In thinking my manager is hugely insensitive for wearing these things into work?

Our department head is very young and glamorous and is fairly new to the company. We know her salary range as it was stated alongside the job advert (a six figure salary whilst the rest of the team are lucky to earn a quarter of that). Every day she swans in to the office like she’s dressed for the catwalk, different designer handbags (the very obvious types - think Gucci, LV etc), Rolex watch, Cartier bracelets, designer belts and shoes. Not to mention the perfect nails, hair and everything else that we just cannot afford these days.

Meanwhile our large team is underpaid and overworked. The recent financial climate means many of us are struggling to heat our homes, worrying about mortgage/rental price hikes and generally having to really cut back. We are all office based and this is something we talk about frequently in conversation, so she’s completely aware of this. She’s previously had the cheek to say that we are all feeling the pinch given the financial situation, which is an absolute insult when she rubs her wealth in our faces 5 days a week.

AIBU in feeling completely incensed by this and wondering how on earth she can think it’s appropriate?! The whole team are upset with this and considering raising it with HR.

What a load of nonsense.

accentdusoleil · 20/10/2022 21:46

Do you have a dress code / policy ? As long as she is respecting that , then it's none of your business .

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 20/10/2022 21:46

Be careful ....HR might put you all in a hideous uniform as a way of sorting it out

You'd all still moan then!

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 20/10/2022 21:46

You need to grow up, you sound pathetic and jealous. HR aren't going to force her to stop wearing them simply because you're jealous.

lentilly · 20/10/2022 21:46

I think its really sad you're all spending your time discussing her appearance and not her ability to do her job.

DesMoulinsRouge · 20/10/2022 21:46

Yes go to HR and when you do come and tell us the response.

NCHammer2022 · 20/10/2022 21:47

I’m sure HR will react really well to you all going to tell them how you’ve been bitching about your boss together behind her back.

If she’s good at her job, suck it up. If she’s not, look for a new job.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 20/10/2022 21:47

Discussing her appearance in a group

Akin to bullying.

HappyMeal564 · 20/10/2022 21:47

But if she came in still on a six figure salary but with cheap clothes, hair not styled and nails not done you'd all be OK? You all sound petty and jealous

luxxlisbon · 20/10/2022 21:47

This is insane. You can’t possibly believe everyone in your department feels like this and thinks it’s reasonable to go to HR because someone has nicer things and more money than you in the office 😂

Fillingsforever · 20/10/2022 21:47

I know how you feel. My boss has the fucking temerity to wear actual clothes to the workplace whilst we have to parade around in underwear. How dear she make it obvious that she earns more than us and is in a place of seniority. It's just a smack in the face to all of us who work hard swinging round a pole.

MouldyCheeseandBiscuits · 20/10/2022 21:48

Put her in sackcloth and ashes

lentilly · 20/10/2022 21:48

Yup..tread carefully OP

I think before this happened to me I would have said YABU. But since the same thing happened to me - the multi millionaire boss kept leaving his Prada backpack around while telling people in meetings that he didn’t think anyone should get a pay rise to help with the cost of living crisis - and know how it feels now, I’ll say YANBU. It’s shit.

Thank you!!! It’s all well and good saying it doesn’t matter as an outsider, but I think most people would feel the same way if they experienced it themselves

Haffiana · 20/10/2022 21:48

You’ve missed the point. It’s not her salary that’s the issue, it’s her insensitively showcasing her wealth in front of us in a very tasteless and excessive way

Do you understand that there are people on here who do not have jobs at all? Don't you think you should stop boasting about how you have one? How utterly insensitive.

Someone should report you to MNHQ.

Leakygutter · 20/10/2022 21:48

Why don't you direct your energies to finding out how she's achieved what she has and have a go yourself?

There's no point complaining if you're notneven prepared to try.

OneCup · 20/10/2022 21:48

Do you also stop tesla drivers on the street and berate them for their choice of cars?

CrampMcBastard · 20/10/2022 21:48

It’s tasteless, but not exactly something that anything can be done about.

The female CFO at my employer received £400-£500kpa remuneration and would dress in a glamorous but understated way. You’d need to know what you were looking at IYSWIM. Not obvious at all.

I once mentioned to a colleague that I liked her Porsche boxter she drove to work. They thought it was sweet I didn’t realise that was her “dress down” car that she drove to work and left the proper car at home.

Is your manager quite young? Immature? Or is having money a new novelty to her?

roarfeckingroarr · 20/10/2022 21:49

Petty, petty jealousy.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 20/10/2022 21:49

My boss came into work today with a takeaway coffee from Costa and I can only afford a jar of Lidl basic coffee. I'm going to report him to HR first thing tomorrow.

KitchiHuritAngeni · 20/10/2022 21:49

Maybe if you spent more time working and less time gossiping about someone's clothes you would have been considered for her job.

You could always give her a tattie sack as she comes in each day, she can wear that and you'll all feel better.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 20/10/2022 21:50

You think she should only use her fancy handbags at the weekend? She should buy her work stuff from Next, because.... you do? I hate so-called designer gear (isn't everything designed?) and flagrant displays of wealth, but she can afford expensive stuff and you can't. She earns a lot more than you. It's unfair, but it's capitalism. Why couldn't you do her job?

Hibernationsetting · 20/10/2022 21:50

Please report it to HR.

a) they could do with a laugh

b) the ensuing shit storm on your heads would be so deserved. You sound horrid.

HRD2be · 20/10/2022 21:50

You sound bitter and jealous OP.

I work in HR. I would not be judging her if you complained but I would be judging you.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 20/10/2022 21:50

I’m ‘HR’ and I’d wonder what you’d expect me to do? Would there be a prescribed list of shops and/or brands they could wear?

I work with people who earn x4 my (higher tax bracket) salary and I don’t bitch and moan that they can have Cartier watches and £££ handbags. Them then breaks.
