without all the whinging we get in the west.

ThaiDye · 01/01/2023 23:58

@Chillyweather the important thing for the NHS is for us to reduce the burden on it by not getting sick. Every COVID wave in 2022 started from a higher baseline, so the NHS never got breathing room. Remove all the COVID related illness (which extends to RSV, flu etc because we've become more susceptible to those from COVID, heart attack and stroke incidence also higher since COVID) by cutting transmission will help.

Cut transmission with masks, ventilation and HEPA filters. Vaccines are not sufficient in their own because they don't stop infection. We don't need lockdowns, we just need to act like we actually want to stop COVID spreading rather than ignoring it

And all parents should watch this video by a cardiologist to learn why we REALLY should avoid our kids getting COVID by improving air quality in schools twitter.com/CC14_CC14/status/1609130982346743810?t=HC0owOpIkfkm6SEazP0GvA&s=19

PlusLaMeme · 02/01/2023 00:22

And this is another reason why I won't wear masks. It never stops with masks in healthcare settings (iT's NoT rOcKeT sCiEnCe) They always come for the children.

Making children wear masks was the most abominable thing I have witnessed in my lifetime.

ThaiDye · 02/01/2023 06:15

@PlusLaMeme so you'd rather your child get sick than wear a mask? You need to reassess your priorities.

Putting children in masks saves them from infection, in schools, and by extension the same would apply in healthcare settings. www.washingtonpost.com/education/2022/11/10/school-mask-mandate-covid-study/

BiasedBinding · 02/01/2023 06:59

“you'd rather your child get sick than wear a mask? You need to reassess your priorities.”

unfair and simplistic either/or, but you know that. If that’s your personal either/or when weighing up whether your child should wear a mask around the clock then crack on. Other people are bringing different, and valid, factors into their decision-making. I know you know all this though really

Do you have dc and do they wear masks still? How old are they

anu22 · 02/01/2023 07:12

BCBird · 29/12/2022 06:50

I haven't stop wearing one-my choice. As for people thinkin u hsve Covid and giving u a wide berth,I wish they would for me. No idea of personal space. As for learning to live with it,I don't think this means all restrictions should be discarded. IMO a mask.is a very small.thing to do at very little inconvenience.

Genuine question do you wear a mask to protect yourself or to protect other people from you ?

ThaiDye · 02/01/2023 07:13

18 months old so too young for mask. For this reason I don't take him to any indoor public locations as the risk of catching COVID is too high. He gets plenty of outdoor play instead.

BiasedBinding · 02/01/2023 07:19

Yes that kind of decision is much easier to make with just one small toddler. Trust that many of us are putting our children’s needs first, just as you are yours, and have come to different conclusions.

Outdoor play is always good anyway but as they get older will you avoid museums, theatre and school even?

Or just send them to school with a mask? They’d be the only one in all likelihood

anu22 · 02/01/2023 07:24

What's now become obvious- now most of the world appears to have abandoned all covid protocols and gone back to normal - is that everyone seriously overreacted and we spent two years in lockdown for no reason at all. Cos it hasn't gone away now we've just learned to live with it and realize it's basically like having the flu.

@Thebestwaytoscareatory

which viruses are beneficial to humans? Thanks.

All viruses cos they help to build natural immunity

Did you know that special measures in crisis situations are designed to avoid overloading the system?

Or would you have been happy to miss your routine NHS appointments because everyone was actually overreacting, and we could all have just caught COVID in the first wave and ended up in hospitals with infinite numbers of bed spaces

the standard of deductive reasoning on this website is a joke. People are just led by emotion and disgust at what they don’t like doing.

Does smallpox build natural immunity @anu22 ?

Does Ebola?

HIV?

like I said. Your standard of deductive reasoning is terrifying.

You can’t argue with people like you, because you will state anything loudly, no matter how unscientific or incorrect, to back your position and browbeat others.

Ebola. Good luck with that.

anu22 · 02/01/2023 07:34

@CriticalAlert I'm pretty sure the problems with the nhs right now are not caused by people not being wearing masks / we've all moved on from that rhetoric

anu22 · 02/01/2023 07:39

Vaccinations. Know anyone who's had smallpox recently ? You know vaccines work by creating antibodies right ?

anu22 · 02/01/2023 07:42

@SavoirFlair "Or would you have been happy to miss your routine NHS appointments because everyone was actually overreacting, and we could all have just caught COVID in the first wave and ended up in hospitals with infinite numbers of bed spaces "

Do you realize that routine nhs appointments were scrapped ? People with cancer left undiagnosed or untreated cos everyone was terrified and hiding in their homes. Yeah we could have all caught covid in the "first wave" and what ? We'd all have died ?

ThaiDye · 02/01/2023 07:48

@anu22 COVID is not like the flu. Sadly we've been badly let down by the media that's failed to report that COVID killed more people in 2022 than in previous years, and in England killed more children than in 20/21 combined. It kills more than flu. And for those who had "mild" disease it still raises risk of stroke, heart attack, diabetes, long COVID, causes brain damage, vascular damage, the list goes on. The NHS is on its knees. "Living with COVID" is a load of bollocks.

And the government has actively pushed a mass infection strategy, through CHILDREN, to generate "herd immunity " except that has been a huge failure, hasn't it? Would you accept a similar mass infection strategy for smallpox, polio, rabies, the plague? No, so why do we accept it for COVID. Most children who get polio only have mild cold/fever yet we didn't try to eradicate it by infecting all children. The government has completely f*cked up it's public health. I hope they are all brought to justice soon.

ThaiDye · 02/01/2023 07:53

I hope that by the time he goes to school the government would have sorted itself out and realized that public health means protecting us from infection, not reneging all responsibilities. This means mandating clean indoor air in all locations where smoking is forbidden: schools, hospital, public transport etc. HEPA filtration, ventilation, and Far-UVC is looking hopeful. This will help to greatly reduce viral load and therefore risk of disease.

In the meantime if you have children in school please look up Corsi Rosenthal boxes and make sure to get one in your childrens classrooms. Can get DIY for 80 quid and will protect against airborne infections. These are more effective and cheaper than the ones recommended by the Dept of Education www.airbon.co.uk/post/diy-air-purifiers

BiasedBinding · 02/01/2023 07:55

What will you do if the government hasn’t “sorted itself out”?
