What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

2 slices - that’s a portion to me. Toast comes in pairs. I’d never have just one slice of toast , so if someone said ‘a round of toast’ I’d be expecting 2 slices!

If you ask for a round of toast for yourself at a B&B, for example, you'll get 2 slices, each cut in half.

I think there must be people who think it's like a round of drinks (ie a set of them, in the case the set being 2, 4 or 6 depending on size oof toaster)

Moving away from the trad dictionary use, where is causes confusion, isn't useful language evolution, and I hope it's not a fad that takes on (see ruination of useful word "stayction" by using it for 'holiday in UK' rather than its original sense of 'stay at home and act like you're on holiday'

A round of toast cannot be 1 slice, otherwise it would surely be a slice and not a round.

Maybe read the thread and see the many many posts explaining how a round is one.

I am having soup for my dinner today with 2 rounds of bread. As in 2 slices from a loaf.

I live in Staffordshire and I am 32. If I said a round to anyone I know they would give me 1.

It's just an unspecified amount of toast, like a round of drinks is not any specific number of drinks. it's a drink per person, but for toast you can be a bit more varied, one person might have one half, one person might have two, so a round is just a quick glance at who the toast is for and allocate 1.6 slices per person and make that amount, rounded up obviously.

Alternatively however many slices go in one toaster, 2 or 4, and call that a round as in 'this is all I'm doing so ration it out accordingly.'

Um, no it's not. It's one slice, as per the dictionary definition. It's a totally different thing from a round of drinks. The word round, in this situation, doesn't have the same meaning and can't be compared. Just as it can't be compared with 'I'm popping round to my mates house' or 'that ball is round'.

I’ve only ever heard it used to mean one slice. There are lots of synonyms in English. People generally eat toast one slice at a time.

So in your view "round" is synonymous with "slice"?

Round is synonymous with slice. I’m also from Staffordshire @elrider. My parents were from further north and we didn’t use the term at home but a lot of people I knew did and always to mean a slice.

A round where I’m from means a slice - so 1 piece of bread. If you want more you say 2 rounds, or 3 rounds…

My home dictionary definition also has it as singular, and plural pieces of toast listed as 'rounds'
