DH says this is gross

Bownus · 11/11/2022 17:27

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

Well he’d hate me then I have to use scissors or knife to open plastic then cut pizza.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/11/2022 19:38

We had a pizza in an Italian restaurant last week, they gave us a pizza wheel which was the first one I've ever known to work well. But it was a thin pizza and mine didn't have any meat on it.

Scissors cut through any topping or crust easily.

MendaciousMabel · 11/11/2022 19:26

I’ve seen people use scissors to cut up raw chicken before now THAT is gross 😂

How so? Scissors are a knife-like utensil. I pick up the chicken breast, cut it WITH SCISSORS over the packet it came in.
Put scissors in hot soapy water, wash my hands and throw packaging away (raw chicken is the only meat packaging I chuck straight out rather than attempt to wash).
No chopping board to worry about.

Also the plastic will not have any germs on that won't be on a pair of "clean" scissors surely? And a pizza - I mean there is nothing raw on that, which would be the only concern.

Using scissors to cut raw meat and then using the unwashed scissors to cut up fresh herbs - that's gross, yes. But who would do that? Any more than anyone would use the same unwashed knife to spread jam and then mayonnise?

If it's a pizza that is only in plastic or the box has a window then you have the germs of the shelf stacker and any customers that picked it up, the germs of the carrier bag unless it's never been used before, and the general coughs and sneezes of passers by. I'm going to guess OP doesn't clean the shopping when she brings it home. So yeah, enjoy shelf stacker nut sack/nose pick/cough on your pizza just before you eat it, bon appetit.

A decent dough pizza would just melt though the rack.

Oh, I didn't know that. I just buy frozen ones. Or get pizza delivered.

Irridescantshimmmer · 11/11/2022 19:07

Just get yourself some kitchen scissors OP. Mine are a bright blue colour so its easy to distinguish between from my other scissors.

I cut wraps and homemade pasta with mine!😁

The use of the scissors wasnt the issue, her husband had an issue with her using them for plastic wrap but then using it for the pizza later without washing in between

girlmom21 · 11/11/2022 19:43

@FormAnOrderlyQueue don't admit that to anyone you know IRL Grin

TheWitchersWife · 11/11/2022 19:44

I had an oven pizza earlier too.
I opened the plastic with my teeth 😬

If I was making sandwiches for kids wanting different fillings I would 100% use a knife to spread butter on all bread, then jam on DS’s then wipe it on a clean bit of bread then use it to spread mayo on DD’s and PB on mine and mustard on someone else’s, all with a little bread wipe in between. Again this is without a second thought and while thinking this is normal behaviour. Otherwise you’d be using 5 knives for 5 sandwiches!

I do this, as much as I criticise my OH for the heathenness of cutting a pizza with scissors, I hold the raw chicken with a fork, then snip snip away to cut up bits into the pan.

Dont understand people not washing their scissors, we put ours in the dishwasher, they come apart (I think they're meant to anyway!!)

Gosh I don't think I could live my life in the way you must do. Do you wash your shopping before you put it away then? And do you wash your hands then never touch anything before you eat? How do you manage with a sandwich from Tesco? Unless you open it, and THEN wash your hands? Don't even start on the packet of crisps - do you eat them without touching the bag? wash your hands between each crisp? Seriously, the germs of the shelf stacker are long gone, I promise.

feellikeanalien · 11/11/2022 19:50

Ooh I never thought of cutting pizza with scissors. I think I might try that next time we have a pizza.

Slightly off topic but the more threads I read on Mumsnet the more I think I must be a really big slob. Mind you I am fairly healthy so it must be all that exposure to germs!😀

😁😁

Just had to google this. Thanks for that!😂

Oh, God, talk of cleaning shopping – is it March 2020 again? ::checks date of thread in case it’s the thread resurrection troll::

stuntbubbles · 11/11/2022 19:54

As for knives for spreading different things, you insert the dirtied knife into the slice of bread and the bread cleans it as you pull it out. I used to have a VERY small kitchen with room for perhaps 2-3 things so I know all the tricks.

Haffiana · 11/11/2022 19:55

I am old enough to remember when pizza cutters became A Thing, and we all ditched our scissors to get one. Then we all sensibly binned our pizza cutters and went back to scissors.

I see some people have completely missed out the scissors part of their pizza-cutting education, because that is the only reason to still be using a pizza cutter.

Nannytimes4 · 11/11/2022 20:00

If it came out of a box I’d have no problem.
If it was a made up one on a counter where everyone can handle it or cough and sneeze on it, the yes I’d say rinse the scissors before cutting.

By the way scissors are so much better than a pizza cutter

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/11/2022 20:02

Sometimes, if no one is around, I run about the garden with a pair of scissors, snipping away at anything that comes in range - but I would never cut a pizza with scissors that's just downright dangerous.

JinglingXmasbells · 11/11/2022 20:02

If the pizza was in a box, then plastic, that would be fine.

Plastic only? Hmmm...in theory they scissors could be contaminated but then do you wash your hands after opening any packet of anything- eg bread, biscuits, cake, - before touching the food?

WhyOY · 11/11/2022 20:05

Found this from the dog poo knife thread.

I have pizza scissors and would cut the plastic and pizza with these scissors.

Do you wash your shopping before you put it away then?

Anti bac wipe, yes.

And do you wash your hands then never touch anything before you eat?

Yes, if I'm eating with my hands. Not so bothered if I'm using cutlery.

How do you manage with a sandwich from Tesco?

I usually have a wrap or a sub and hold it by the packet as best I can. I usually have anti bac wipes with me when I'm out.

Don't even start on the packet of crisps - do you eat them without touching the bag?

I'm not that much of a crisp person tbh. I can eat them holding the packet too though. It's not hard for me.

Here's the mocking I was talking about. Just because you can’t understand how easy it is doesn't mean you have to take the piss out of people that can understand it. Just because you see a sandwich in tesco and can't fathom a way of getting it into your mouth without grabbing it with unwashed hands doesn't make you better than me. A crow could probably work it out.

People cut pizza with scissors??

Nothing about it bothers me hygiene-wise but...scissors?

Pizza cutters exist for a reason!

The kitchen scissors are the most frequently used tool in our house. We use them for most things. Would definitely use for pizza if not pre sliced.

littlepeas · 11/11/2022 20:07

I use scissors for pizza - it was a huge revelation for me, as my fingertips hyperextend a lot (which is uncomfortable) when using a pizza cutter.

I also use scissors for chicken as I can't bear touch it (hold up with a fork and snip).

I don't care if people on mumsnet think I am weird or gross.

ChocHaloTop · 11/11/2022 20:08

I would just be happy someone else had made the tea. He has too little to care about if this is a big thing.
