Boy George on I'm a celebrity

It seems this has outraged a lot of people due to his previous conviction of false imprisonment.
I am aware that Gino D'Acampo spent 2 years in prison for a burglary on Paul Young's home, yet he's very popular, also appeared on and won the show in 2009, and people seem to have forgotten his crime.

YY @tiggergoesbounce Hancock the hypocrite who told everyone else not to kill Granny while shoving people with Covid into care homes
As did Nicola Sturgeon's government. They were all working from advice from scientists. Appalling as Hancock is I doubt he deliberately tried to kill people.

Dave20 · 07/11/2022 23:11

I think every year, they need atleast one big name. Boy George is the biggest name this year.
It’s stange though how they select the celebrities. You have people that are actually big celebrities and then get other who appeared once on a reality tv show.

Like Jake Quickenden? He didn’t win the X Factor but got a place on I’m a Celebrity. He’s hardly a celebrity.

Do the celebrities ask to go on it or do ITV ask them?

Obviously they go in for the pay cheque too.

Dave20 · 07/11/2022 23:18

Hancock is a disgrace. He told everyone to follow the rules during the lockdown.
Whilst he was having a full blown affair with an also married woman.
Not to mention giving PPE contracts to his mates for billions of tax payers money.

They've done very well getting Boy George, Mike Tindall and Matt Hancock really

Define "well"?

I honestly can't see how itv and the platform they've inexplicably got given the drivel they put out can be seen to be doing "well" with this. "Well" by who?

Big pop star fine (though I'm sad he thinks he needs to do this).
Mike Tindall as far as I'm concerned shouldn't be exploiting his vaguely royal position or profiting from this.
And as for Hancock I think it's a huge insult to all viewers (who complied throughout Covid )of their channel to subject them to the pathetic attempts of this man to carve himself some sort of new career under the flimsy guise of dyslexia awareness. Would the Houses of Parliament not be a great platform to raise issues if MH genuinely genuinely gave a sh** about anyone but himself?

I don't think they've done "well" I think they're creating a medieval level of programme half hosted by an entitled , unapologetic, drink driving twerp...

I'm probably throwing fuel into the fire here but I've been reading all these posts and I now feel I should comment. I've been friends with the O'Dowd family for almost 40 years - I'm mid fifties. I've watched George's fame rise and fall and experienced his families sadness, distraught, anger, despair through the decades.
What you read in the media wasn't the whole story. I was with his sister the night he got arrested.
It was not as clear cut as was reported. He was in the depth of addiction and far more went on before that dreadful night. What he did was despicable without a doubt and he knows it. He went to prison and served his time. He had to be moved due to treatment from other inmates. He always admitted that what he did was abhorrent. I was at his court case.
He has spent many years in remorse, addiction recovery and finding his faith in Buddhism. Which will keep him in recovery I believe. Look at his calmness last night through meditation. His brother says it's because he was so used to wet holidays in Ireland as a kid!
He deserves the same respect given to Ant who I believe drank/drug drove many times before he was caught. George can't drive so he was never on the road under influence.
He has recovered with the help of his family and friends, NA and the Buddhist faith.
My daughter and son have known him since they were born and adore him. My daughter is best friends with his niece.
He is a mentor to young gay people and contributes generously to many many charities. He helps young addicts.
He is not as wealthy as people think. Last couple of years he has had his house renovated and work had to stop a few times for financial reasons.
He is an amazing son (now) to his mum and sibling to his 4 brothers and 1 sister, plus many many relatives.
I was out with his sister recently and she said he was in Aus but I just thought it was for a DJ gig!
Yes George's crime was awful but it wasn't as clear cut as reported and he has paid his dues. ❤️☮️🙏

Don't like him being famous and being on a show to promote himself.

Start a thread on MN to perpetuate the chatterati.

Makes sense to me.

youcantry · 08/11/2022 12:20

@FuriousCheekyFucker not interested in doing that. Just wanted to state facts.

youcantry · 08/11/2022 12:31

Also, to put out a balanced trans retort against a person. George is a wonderful man who never professes to be a woman. His family are the closest and most lovely I've I've met. His family and mine are friends. Everyone here in SE London know and support. I hope that if you have a family member struggling with addiction, you would help and support.
Look at George 12+ yrs clean and sober and reinventing himself? . Is it not better to help to get these people to be well and to be functional, product able people??

Whilst burglary is a horrible crime and it can be very upsetting to the victim I don't believe it is anywhere near as bad as imprisoning and beating a much younger and more vulnerable person!

Gino was a much younger man at the time, 20/21 ish, served time and publicly apologised to the victim of his crime, who accepted this. Fortunately most of the items stolen were also retrieved. He has publicly spoken about the crime, expressed regret, and hasn't suggested that it was the victims own fault that it happened.

Boy George was in his mid 40s at the time and he imprisoned AND beat a younger male escort. He didn't plead guilty and infact suggested that the red welts from beating the main with a metal chain were caused by people his positive instead. He was more bothered that the conviction would prevent him from being able to perform in certain countries around the world at the time. He has also had other brushes with the law regarding drugs possession and falsely reporting a burglary for example.

So whilst both have committed and served prison time for their crimes I do believe one of those crimes is far worse than the other tbh.

💯 this.

I think Ant was over the limit from the night before, wasn't he? It's not like he downed a pint of vodka and then hopped in his Corsa.

Doesn't make it right but it does change things.

youcantry · 08/11/2022 14:25

@Snoozer11 do you really think that was the first time he had drink and drove? - I very very very much doubt it when he had a drink and prescription drug problem. I would bet heavily that he had done it many times before.

Penguinsaregreat · 08/11/2022 20:37

I’m actually sick and tired of all this “He has served his time” crap.
If someone assaulted my child I can 100% tell you I would not be saying this. I would quite happily watch the fucker die. I’m positive the majority of people feel the same. Mike Tyson was once doing some speech at a posh hotel near me. I went apeshit. That bastard is a rapist who bit a man’s ear off not to mention a wife beater.
I can’t remember if the talk he was doing went ahead I was disgusted that anyone would consider going.
As I said I don’t watch the programme and everyone who does is helping people like BG sustain their fame.

Did you actually see the video ? He was absolutely pie eyed, he was still drunk from several months before!
