DH says this is gross

Bownus · 11/11/2022 17:27

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

OP posts:

Would he open the pizza wrapping, then wash his hands before touching the pizza? Course he wouldnt ffs, what a plonker he is

Onnabugeisha · 11/11/2022 19:11

Pizza should never be cut with scissors.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2022 19:11

its a game changer. I thought this was common practice that seems to appear with the arrival of children

Exactly so. Nature has unaccountably not provided mothers with an extra hand, but human ingenuity has invented scissors.

BedtimeBiscuits · 11/11/2022 19:12

I'm with your DH (but I also have OCD!).

Different implement to open the pack than to cut the pizza after cooking. And kitchen scissors go in the dishwasher after every use here, no matter what they are cutting (but the paper scissors that live in the lounge only ever cut paper and never go in the dishwasher).

Riapia · 11/11/2022 19:12

Wonder what he’d think about “vabbing “.
😁😁

clary · 11/11/2022 19:13

wow just wow at @Bitterbean washing utensils that have been put, washed, in a drawer. As I assume that must be what you do?

And also wow @Aprilx at never using scissors for food! I use scissors for food ALL the time. To cut cooked chicken, fresh herbs, olives, grapes, and yes pizza (v old MN trick).

Anyone who uses scissors like that will of course wash them when used. Like you would a knife, or any other cutlery or kitchen implement.

OP you are all good here and your DH is odd. And wrong. And what he says has as much logic as disinfecting a door handle but touching loads of other inanimate objects.

MN is well weird sometimes.

A decent dough pizza would just melt though the rack.

I don’t eat ‘decent dough’ pizza habitually though. It’s expensive. If we have pizza it’s usually very cheap frozen pizza than can be cooked on a bare wire rack, because it’s cheap. I know that’s a very anti Mumsnet thing to admit to, but there you go! Plenty of us eat cheap frozen pizza.

To be fair, there are many diarrhoea-inducing bacteria that are heat resistant

Not that heat resistant!

FrizzledFrazzle · 11/11/2022 19:19

Definitely missing the point, but ...

Bread bins are manky. Unless you are really vigilant about sweeping out any crumbs, they become a mould factory IME. Especially if you ever forget about that last stale crumpet.

Ditch the bread bin because wiping crumbs off a counter is easier and more intuitive than ferreting about at the back of a bin for the bits thst get jammed up in the corners.

I suppose the point is whether the scissors are clean when the go back in the drawer. If they're used for, say, cutting the ends of flower stems and then thrown in the drawer without being washed, then used for pizza, then I suppose he has a point.

MendaciousMabel · 11/11/2022 19:22

All I know is my life changed for the better when I started using scissors to cut a pizza it’s so much easier! I have designated pizza cutting scissors 😂

Boxofsockss · 11/11/2022 19:24

I’d have used a pizza cutter personally. Seems weird to her scissors to cut food up but I have been people do this before.

Who would do this tho? I don't understand why people are using the kitchen scissors then not washing them? Isn't that like buttering your bread then putting the buttery knife back in the drawer?

Kitchen scissors can be used for paper in my house (you better not use my fabric scissors for that! <glares>) but that doesn't really happen that often. When they have been used thus (mostly for wrapping), they are probably washed. Certainly after cutting flowers or any of the other many messy kitchen jobs they are used for.

I'd use one of my pairs of gardening scissors for trimming flowers.

Tried to post photo but couldn't get it to work...

MendaciousMabel · 11/11/2022 19:26

I’ve seen people use scissors to cut up raw chicken before now THAT is gross 😂

WrongWayApricot · 11/11/2022 19:27

Reason 127 to stay single - the vast majority of people can't wrap their heads around cross contamination and mock the people that do 🙄 Not having to wash a chopping board is more important than your partner's comfort, that's really lazy.

ReneBumsWombats · 11/11/2022 17:40

People cut pizza with scissors??

Nothing about it bothers me hygiene-wise but...scissors?

Pizza cutters exist for a reason!

Scissors are 10 times the utensil a pizza cutter is! Pizza cutters are bullshit drawer clutter with only one use, that they’re shite at. Scissors are versatile and get the job done. Bangs gavel.

Her partner could always cook and cut the pizza himself, then wash the chopping board, if he’s that bothered.

I bet he wished he had after he saw that, too late after OP has already hacked away at the dinner like it's a chain of paper dolls ffs.

WeAreTheHeroes · 11/11/2022 19:33

I've been cutting pizza with scissors for decades. I have three pairs of kitchen scissors - they go in the dishwasher like everything else. Pizza wheels are a one trick pony, scissors are so much more versatile.

Also the plastic will not have any germs on that won't be on a pair of "clean" scissors surely? And a pizza - I mean there is nothing raw on that, which would be the only concern.

Using scissors to cut raw meat and then using the unwashed scissors to cut up fresh herbs - that's gross, yes. But who would do that? Any more than anyone would use the same unwashed knife to spread jam and then mayonnise?

OwwwMuuuum · 11/11/2022 19:35

All our pizzas, whether homemade, frozen cheap or Aldi’s fanciest, get cooked on a bare wire rack and then cut with scissors. Those pizza cutters are a bit of a gimmick I think, they don’t work very well.

FormAnOrderlyQueue · 11/11/2022 19:36

girlmom21 · 11/11/2022 17:47

You can cut the pizza on the plate.
People who cut pizza with scissors are disturbed.

🤣

Erm how about just the good old fork and sharp knife to slice it 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
