To think Molton Brown is horrible

Molton Brown appears to be a luxury brand? But I think the products smell and feel cheap and synthetic. Do people actually like their products or is it just a status thing?

You’ll just get a queue of people on here trying to sound nonchalant about a product which is established as being rather good for many people.

but go on then, for all those who think MB is a bit rubbish. What’s a good luxury alternative scented shower gel or body wash then?

Monoi de Tahiti by Yves Rocher

DSGR · 12/10/2022 22:35

I love MB. The shower gels are thick and lovely and the scent stays on my skin for ages. Definitely a step up from
Bayliss and Harding!

I like Russian Leather, not so much the other scents. I’m using Skandinavisk’s Skog at the moment, which I really like.

Two of my favourites too! Skog is absolutely fantastic, especially nice in winter, but always fresh and feels like a real treat.

I do buy Molton Brown regularly, but only some of the products, Mesmerising Oud, Russian Leather, Festive Frankincense and Allspice etc. These ones have strong - but not overpowering - scents and last a long, long time. The shower gel is thick and you only need a really small amount.

Many of the other scents are very meh. Nothing fiery about the pink peppercorn etc.

I also rate their Alba White Truffle hand treatment and their Papyrus Reed shampoo and conditioner.

@listsandbudgets Thankyou for those suggestions, i will check them out. If i can get better value for not too much loss in quality then that only makes sense. Im definitely not a brand snob, if i find a cheaper one i like i will definitely buy that instead.

hattie43 · 12/10/2022 23:12

I use them all the time , my all time favourite is Templetree.

Asparagoose · 12/10/2022 19:43

It’s tested on animals. So I suppose it’s ok if you feel comfortable using stuff that has been squirted in rabbits eyes.

No it's not . That's one of their key selling points it it's suitable for vegans

AlwaysLatte · 12/10/2022 23:14

I agree - far too overpowering a smell and it dries my hands out.

AutumnScream · 12/10/2022 23:27

sandytooth · 12/10/2022 21:36

I know this isn't how they do it and actually animal testing is cruel and involves putting in eyes and stuff but I am getting a mental image of them giving a chimpanzee a bubble bath or something and asking its opinion.

I fully support this form of animal testing lol

noodlezoodle · 13/10/2022 00:05

Another one who got addicted to the Templetree on holiday and now love the memories it brings back. I think they're good quality in that a little goes a long way and the fragrance lasts really well.

I also like Noble Isle but if you don't like MB you might not like that either!

Dh and stayed at a fancy hotel for a milestone birthday. Part of my treat for him and they had Molton Brown products very nicely packaged for us. Unfortunately we didn't think very much of them. Brought them home as we used what we had brought with us. Sat in a drawer for years until I finally binned them.

Asparagoose · 12/10/2022 21:28

MB is owned by Kao, a Japanese company which tests on animals. If you buy MB your money is going to Kao for them to spend on torturing bunny rabbits.

@Asparagoose I've reported you. Molton Brown do NOT test on animals so you are being disingenuous in your posts (whatever your agenda is). Get your facts straight.

Should have donated them.

RealBecca · 13/10/2022 02:10

It's not suitable for vegans. It has some vegan formulas. Which means it as a company is not a fully vegan formula company and as its owned by a parent company that tests on animals it is not suitable for vegans.

Loads of companies say "vegan friendly formula" but either animal test themselves or sell in places where animal testing is required or are owned by a parent company that is one of those things. No vegans are buying those products (certainly not intentially). That marketing is purely there so people buy those products as gifts for vegans (who then pass them on or throw them in the bin, because in this day and age especially- fuck animal testing).

RealBecca · 13/10/2022 02:16

@Hillcrest2022 @Asparagoose is correct. KAO animal test. KAO own Molton Brown

YANBU - it is exactly like washing up liquid!

MargotChateau · 13/10/2022 06:32

Glorified washing up liquid with nasty synthetic scents.

Oh I didn’t know this- someone brought me a gift set, won’t be using now

Any soapy gift comes with no thought anyway, I generally put them in the charity bags that come to the doorstep

QuebecBagnet · 13/10/2022 07:30

I used to love it but 15 plus years ago I’m sure it was very different. The scents aren’t as good now and the actual texture is different.

ive moved onto Treacle Moon. Cheap as chips in supermarkets but I love the ginger one.

HopeSpringsInfernal · 12/10/2022 22:25

Another vote for L'Occitaine Almond Shower oil

The Almond Oil Shampoo and conditioner are fab too. Fortunately you don’t need a lot and only wash my hair once a week, dirty minger that I am, so the bottles last a while.

gretr · 13/10/2022 07:35

Yes, I agree the Molton Brown stuff smells synthetic to me. I use Aesop for soap (it lasts for ages), and due to sensitive/dry skin, I stick to Aveeno or Sanex for shower gel.

ScarlettSunset · 13/10/2022 07:41

I'm with you. I don't like them. I always call it Mouldy Brown....

Asparagoose · 13/10/2022 07:47

I do have my facts straight. Molton Brown is owned by Kao. Kao tests on animals.

It’s like when people boycotted The Body Shop because it was sold to L’Oreal which tests on animals. People boycott Molton Brown because it’s owned by Kao which tests on animals. The actual product you buy may not be tested on animals but the company which gets your money tests on animals on a regular basis. Vote with your wallet and choose cruelty free cosmetics from a cruelty free company.

Oh yes Noble Isle is a nice alternative to Molton Brown

newnamethanks · 13/10/2022 07:53

Noble Isle Rhubarb. Smells divine and feels nice on skin.
