What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

Can't be arsed to read 10 pages but can I say Liz Truss is toast or is that not in the spirit ?

Elvis toast is a thing apparently a man who I love unconditionally ...

Crikey 10 pages on toast already maybe I should start a thread called The Full English Breakfast reckon that could get to 100 😂

😂 Yeah it’s surprised me too! A Full English Breakfast debate would definitely take longer though because toast is just one aspect of a Full English…

I've learnt that I'm wrong though thanks guys 🤣

Haha me too, such through explanations! I have seen the error of my ways.

When I do next go into a greasy spoon for a fry up I won't be able to resist checking what they think, though!

Plus the diverts into full Scottish, Irish, mushrooms, tomatoes, hash browns - posh vs greasy spoon, bubble and squeak, how much should you pay, baked beans yes or no and in pot or not , drink accompaniments, smashed avocados - almost infinite scope for discussion.

SlowingDownAndDown · 10/10/2022 19:08

Smashed avocados? Smashed avocados? @vera99. It reminds me of that story about Peter Mandelson, but as the full English doesn’t include mushy peas either, I’m just baffled

Muddywoof · 10/10/2022 19:14

In the three places I've worked that have served toast, asking for a round of toast would give you two slices.

I'm worried about a thread divert and can't be arsed to start one and that was a hat tip to the younger folk that understand all this new-fangled nonsense and are probably cardiovascular aware. That said avocados like cocaine are subject to south American gangsterism even without considering the air miles. Yes, it was when he was MP for Hartlepool and mistook mushy peas for guacamole in a chip shop I seem to remember.

As long as you don't expect more than one round of toast anywhere near where I live you'll be sound

Who buys rounds of toast? Is that at some weird Wetherspoons breakfast or something?

NoDairyNoProblem · 10/10/2022 21:19

I had a round of toast at The Ivy yesterday - 2 slices there.

Caterinaballerina · 10/10/2022 21:21

All I can think of is dinner ladies!

vera99 · 10/10/2022 21:22

A round of golf whilst 18 or sometimes 9 holes is just a single 'game' so I'm saying one slice.

If it's actually down on their menu as 2 slices you'll have to tell them they're wrong 😉

😂 Ha no it was just ‘toast and preserves’ but two slices on a posh toast rack. It was all my hungover stomach could handle 😳

I am actually going to actively look at breakfast menus from here on out to see if toast is down as served as rounds or slices 🤣

@budgiegirl is so invested in this thread replying to everyone, it's really tickling me that someone would bother this much about toast GrinGrinGrin

Fascinating
What part of the country is this?

Midlands. As in Birmingham and the Black Country. Not sure I heard it before moving here but can't be sure. My interpretation is that it means a verbal barrage of the word"fuck" rather than saying he is going to fuck us all for this transgression.

Galaktoboureko · 10/10/2022 22:41

SlowingDownAndDown · 10/10/2022 17:10

I have to say @Galaktoboureko it was possibly the greatest get out of gaol free card I’ve ever seen.

Indeed it may have been. 😂

I admit after some googling that I may have been wrong about it being like a round of drinks and it seems as if the truthful meaning is a slice. But I think many people misuse it as it's common to say things like "a round of bacon sarnies" etc.

ThePenguinIsDrunk · 10/10/2022 22:45

A round is a slice. One round or two? = 1 or 2 slices?

MasterBeth · 10/10/2022 23:15

One slice of bread cut in half.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/10/2022 23:29

It should just be 'toast', with a choice of bread; the quantity will be a rack which is usually 6 triangular half slices but they should offer more if you eat it all.

Unless it's got a breakfast bar with DIY toast where the quantity is in practice determined by the slowness of the toaster and the number of other guests wanting some, so you give up and eat pastries instead.

MaryShelley1818 · 10/10/2022 23:35

A round of toast is 2 slices
A slice of toast is.....well a slice of toast

I worked in hotels and restaurants for years when I was younger.
