David Badiel - Jews Don't Count. Shocked

Everanewbie · 22/11/2022 12:28

AIBU to be disappointed and upset at the blindspot for antisemitism that was highlighted in last night's excellent documentary? The Leigh Francis part was especially revealing to me. The (quite correct) groveling apologies for the Michael Jackson, Craig David and Mel B characters were a contrast to the defining silence on the David Badiel character.

What is more, the reaction from the left-wing commentators (Owen Jones, et al) on twitter seem to suggest that Badiel says other racism doesn't exist, which feels like a deliberate and willful misrepresentation.

Really telling someone to give it up/give it a rest when they call out someone racism and impact this has had

oh dear

Seriously. She's made her point ad nauseum. Everyone has taken in, processed and responded respectfully. Is there a need to keep going on like a broken record? It's like every other page.

If this was the first time it was mentioned, you'd have a valid point. But it's not.

Irrespective of what people think of DB, I personally don't think his history (for which he's apologised) detracts from the message or the response he received on the CH4 program. You could swap him with anyone. The point still stands on its own right. The support he received from his guests and accounts on here only serve to support the claim that there are acceptable sides to racism and discrimination.

I've no strong feelings about DB either way but if he weakens the argument for people then it really demonstrates that they haven't actually given the topic much thought, or are looking for ways not to engage, kind of proving his point.

To change the tone somewhat - did you know it is a minor Jewish festival today and tomorrow - for the new moon (Rosh Chodesh - literally the head of the month). It is not a big festival - not one of these where people take off from work. At most people have a nice meal or something extra for the meal - as well as the prayers being a little bit longer. It has been traditionally associated with women though - and there are lots of evidence that over the generations it was celebrated more enthusiastically by women - in some eras and some times at least some women didn't work on Rosh Chodesh - or didn't do what is usually considered women's work - laundry, weaving, spinning other clothes making.

Everanewbie · 24/11/2022 09:25

@beachcitygirl have you watched the documentary and/or read the book? Just for the sake of conversation, if you haven't, could you? And try to divorce your hatred for DB from the issues that he is raising.

Etc

You wanted proof. ( oh and this wasn't 20

Or maybe just maybe the genocide of the Roma doesn't count to you ?
Or is it only the genocide of Jews that count ?

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 09:26

@Everanewbie yes. I have.

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 09:27

And whilst some of this thread are determined to downplay the Roma genocide- I'll keep bringing up Baddiels hatred of Roma.

You are really overstepping any kind of acceptable discussion now. Accusing a poster who has been nothing but polite and respectful of racial hatred with zero evidence (like you did to me and others yesterday).

This is really not ok at all.

You owe @Lunar270 an apology and you really should leave this thread. There is nothing constructive in what you are posting, just groundless personal attacks on multiple people.

BloodAndFire · 24/11/2022 09:31

In fact multiple people, Jewish and non Jewish, have discussed parallels between the treatment of the roma and the Jews in this thread.

You are just derailing and destroying an otherwise mostly respectful and interesting thread and shouting over Jewish people over and over again.

Now you're moving into personal attacks on anyone who politely asks you to stop. I really hope the moderators intervene again at some point because this is just stupid and wrong.

Rosh chodesh sameach to anyone celebrating x

Everanewbie · 24/11/2022 09:32

Come on @beachcitygirl Roma genocide is clearly awful and very serious. But its more whataboutery to avoid talking about the subject of the documentary. The documentary is about the apparent blindspot to antisemitism in progressives and the subtle and not so subtle antisemitism that is ignored, denied and whataboutery'd. If you feel so strongly about the ill treatment of the Roma community, start your own thread or take some action. Don't use it as a stick to beat another marginilised group with. The veil seems to be slipping here.

Why don't you start a discussion thread on that, then? On the credibility of somebody who has clearly displayed racism in the past talking about being a victim of racism himself?

Why can't you stop trying to derail a thread about modern antisemitism?

LegoVsFoot · 24/11/2022 09:47

@beachcitygirl denying the minimising and whataboutery of antisemitism...by saying 'what about the oppression of other groups' 😂😂😂

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 09:48

@Everanewbie no. Your mask is slipping. You're so so determined to ignore Baddiel racism towards my community another minority that you'll forgive him anything, even that which he hasn't asked forgiveness for.

He IS the presenter of the documentary and his feelings towards Roma are evidenced & that doesn't seem to matter a jot to many. I've discussed my lived experiences of hate because of my ethnicity and that Baddiel exacerbated that.

But as long as he's saying what you want him to, none of that matters.

Can't you see how deeply deeply offensive that is.

Why is anti-semitism more important than anti-Roma racism?

Why are you all so keen to excuse his behaviour?

Neither you nor @BloodAndFire nor @Lunar270 have condemned his statements about my community or acknowledged my fears or experiences & the triggering effect of Baddiel.

Not once.

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 09:50

@FloresApparuerunt because the thread title is

David Baddiel - Jews don't count

And this is a man who made damm sure Roma don't count.

It isn't more important. But I suppose I am ignoring past indiscretions of the presenter because it was the subject that interested and shocked me. And the examples raised by not just him, but the numerous other participants were compelling. I am sorry you have experienced racism and cannot forgive someone for it. But this thread isn't about anti-black racism or roma communities, as valid as those threads might be. We won't make life any better for black people or roma by ignoring the plight of jews, or dismissing issues based on some badly judged jokes 25 years ago.

David Baddiel commenting on "using offensive language towards Travellers" according to thejc.com: “I’m sorry and I shouldn’t have used the term to refer to my own appearance. The internet often picks up on things that you did or said a long time ago that makes you look like a hypocrite because of things you said now, but the truth is we are all learning and changing all the time. My apologies again: sorry.”

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 10:03

@Everanewbie his Roma comments weren't 25 years ago & he hasn't apologised & is being celebrated here. That's my point.

I've also said many many many times that anti-semitism is vile, on the rise & ignored by many.

I've seen no such respect coming back to me & my community.

ScribblingPixie · 24/11/2022 10:03

@ScribblingPixie I'm not Jewish and don't subscribe to the JC so I (and most of my community missed this) what a shame he didn't apologise on live tv.in the same manner he was hateful to us.

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 10:09

@Everanewbie well then maybe the title should have been anti-semitism is wrong.
Only talk about that please.
No problem there. Absolutely accurate.

Instead of the title it has which shone a light on the racist Baddiel.

ScribblingPixie · 24/11/2022 10:11

I'm not Jewish either @beachcitygirl. It's online though and shows that the issue was addressed strongly by the Jewish newspaper. In the same article Baddiel also describes Jimmy Carr's well-known offensive joke about Roma people as "cruel and racist". A Google search shows he also wrote on Twitter about it: "Meanwhile, away from stupid discussions about the limits of comedy, my sympathies are with the Roma and Sinti community who suffered so much during the Holocaust."

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 10:12

Thank you very very much @ScribblingPixie ❤️

Holidayfinder · 24/11/2022 10:14

The thing is you can’t separate the man from the message in this instance!
Over the past few days, I have seen videos of Baddiel, abusing overweight women, jokes about starving babies, Eastern European women, abusing Roma people, and religious Jews!
He has no moral authority whatsoever and he is a crude unfunny racist himself,

My position is very clear. I abhor any form of racism against any community, but I don’t agree with Baddiel that anti semitism is not taken as seriously as other forms of racism.

I am therefore going to disagree with the whole premise of this thread, and say so, even if there are certain posters who are determined to close that conversation down.
it’s very obvious the two or three posters who are trying to police the thread, and it’s certainly not beach city girl.

That is my question. I wasn't inviting a critique of DB, or suggesting we should tackle every ill in the world. I think my OP is pretty clear that I was inviting conversation on the subjects highlighted.
