AIBU?

To be depressed and angry that sex offenders will be able to “change gender”

Following last nights vote by MSPs to reject an amendment to forbid sex offenders from accessing easier access to a GRC, it seems that womens rights to privacy and decency , same sex care , etc is not important. They are still to vote on the whole bill but until the legalities are clearer, surely this cannot be acceptable?

It's utterly disgraceful and a massive shit show.

My MSP has stood up for their convictions and voted against their party, I let them know I appreciate it, must be a really hard position to be in.

Totally disastrous consequences.

It's an absolute disgrace. Shame on those MSPs who prioritised sex offenders feelings over female safety.

This is what we've been talking about and fighting against on the Feminism section. Now maybe people will understand the issues and not resort to calling us transphobes and bigots.

I agree.

At least one person thinks the op was unreasonable. I would love to know why.

I mean how much internalised misogyny must a female MSP have to vote against an amendment like that

They would still be sex offenders, no? It wouldn't wipe them off the sex offender registry. Don't see what difference it makes.

I'd quite like to know who the Scottish government thought they were protecting? Have we really reached the point where a sex offenders feelings (or lies?) are more important than safeguarding?

What's also depressing is that this thread won't last 5 minutes on AIBU and that alone should make people wonder what the hell is going on.

These are the types of offenders the Scottish government is intending to assist in concealing their identities and past crimes so that they have the opportunity to offend again without pesky safeguarding getting in the way. They will then be housed in women's prisons.

Never interrupt your enemy in the course of making a mistake.

It's brilliant for the Tories - the attention paid to self-ID in the leadership contest in the summer shows that they have totally grasped that this is a wedge issue with the potential to alienate naturally left-leaning voters from supporting Labour/the Libdems/the SNP. They just have to sit back and watch.

Of course, it's shite for women, but who cares, if it wins you a few votes in marginal seats?

Their NAME will be on the sex offenders register which is FA use if they went on the register John Smith and are now identifying as Joanna Smith and they have the documents to prove their new identity.

The issue is that the offender is responsible for declaring all previous names but there is no proposed mechanism for marrying all their names and crimes together for the purpose of carrying out effective DBS checks. The Scottish government are relying on criminals to be honest. What could go wrong?

Where they are jailed, for a start.
Victims might be forced to refer to them as if they were women.

The prison service (amongst other things) must be reinstated to be single sex as should always have been the case.

Will the record on the register be changed to match their new name and sex marker? 🤔 Nice for them to have a new identity to hide behind don't you think, when the conviction and any associated press coverage will likely be in their "deadname" and "prior sex".

The difference is these male rapists could be sent to a women's prison.

Rose West can't rape inmates.

Wow. You really can't see the issue with locking up a male sex offender alongside fresh female victims rather than alongside other males? Heard of Karen White?

Females rarely sex offend and Most females who sex offend, such as Rose West, do so at the behest of males.

99% of sex offenders are male, most survivors of sexually assault/abuse/rape are female. Most violent crimes are commited by men.

The MOJ figures are readily available to prove this.

Males are bigger and stronger than females. A female stands a better chance of defending herself against another female than a man.

I can't fucking believe I need to spell it out.
