To think Molton Brown is horrible

Molton Brown appears to be a luxury brand? But I think the products smell and feel cheap and synthetic. Do people actually like their products or is it just a status thing?

I do have my facts straight. Molton Brown is owned by Kao. Kao tests on animals.

It’s like when people boycotted The Body Shop because it was sold to L’Oreal which tests on animals. People boycott Molton Brown because it’s owned by Kao which tests on animals. The actual product you buy may not be tested on animals but the company which gets your money tests on animals on a regular basis. Vote with your wallet and choose cruelty free cosmetics from a cruelty free company.

You said it was tested on animals. It isn't. I get what you are saying re the parent company and it's given me pause for thought so thank you. But that isn't what your initial post said.

As an aside do you know how come they are leaping bunny approved if their parent company do animal testing? Just wondering how that works.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 13/10/2022 08:09

I quite like their shower gels, I like the fragrances and they are thick and last for ages. The smell also lingers in a good wya. I have sensitive skin and it's one of the few brands I can use. Ironically I can also use B&H, they don't smell as good and aren't as thick as MB though. I also like L'Occiitane and Philosophy. I have to choose what doesn't make my skin break out and bleed so whether they are tested on animals (MB aren't) or not I have to choose something that I've tested on me as first priority.

Choconut · 13/10/2022 08:19

We stayed at Rick Stein's hotel once and they had them, I thought they smelt horrid.

Brands that were purchased by parent companies which test on animals can still have Leaping Bunny status if they promise to operate as stand-alone subsidiaries with their own supply chains. So you can be the worst animal testing company in the world but still run a subsidiary which is technically cruelty free. Then take the profits from that subsidiary and spend it on doing god knows what to animals.

I won’t give a single penny of my money to any company that tests on animals, and people need to know how they’re trying to pull the wool over their eyes! I boycotted The Body Shop for years and only recently went back when L’Oreal sold it to Natura which is cruelty free. I will continue to boycott Molton Brown for as long as it’s owned by Kao.

sandytooth · 13/10/2022 08:50

@Asparagoose Thank you, I shall be more careful with my purchasing decisions now I know that. They could basically just share research with a subsidiary that does animal test then? If so that is a very sneaky loophole.

I prefer L'Occitaine as more natural. MB are very synthetic smelling to me.

Agree. MB smells horrible in my opinion, too strong and not pleasant.

pocketvenuss · 13/10/2022 09:41

@Asparagoose you remain so calm and pleasant in the face of done horribly aggressive posts (@Hillcrest2022). Thank you for educating us. It is indeed underhand fir companies to claim animal testing free when the parent company (who then shared research ) freely tests on animals.

user53852098 · 13/10/2022 09:45

If people get these as unwanted gifts a lot of the doorstep charity bags accept them, I put all of my unopened cosmetic and soap gifts into them.

Yes thank you. I genuinely had no idea they were allowed to do that and still get the leaping bunny.

@pocketvenuss Is this a passive aggressive comment to me? Why don't you be bold and speak directly to me about disagreeing with my post. That would be a lot more healthy.

JulietDorney · 14/10/2022 07:49

They do have a Royal Warrant so someone posh likes them :)

JulietDorney · 14/10/2022 07:53

@Arnaquer I think L'Occitaine tries to give the impression of being natural, but they aren't at all. Their products are still full of synthetic chemicals. And I'd put them in the 'over priced' range as much as MB.

Also, MB has at least 20 shower gels all with very different smells.
Some are awful but others aren't.
There are a couple that I really like and a bottle lasts me around 6 months.

pocketvenuss · 14/10/2022 08:12

@Hillcrest2022 oh not at all. Nothing passive aggressive about it. Pretty straight in your face I thought.

pocketvenuss · 14/10/2022 08:14

@Hillcrest2022 you have illustrated exactly my point. Unlike @sandytooth who remains calm and resounds like an adult, you launch into reactive and emotive replies.

KimberleyClark · 14/10/2022 08:17

On the other hand, you can take bottles and jars back to L’Occitane shops for recycling, they provide refills of certain products and certain products you can actually refill in their shops. They also sell reusable refillable pump bottles.

it isn't really that expensive, you can usually buy it for about £14, it's only this time of the year it's expensive for the unwanted gift market, I would never buy soap for a gift as you need to check you like the smell

The 99p Aldi version is even cheaper 😉

Weepachu · 14/10/2022 22:53

Agree. I used to like them, there’s an orange and something one which isn’t too bad. But I got the Jasmine & Sun Rose shower gel in last year’s Cult Beauty advent calendar and its gross. Only just finishing it up now. Has a strong civet (urine) type scent. I’ve had £1 shower gels that smell far nicer.

Eurydice84 · 14/10/2022 22:53

Howeverdoyouneedme · 12/10/2022 19:22

I don’t think they smell very nice. They also seem a bit early 00s/low grade spa vibes.

This!

MuddyLuddy · 15/10/2022 10:11

So out of interest : What is everyone's favourite shower gel ? ( Doesn't have to be an expensive one if yours is cheap as chips ! )

woodhill · 15/10/2022 11:41

The Elemis ones are nice like the Frangipani scent

ConsuelaHammock · 15/10/2022 12:15

For people with more money than sense.

ChessieFL · 15/10/2022 12:37

I love the rhubarb and rose hand cream.

I didn’t know about the parent company though, will think twice about buying from them again.

Anywhere else do a nice rhubarb scented hand cream?!

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 15/10/2022 12:39

MB makes my skin itch and the perfumes are not pleasant. I much prefer L’Occitane.

OpheIia · 15/10/2022 12:51

I also have the rhubarb hand cream @ChessieFL and it's small enough for my handbag. Though I quite like the Holika Holika hand creams at the moment, but haven't managed to find rhubarb anywhere.

They had a nice ginger bubble bath, but I don't buy anything from there really. Though it's quite good for gift sets. I prefer Neal's Yard or Lush.

pocketvenuss · 15/10/2022 16:33

L'Occitane group also owns Melvita, Eborian and Sol Brazil amongst others. All nice products. Ethical company.
