Light-hearted but... still irritated

Works Xmas do tonight. I'm the team line manager, but not paid massively more than the rest of them. I think - and they say - I'm a decent boss who protects them from pressure

Have bought thankyou Xmas gifts for all (15) , also thought I should offer to buy the first drink.

Most people standard large glass of wine etc, one cheeky git ( stood at bar and so placed his order direct, I was just stood with card) - a large glass of red with a double brandy chaser. His drink alone was £20

I'd never do that - diet coke thanks and I'd buy my own expensive drink later!!

Don’t know if anyone has updated on the thread yet but here ya go, OP, you made The Mirror: www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/boss-fumes-cheeky-staff-member-28688487.amp

He must think you’re buying it on the company credit card?

Hopefully the CFer sees it and pops £20 in OP's Xmas card

i am guessing he thinks you have offered because you are putting on expenses since you are manager

We can't expense alcohol in the public sector

I had a situation with a CF who worked in my team - of 12. Xmas team meal in a restaurant and when the bill came we split it equally - it was along the lines of costing £26ish each (back in the day) so most of us put in £30 to include a tip.

CF team member took the cash and went up to pay - I was sober (driving) and watched as he paid with his credit card and put the cash in his pocket.
Basically we paid for his meal with all the tips. Completely changed how I thought about him

Did you see how much he paid though? There is an outside chance he put the whole sum, including his share, through onto his card. I've done things like that because it's a good way of getting cash out using your credit card, without incurring the same fees as you'd get for a cash withdrawal on a CC. I am clear with people what I'm doing though, and in that situation would make sure the tip was included in the total.

Company credit card?

Have you read the thread?
Or even the OO's posts?

AfterSchoolWorry · 09/12/2022 08:16

Are you buying these gifts and drinks from your own money?😬

Sparkletastic · 09/12/2022 08:40

Massive CF. I'd use this as the catalyst to knock it all on the head. Two tins of Heroes and a Christmas card each next year. We are in a cost of living crisis what more excuse do you need.

T1Dmama · 09/12/2022 17:46

The gift was generous. I wouldn’t have bought drinks too!

angela99999 · 09/12/2022 17:47

Perhaps he imagines you can claim it on expenses? Still a cheeky thing to do though. I used to buy bottles of wine for them to share, cheaper than individual glasses and they could have a selection, or a beer. I did claim it on expenses.

GUARDIAN1 · 09/12/2022 17:49

I'd have said "one drink each, either the wine or the spirit. Not both", or said to the person serving "his order isn't part of mine".

Realitea · 09/12/2022 17:52

Do what we do and put £100 behind the bar. They can fight over who has what themselves then!

MarvellousMonsters · 09/12/2022 17:55

I would've said there and then that I would pay for the wine but the brandy was on him. CF

Scarfymcscarface · 09/12/2022 17:56

You bought thank you gifts for 15 people? I’d have left it at that and not offered to buy them drinks as well. Unless I was on a ridiculously much higher salary than them!
You sound very kind and YANBU to feel irritated OP!

the person who ordered a chaser was a greedy inconsiderate fucker (who should have checked if they thought you could claim it on expenses! )

Betty65 · 09/12/2022 17:59

Perhaps they think the company is actually covering the cost of the first drink….

cherish123 · 09/12/2022 18:04

I don't think you have to buy drinks at all.

Bunchymcbunchface · 09/12/2022 18:07

I’d have said, oh there we go Rockafella here is buying us all chasers with his round next.

if he’d replied ‘I can’t afford that’ I’d have replied, neither can I do drop the chaser and stop being a cheeky git.

Hmm1234 · 09/12/2022 18:08

Everyone should buy a round next that’s how it works!

Rainraindontgoaway · 09/12/2022 18:10

YANBU

cheeky bastard and a total embarrassment. That would annoy me massively and I don’t think I would offer the first drink for each team member again.

Betty65 · 09/12/2022 17:59

Even still, who would still order a £20 drink.

With 15 people? Really? You would have 15 drinks on a night out?

anon666 · 09/12/2022 18:49

That's CF for sure.

Mind you, if you're the manager it could be a costly brandy in terms of career prospects 🤔

MadMadaMim · 09/12/2022 18:52

I voted YABU because I think YABVVVU to let him take advantage in this way!

I would definitely speak with him at work and make it absolutely clear that you did not appreciate his selfish and rude behaviour.

Total Dick move. I would have asked him for the money, on the night, as it happened. Total CF

eastegg · 09/12/2022 19:19

Quincythequince · 08/12/2022 05:05

Having said that, if you’re offering a drink, don’t just expect people to get a diet coke. He sounds tight, but actually, so do you.

I don’t think that’s fair. OP talks about a ‘standard large glass of wine’ suggesting she was absolutely fine with that. I don’t think she’s suggesting everyone should have had coke.

Missingpop · 09/12/2022 19:26

Sorry I did laugh about this; just for the cheek he showed; I’d have said don’t bother with that one he will have a tap water & be great full the rude fucking shit
