What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

Totally does

Totally doesn't

Ineedaduvetday · 09/10/2022 20:25

Why. A round means two slices of toast.

And again... It doesn't.

DilemmaDelilah · 09/10/2022 21:25

I think a round of toast is one slice. Toasters weren't invented when toast was, so it is silly (in my opinion) to use a 2 slice serving as an example of a round. My husband thinks it is 2 slices (but he is wrong!)

HumourReplacementTherapy · 09/10/2022 14:51

One is a slice
Two is a round
Three is greedy

^ this. Have worked at a cafe where it was 2 slices, & also always this when I’ve been a customer at hotels, cafes etc

I thought this was a common/known thing, but maybe ordering toast in a cafe is a bit old fashioned these days

I think it's 2, because otherwise you'd just say a slice of toast.
but strangely, if someone said a round of sandwiches i'd assume they meant 1 sandwhich.

But that’s still two slices of bread….

mintywinter · 09/10/2022 21:43

2 slices. Because 1 = a slice of toast.

elrider · 09/10/2022 21:43

I've just read through 8 pages to see if there's anyone like me but it seems not. So let me be the first to say I've never heard of a round of toast, or sandwiches, or really anything except drinks in a pub! I'd be so interested to know if it's regional, or possibly age-related? I've lived in two very different parts of the UK, for what it's worth.

InsertPunHere · 09/10/2022 21:52

It was always one slice for my nan who made the toast under the eye-level gas grill of the cooker. And you were being fussy if you wanted it done on both sides.

A round was cut from a bloomer, toasted and butteres and cut in half.

A round of drinks has a completely different etymology.

MangosteenSoda · 09/10/2022 21:52

I don’t think I’ve ever said ‘a round’ of anything apart from alcoholic drinks 😳However, I think it’s very subjective (the least precise measurement ever).

For me, bread served with a meal eg. bread and butter with fish and chips, or toast with a cooked breakfast: 1 slice = 1 round.

Toast as a stand-alone: 2 slices = 1 portion = 1 round.

In sandwich form: 2 slices makes 1 sandwich = 1 round.

Just say slices/sandwiches and save rounds for the pub.

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 09/10/2022 21:54

I think in terms of making toast, cutting diagonally and putting in a today rack so a round would be the two halves.

I live in Lancashire and am 43

Very interesting reading everyone’s responses. I find the etymology of words and phrases fascinating. It’s not actually a phrase I grew up with, we always just said however many slices we want.

I guess it could he regional but I’ve lived in 5 different areas of the UK, and my parents are from the north and south and neither use the phrase.

Clearly it’s not related to toasters as my husband thinks! 😆

I agree with the comment about toast racks - I hate cold toast, it must be buttered hot but that’s probably a whole other debate.

I’m going to stick with my original assumption that 1 slice = 1 round. But it’s seems it’s 50:50!

A round of toast is one slice of bread.
A round of sandwiches is two slices of bread.

Mamai90 · 10/10/2022 01:35

I'm Irish and here a round means a slice. We would never say a slice of bread or a slice of toast It's always a round. I'm actually aghast that it could mean two slices to someone not from these parts!

Every day is a school day!

I loooooove cold toast. Buttered post-coldness so the butter stays on the top of the bread. 😋 One of the things I like about staying in hotels. I am too impatient to wait for it to go cold at home!!!

ZuzuSusu · 10/10/2022 03:01

Ooh I'm surprised but I think I'm in the minority, I would have thought between 2 and 4 pieces (I have a 4 slice toaster) buttered, cut diagonally and put on a plate "for the group".

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 10/10/2022 03:05

2 pieces is a round, 1 piece is a slice.

BomboChipolata · 10/10/2022 03:58

1 slice. Anyone saying 2 is evidence of why some people shouldn’t get to vote. And who says slice of toast?

Aprilx · 10/10/2022 04:12

A round of toast is a serving of toast, so two slices. If it were one it would just be a slice, it wouldn’t need a second word. I have never heard of a round of sandwiches.

BalonzIsASurreyName · 10/10/2022 04:14

2 slices, surely ?

Rosehugger · 10/10/2022 04:28

A slice of toast but made with Blackpool Milk Roll. 😁

Rosehugger · 10/10/2022 04:31

For me, a round of toast = used interchangeably with slice.

Round of sandwiches = two slices of bread with a filling.

wombat1a · 10/10/2022 05:29

2 for sure, a round when talking about going somewhere and there and back again, i.e. two journeys, once out and one back.

ZestFest · 10/10/2022 05:33

From the North Midlands - a "round" of bread is one slice. Never been any confusion.
