DH says this is gross

Bownus · 11/11/2022 17:27

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

People cut pizza with scissors??

Nothing about it bothers me hygiene-wise but...scissors?

Pizza cutters exist for a reason!

Sometimes it’s just easier!

I’ve seen people use scissors to cut up raw chicken before now THAT is gross 😂

How? If you use scissors, you can cut it into stir fry sized pieces and put back in the plastic pack ready to add to the pan. The only thing you're contaminating is the scissors, which can be washed easily. Do you know how easily bits of food get ground into chopping boards when you are slicing into them with a sharp knife. Much more sanitary to use scissors and only have to wash them and your hands.

If I needed to cut chicken I would use scissors. There is literally nothing wrong with it. People really are weird

I can't work out what is wrong with it! I use clean scissors

Anyone who is disgusted by the use of scissors to cut pizza, please never travel to Italy.
In fact, better not travel at all. You are far too fragile.

I was just going to say the same about Spain. Everyone cuts pizzas with kitchen scissors here.
So many British people are so set in their ways and so disgusted by normal things people do a different way. Apart from Americans, I've never come across another culture like it!

Exactly!

AllThingsServeTheBeam People really are and so set in their ways. It's so odd to me that so many people think their way is the only way and other people are at best wrong and at worst disgusting or weird. Such a strange insular mindset.

Peachy2005 · 12/11/2022 19:38

Depends if it’s the general kitchen scissors that gets used for parcelling and all kinds of household jobs…

We have 2 pairs of food scissors that live in the utensils drawer and go through the dishwasher regularly. If they are just used to cut a pitta bread, they’d only get a quick tap rinse. If they’re used for cutting any messy food, trimming any fat off meat, anything to do with chicken or cutting tops off sauce packs they go through the dishwasher. There’s a general scissors in an odds-and-ends drawer in kitchen and that gets used for parcelling, opening boxes etc. To cut the plastic off a pizza (if it’s plastic that has been in direct contact with supermarket shelves, I’d be slightly conflicted and probably use a sharp knife :-)

Twentyfirstcenturymumma · 12/11/2022 19:44

Scissors for slicing pizza...best thing since sliced bread

BlueMongoose · 12/11/2022 19:44

Bitterbean · 11/11/2022 17:36

If the scissors were just from the drawer and not cleaned first it is bit gross. Less so the plastic connection. But I really don't like pizza being cut with scissors. It gives me the heebies 🤢

We wash our implements before putting them in the drawers....

CaptainMum · 12/11/2022 19:46

I wouldn't think twice about doing this. And scissors are exemplary at cutting pizza. It's the only way in our house.

He's read too much MN!

DGay · 12/11/2022 20:14

Kitchen scissors are in a lot of Kitchen flatware sets with holder. They are meant to be used in kitchen for food. Cutting chicken, etc. I use for cutting chopped steak in half because we whole one is too much for me. I use for pizza, too. USA here.

IAmAReader · 12/11/2022 20:14

Emmamoo89 · 11/11/2022 18:16

I cut pizza with scissors. People who say its weird to do that are the weird ones.

exactly, I can't believe so many people are saying 'you use knives' as if you have to use knives and not scissors. Live and let live 😂Whatever is easier is the best option for me!

I have issues with fine motor movements, which increases my risk of cutting myself with a sharp knife. So it's probably safer for me to use scissors where possible rather than knives.

OP, I would probably have washed the scissors in between using them to cut the plastic and the cooked pizza so I get where your DH is coming from but OTOH I don't think it's a massive deal lol

myrtlesstrawhat · 12/11/2022 20:17

If god didn't want us to cut pizzas with scissors he'd have given us pizza cutters that work.

pinkpantherpink · 12/11/2022 20:19

I choose scissors everytime to cut pizza. Never found a pizza cutter I like or one that won't cut my fingers when sitting in the drawer

Always. Have an old pair of scissors up on my magnetic knife strip mainly for this purpose.

DGay · 12/11/2022 20:30

Go to Amazon.com and you will see lots of pizza scissors. They work better than my pizza cutter, much better.

EternalCountrygirl · 12/11/2022 20:30

your DH is right. Using the same scissors to cut the wrapping of uncooked pizza and then to slice cooked, ready to eat pizza is not hygienic no! Wash your scissors between and you’ll be fine!

DanglyThings · 12/11/2022 20:39

@ReneBumsWombats I repeatedly tell him to not do it, and he keeps doing it...

Bownus · 11/11/2022 18:14

Fucking hate our breadbin. Again, DH convinced that having bread just on counter or in cupboard is unhygienic. Glad you brought this up.

Gave up on breadbin because I swear bread went mouldy faster in the breadbin than in the cupboard. Wooden breadbin was less mouldy than the metal one I got - less air circulating? Anyway, ditched it and now just have bread in wrapper in cupboard.

Phantomb · 12/11/2022 20:47

I’m the kind of person who cuts the ends of onions, peels them, then washes the knife before chopping them.

I also take pizzas out of the boxes, start to take off the wrappers with fingers, then wash hands, then pull the pizza out without touching the wrapping. God knows where the boxes have been. I also rinse the top of cans before opening them.

I’m definitely with your DH! It’s about having an awareness of cross contamination (and I have OCD).

I have kitchen scissors for cutting the ends off green beans, spring onions, chopping up bacon or ham for pasta and chunking chicken.

Great idea to cut pizza before cooking. Never would have occurred to me. The crumbs go everywhere especially if it’s a thin one.

DanglyThings · 12/11/2022 20:39

@ReneBumsWombats I repeatedly tell him to not do it, and he keeps doing it...

Throw them out. That's objectively revolting.

NotRightNowNo · 12/11/2022 20:47

Lol, I've been using scissors to cut pizza up since the 1980s. I've not died of unsanitariness yet.
I use them for lots of other food as well. Herbs, chillies, bacon. Saves mucking a chopping board up.

MaybeSmaller · 12/11/2022 20:57

What?

Personally I wouldn't have been that bothered even for cold deli type food or sarnies (it's not as if it's been prepared by robots in a sterile clean room).

Complaining about that for pizza, which is presumably going to be heated to at least 160-170C in the oven, is ludicrous.
