DH says this is gross

Snipped open the plastic on a pizza with kitchen scissors. Then used same scissors to cut the pizza into slices. DH actually said this was “vile and unsanitary” as the plastic could have been exposed to anything.

I’ll admit that for things like this I’m on the more disgusting end of the spectrum and he’s on the more disgusted but I honestly thought this was uncontroversial?

Meant to say also, the pizza is going to be cooked in a hot oven,so that would kill off any germs that may have transferred form the scissors to the pizza.

But the scissors will be used again after the pizza has been cooked, that’s presumably the issue for OPs husband.

therealduchess · 12/11/2022 18:34

I've never heard of anybody cutting pizza with scissors tbh but it's not a bad idea now you mention it! I use a pizza cutter and would take the plastic off just by tearing it.
I don't think it's gross in the slightest! It's not like you sliced the pizza with the garden shears...

DanglyThings · 12/11/2022 18:29

Dh puts his toe nail scissors in the cutlery drawer and thinks nothing of it 😱I wouldn't be surprised if he uses them on food as well 🤢

And you allow that?

blueshoes · 12/11/2022 18:36

I'm Team Scissors. I use scissors to cut pizza, meat, herbs, chilli, paper, packaging. When I go on a self-catering holiday, I take my scissors with me. Most cottages have lousy scissors. Fiskars. It is my swiss pen knife Smile

CorvusPurpureus · 12/11/2022 18:39

I tend to take the piss, gently, out of my DM for using scissors because she regards pizza wheels as 'horribly dangerous!'.

She got one free with a Laithwaites wine order & reacted as if they'd sent her a bag of anthrax. I offered to take it off her hands & she was appalled that I would 'have that in the kitchen with the children!'.

I'm an ex chef, & 2/3 of my teenage kids have already done work experience in busy commercial kitchens full of sharp knives, blow torches...😆.

HOWEVER she's right about food scissors for pizza. Much quicker & more efficient.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2022 18:41

Yes, they'll be used again after they've been washed, exactly the same as with knives or pizza cutters. Why should that be an issue?

je11ybean · 12/11/2022 18:42

I use scissors for everything. I was just expressing to my husband how they are great for cutting chicken legs off a cooked chicken. I also use scissors for pizza, garlic bread and raw chicken breasts (when I want them cubed).

CoffeeDeprivation · 12/11/2022 18:44

I also cut the pizza with kitchen scissors. I do have a pizza cutter, which has never been used again after I tried the scissors. Honestly, so much quicker and neat. The pizza cutter drags food with it, the scissors gives you perfectly cut slices. I also it for lots of other food, particularly kids meals stuff, for simplicity, being quicker and cleaner cuts.

Someone mentioned Korean chefs up thread doing this. I didn't know this! When I first saw someone doing this, I thought it was weird. I was converted after trying it though!

Anyway, the surface of the scissors that would touch the plastic is minimum. And it would be cooked at high temp, so I doubt any bacteria on the plastic survives!

Mischance · 12/11/2022 18:46

If the scissors were just from the drawer and not cleaned first it is bit gross. ..... what!!??

You wouldn't last 5 minutes in my house!!

So you think that the scissors should be thrown out?

CoffeeDeprivation · 12/11/2022 18:50

...bacteria from the plastic.

@FallingsHowIFeel The scissors are then washed afterwards? I assume we are talking about kitchen scissors, the kind used for cutting raw chicken or whole fish, which are stronger and have a serrated bit? Not general normal scissors. And that they are washed after each use.

ScribblingPixie · 12/11/2022 18:51

Pizza scissors are the best present I ever got. I try to keep them clean but he sounds OTT.

I presume OP means....Open plastic packaging (that husband sees as dirty) with scissors. Cook pizza. Use (dirty) scissors that have been used on packaging to cut the pizza, therefore contaminating pizza.

Not an issue for me but I have a family member with OCD and this would be an issue in her house.

Pebbles16 · 12/11/2022 19:01

I am now going to definitely use scissors more. Sounds a game-changer

Dillydollydingdong · 12/11/2022 19:01

Surely use a knife to cut a pizza? I still wouldn't wash it though.

A couple of things. It just seems weird to use scissors to cut food; you use knives and cutters for that. Never occurred to me to use scissors for it. Also, I make my own pizza and what with the cheese and the toppings, I'm not sure I could cut it with scissors. I think everything would slide around. I have a pizza cutter.

I don't think there's anything unhygienic about it, assuming you haven't been cutting raw meat with the scissors or something, but it just seems so odd. Scissors are for cutting paper or sellotape, not food!

Nothing odd about it. Kitchen scissors/shears are very much a thing. They are even used in commercial kitchens by professionally trained chefs. I own 5 pair. None of them have ever been used to cut anything outside the kitchen.

Hungrymumoftwo · 12/11/2022 19:05

Bitterbean · 11/11/2022 17:36

If the scissors were just from the drawer and not cleaned first it is bit gross. Less so the plastic connection. But I really don't like pizza being cut with scissors. It gives me the heebies 🤢

Sorry used the wrong quote above... 3rd time lucky 🤣🤣🤞

Usually we wash utensils before putting them in the drawer. Do you wash every utensil that you take out to use? We've got specific kitchen scissors though, if they were out of the toolbox I'd probably think twice 🤣

Thatboymum · 12/11/2022 19:05

I always do this and I have quite extreme ocd I cut the pizza pack open then I use the same scissors to cut perfect pizza slices and then I pop it in the oven and wash the scissors I thought that was norm 😂

MamaKitty · 12/11/2022 19:11

AnnieSnap · 12/11/2022 18:14

Eww, scissors to cut food 🤮 I don’t know why that’s my reaction, but ewww! I use a knife. Scissors for packaging, knife to cut the pizza.

Kitchen scissors/shears are a thing! How are so many people oblivious & weirded out by this fact?!?

I have several pair of dedicated kitchen scissors. They do not get used for crafts or anything else, only on food. They get washed after every use just like every other utensil & tool in my kitchen.

The people assuming she used dirty craft scissors on her food & isn't going to wash them afterwards are making me question how gross their kitchens are

Howdoyoulikeyourtea · 12/11/2022 19:13

I don’t understand why people think you wouldn’t wash the scissors after each use? Don’t you wash your knives or pizza cutters after each use?

I'm another scissors user, for pizzas, chicken, ham, chives, sandwiches if they have meat in and won’t cut easily with the butter spreading knife etc etc

Try it, it’s a game changer.

Dontwanttoberudeorwastetime · 12/11/2022 19:19

Anyone who is disgusted by the use of scissors to cut pizza, please never travel to Italy.
In fact, better not travel at all. You are far too fragile.

PassThePringles · 12/11/2022 19:22

Having read about your dh thinking bread bins are cleaner than out on the counter.. My counter gets cleaned many times daily.... If I had a bread bin... 🤔 Probably as often as I clean through all my drawers. So long as it's covered, it's clean but I'd assume eventually tiny mites would emigrate to a bread bin?! Besides the point but which way up do you store mugs in a cupboard? I had an argument with my brother, he says upside down to keep dust out, I say upright as the shelf inevitably gets dusty and the mugs are used daily so wouldn't get a build up of dust in them 🤷🏼‍♀️ my mugs are cleaned daily, my shelves... Monthly. Perhaps.

Pizza cutter means also have to dirty a chopping board rather than straight to plate then cut with scissors for a truly lazy Friday tea

I've used kitchen scissors to cut pizza before. Works better than pizza cutter at times. I would have done the same as you.
