What is ‘a round of toast’?

If someone says ‘a round of toast’ how many slices of bread would you assume that to be?

I’ve often heard people talk about rounds of toast but I’ve never actually known what a round is. I’ve always assumed it to mean 1 slice of bread. I thought a round was just another way of saying a slice.

My husband thinks a round of toast is two slices of bread because you can fit two slices in the toaster so one round of toasting yields two slices.

Now that does make sense but what about people who have a 4 slice toaster? My husband thinks people with a 4 slice toaster have 4 slices in their round. But I’m not sure that’s correct as you often hear about people having ‘2 rounds of toast’. No one would eat 8 slices, even 4 slices is a lot surely?

Maybe it should be like 'a round of drinks' - so one slice for everyone who says yes. Grin

2 slices. Four slice toasters haven't been around anywhere near as long as the phrase.

But does the phrase predate toasters? What would 'a round' be if you're working with a toasting fork?

Ineedaduvetday · 09/10/2022 18:07

I'd be pissed off with anything less than 2 slices.

Darhon · 09/10/2022 18:08

Slice is 1. Round is 2

So ask for 2 rounds...

What sort of weirdos eat just one slice of toast?

Well quite! Two is a standard portion I'd have thought. So to me a round of toast would be 2 slices.

<Holds out for the MN competitive under eating klaxon to go off and be told if they ate 2 slices they wouldn't eat again until March.>

TimeforZeroes · 09/10/2022 18:23

I’d say two slices - otherwise surely you’d just say, ‘a slice of toast.’

NaiceLeftie · 09/10/2022 18:26

A round of toast is one slice but a round of sandwiches has two slices of bread, so one round of toasted sandwiches has two rounds of toast in it 🤯

I don't think I ever say slice. I always say round.

EnormousStuffedMarrow · 09/10/2022 18:36

My mum always used to say 'a round' when asking how many sandwiches you wanted.

It drive me mad because I never knew what she meant and how many slices of bread were involved.
I still don't.

Clevs · 09/10/2022 18:42

One slice.

neighboursmustliveon · 09/10/2022 18:47

2 slices is a round, 1 slice is a slice not a round.

newtb · 09/10/2022 18:50

A round
Toast - 1 slice
Sandwiches - 2 rounds of bread

Thinkbiglittleone · 09/10/2022 19:04

1 piece of toast.

RoseAndRose · 09/10/2022 19:05

1 round = 1 slice

Just as 1 round of bread (untoasted) = 1 slice

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 09/10/2022 19:14

For me a round of toast is making toast for a group.

If I offer to do a round of toast and people say yes, I'd ask if they wanted one or two slices.

Snowpaw · 09/10/2022 19:16

I thought a round of toast is like a round of drinks - so enough toast for however many people are wanting it in the room e.g “let’s all have a round of toast”.

PinotPony · 09/10/2022 19:19

My mum is very much like Hyacinth Bucket.... we were always taught that a round of toast is one slice cut diagonally in half. Preferably served in a toast rack for guests to help themselves.

caringcarer · 09/10/2022 19:24

It's one slice of toast cut from a round bloomer loaf.

OperaStation · 09/10/2022 19:37

Newcatbrowntail · 09/10/2022 14:11

1 slice cut in half diagonally

And if it was cut in half any other way it wouldn’t be a round?!

Why. A round means two slices of toast.

Totally does

ofwarren · 09/10/2022 21:22

So the dictionary is wrong? 🤔

Quirrelsotherface · 09/10/2022 21:23

One slice.
