David Badiel - Jews Don't Count. Shocked

Everanewbie · 22/11/2022 12:28

AIBU to be disappointed and upset at the blindspot for antisemitism that was highlighted in last night's excellent documentary? The Leigh Francis part was especially revealing to me. The (quite correct) groveling apologies for the Michael Jackson, Craig David and Mel B characters were a contrast to the defining silence on the David Badiel character.

What is more, the reaction from the left-wing commentators (Owen Jones, et al) on twitter seem to suggest that Badiel says other racism doesn't exist, which feels like a deliberate and willful misrepresentation.

@gailsmile yes I know it’s wrong. I feel shame about it. I also have a non Jewish parent and my Jewish family is non-religious, so it’s easy for me not to mention in it.

Every Holocaust Memorial Day I think about posting about my mother’s grandfather on social media, but I always end up being too nervous to do thatSad

Notwavingbutsignalling · 23/11/2022 22:20

I would really love to do something that showed the Jewish community here that people hear them.

What could we do?

Call out antisemitism when you see/hear it. Listen to voices that are talking about it (without trying to drown them out with whataboutery) are honestly two of the biggest.

Onceuponatimethen · 23/11/2022 22:36

Hiding yourself away is one of the horrible impacts of racism in all forms and certainly of antisemitism. One of my siblings has a very Jewish name and my Jewish grandfather was very frightened about that and wanted my parents to change it.

RandomPerson42 · 23/11/2022 22:41

Surely we all know it’s usually down to religious divisions and attitudes based on that being passed down even to those who are not religious - why else do people call the jewish “god killers”?

Every religion thinks it is the only true religion and persons of all others are lesser and will burn in their hell.

Why do so many black people I know detest asians?

Why do people create their own little communities instead of integrating?

All religious schools should be banned.

Throw away the religions and (most of) the wars are gone.

ScribblingPixie · 23/11/2022 21:57

I'm really sorry to hear about your experiences, @gailsmile. I'm scared to ask if it's getting better or worse.

Thank you.

In my experience it comes in waves.

At times of unrest between Palestine and Israel there is always a rise in antisemitic incidents.

This is significant because nearly all my experiences of antisemitism were by white British people and not by Muslims who may have stronger connections to Palestine. So the anti-Israel rhetoric is most definitely being translated into antisemitism.

As an ultra orthodox religious Jewish girl I can confidently say this is very untrue about the Jewish religion.

Jews hold space for all religions including Christianity and Islam. We very much respect that others serve God as per their beliefs. We do not believe Muslims or Christians will burn in hell. Only those who disrespect others are looked down on.

Jews can't stop being Jews in the eyes of the world. Look at what happened in Nazi Germany where people were asked to demonstrate their history back generations to prove that they weren't Jewish.

Most wars at least in recent centuries are not about religion. Scratch the surface and they are about what they always have been, resources and land. Religion is an add on.

gailsmile · 23/11/2022 22:27

@Notwavingbutsignalling

I think the way to show support is as with any form of racism, to educate yourself, raise awareness and call it out when you see it.

I'm curious, for those here who consider hiding their Jewishness to avoid antisemitism, although I fully understand the fear, don't you feel that is giving in to the antisemitism and allowing them to be victorious?

Yes I totally get what you mean about giving in. I am not observient, and would consider myself agnostic, though I'm fully Ashkenazi, and most of the time I can't be bothered to deal with people's ignorance, so I don't generally talk about being Jewish. I will make an effort to talk about it more now, as this thread has made me realise I have nothing to hide.

Bergmum · 23/11/2022 23:14

Just as a very typical example of anti Israel anti Jewish sentiment. This morning there were two bombs at bus stops in Jerusalem planted by Palestinian terrorists. There was a young 16 year old boy killled and many injuries, some serious.
This is not something that the medi bother with at all. However if it would be the reverse there would be majour uproar in the media.

gailsmile · 23/11/2022 23:15

@Onceuponatimethen
I totally get the fear.

For me the biggest pride was when someone mumbled in a shop "they should have gassed you all..".
I felt victorious that despite all the dangerous antisemitism that we've faced throughout history, my Jewish faith and community is now thriving.
Hitler did not win.

But yes the worry is very real.

Shamoo37 · 23/11/2022 23:27

I grew up in a city with a tiny Jewish community and hold jewish identity but am largely non practicing. The majority of people where I live will never have met or spoken to a jewish person. At infant school I was taught that Jews killed Jesus so I felt bad about my religion. Growing up I was often told that Jews were tight with money so I made sure I was generous. Drinking in a pub I was yelled at by a stranger because I looked like a F'ing Jew. Walking along the road I was spat at and given the Nazi salute. At work people made Jew jokes when I needed to find budget savings. When introduced to someone the introducer will often follow with "she's jewish". At a school open day, seeking a school for my child and wanting them to be safe and secure, there was a swastika and "Kill the Jews" graffiti on the wall. This in a city with no real Jewish community. So, when my children talk with school friends about celebrating Jewish festivals with their grandparents I love their naivety and their pride in being different, but I worry for the reaction that they will get. Saying that you are Jewish out loud just feels like a real challenge, worrying about the response from others. My experiences aren't daily occurences, unlike people from other cultures and communities. I walked behind a lady last week and saw her being looked up and down and the door purposefully not being held open for her to pass. I don't have that level of daily experience but given my understanding of how it feels to be judged on your heritage I seek to ensure that all cultures are welcomed into spaces and communities, and that differing cultural needs are understood and met, in the unrealistic hope that one day there will be acceptance and understanding for all. So DB, like him or loathe him, gave me the opportunity to reflect and build others understanding of something I have never really spoken of before.

BlueWalnut · 23/11/2022 23:36

RambamThankyouMam · 22/11/2022 12:48

Thanks for raising this.

I'm a Jew.

What really hits home for me is the fact that my daughter's Jewish school (in a northern English city) has police and security on the gates. No other minority group needs to be protected like this. I live with a sort of low-level fear that an anti-Semite might one day throw something over the fence into the playground, or try to enter with a weapon.

That's anti-Semitism. The fear.

Absolutely, I think this when I experience the high level of security at a synagogue in comparison to a church.

gailsmile · 23/11/2022 23:41

@Shamoo37
Its so sad that people feel intimidated into hiding their heritage and culture.
Wouldn't it be beautiful if we could all live in harmony and have respect for each other.

Yes it would.
What a shame some of us that have been abused have to be confronted with the hideous Baddiel opining on racism & people being apologists for him.

In the midst of this very interesting thread, where people of all backgrounds are engaging in an open and empathetic manner, your constant need to bring it back to your hatred of Baddiel is very telling.

Why so keen to derail a discussion of antisemitism?

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 00:00

@ChanukahLewinsky

It's a discussion about the BADDIEL documentary. (See post title) not anti-semitism per se.

How would you react to someone that's a known anti-Semitic and that mocked Jews on tv. (Regularly)
Wearing clothes or style that emphasised Jewish features in a negative way & using Jewish slurs & being vile making a documentary about racism and being feted for it, on national tv. ?? Not well I'm sure.

Try empathy for the communities he's made slurs against.
Try having empathy for & others & my lived experience.

He's never apologised to the Roma community.

One black footballer wasn't his only victim & he took 25 years to apologise to him. Despite ruining the man's life.

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 00:00

Oh and @ChanukahLewinsky what is my hatred of Baddiel telling of?

Do tell?

Smokebelch · 24/11/2022 01:07

It's a discussion about the BADDIEL documentary. (See post title) not anti-semitism per se.

The documentary was about anti-semtism in Britain, particularly its resurgence on the Left. So the thread IS about "antisemitism per se". It's quite clear from the OP's first post!! She explicitly states it's about antisemitism "blindspots".

Odd (not really) how you seem to have an issue about that. Your whataboutery in response to people sharing their awful experiences suggests you've got an issue that's WAY beyond David Baddiel. So yes, as PP said, you're derailing.

How would you react to someone that's a known anti-Semitic and that mocked Jews on tv. (Regularly)

That's exactly how a large section of the Jewish community felt being confronted by the persistent Jew-baiter Ash Sarkar as a talking head in a documentary series about the Holocaust. Sure you were fine with that though!

beachcitygirl · 24/11/2022 06:23

@Smokebelch as I have said consistently. I have an issue with Baddiel as he has many times mocked my community.

Zero fucks given by him, you or anyone

The thread title is about Baddiel's documentary about anti-semitism.

I despise Baddiel.

It's that simple & justified.

Hope that clears that up for you.

Lunar270 · 24/11/2022 07:10

Can you not just give it a rest? @beachcitygirl I'm learning a lot and after pages of others being goady and unpleasant, the thread has evolved where people are giving their accounts and experiences.

I realise I'm not a moderator (or Jewish) but out of respect, can't you just give it up? I think we get your dislike of Baddiel from page 2. It's now 22 and you're still banging on.

HRTQueen · 24/11/2022 08:07

I've rarely seen any so determined to destroy and derail a thread and to shut down conversation on a topic.

Just making the same accusations over and over again without a single piece of evidence being provided once in 22 pages.

You've made your point, not very convincingly, with no evidence. It's really glaringly obvious that you are frighteningly committed to stopping Jewish people and others from discussing our experiences of antisemitism.

You really are derailing and ruining the thread and adding nothing to it. Which I suspect is your intention.
