To be agog at the price of dish and chips?

Don't have stuff from the chippy very often but went today. Standard take out place in the north.

We ordered:
2 × fish and chips
1 x pie and chips
1 x curry sauce
4 x tom sauce packets
3 x drinks

It cost £37! Is this really how much they cost now or were we ripped off?

We stopped getting Chinese takeaways some time ago once the dishes got close to £10.

We were used to cheap fish for far too long. Anything that gets people eating less cod is a positive in my book.

Fact is we still have plenty of cheap fish. Sardines, mackerel, sprats, mussels, plaice, bream, hake... all great value but people seem to be obsessed with the relatively bland, predictable, unsustainable cod. If there was plenty to go round it wouldn't be so expensive, surely people understand that?

Plaice and chips is still slightly more expensive than cod isn't it? Although cod is catching up.

And who on earth eats sprats and chips or sardines and chips?

I don't think British culture should have to die off because of Brexit.

If you're paying 15 quid for a piece of cod, have you considered either a different fish, or just buying it and cooking it yourself?

And a fiver for chips? You could buy 5kg of potatoes with that.

You could buy the same amount of cod from a monger for about a fiver.

Are you including the cost of buying a deep fat fryer?

Ifailed · 09/01/2023 12:29

in my local fishmonger, Cod costs £7.35 for two 150g fillets, £4 for 200g of Haddock, and a 240g fillet of Plaice is £6.60. So Haddock is the cheapest.

You ever been to mainland Europe?

Not necessary if you've got a large pan. I'll include the price of the oil though.

No-one who has voluntarily paid £5 for chips is in any position to complain.

housemaus · 09/01/2023 13:57

Just added it up on my local chippy..

Assuming normal-size fish (not the king size) - 2 fish & chips is £14

Pie and chips is £4.60

A large curry sauce is £1.20

3 cans would be £3.60

Sauce is 20p each so 80p

So £24.20. Also in the north.

Even at the chippy where we used to live which was very snobby posh that'd cost you £26.

Yes mainland Europe is the main market for the fish caught in British waters which is why nobody in the British fishing industry should have voted to disrupt our trade links with Europe, but in our British culture we don't eat battered mackerel and chips do we? Or battered sprats and chips.

Fish and chips from the chippy are part of British culture. Why are you so keen to drive chip shops out of business?

And increase business for fire stations?

verdantverdure · 09/01/2023 14:15

£31 in our chip shop for the items on the OP. Surrey Hants border

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 09/01/2023 14:46

Does anyone remember the callouts to the fire brigade for chip pan fires? Back in the day it was a regular thing !

Blueuggboots · 09/01/2023 14:50

I went to a chip shop on the coast near York last week.
3 portions of chips, 2 battered sausages, 4 ketchup sachets and a sage and onion fritter was £14. I was well impressed!!!

Befanadi · 09/01/2023 14:54

I'm not really a fan of fish and chips so don't know, but even if it's no longer the dirt cheap meal option it once was, it still must be one of the cheapest takeaways you can buy ?

Ifailed · 10/01/2023 09:20

You can get a burger and fries from McDonalds for £2.38.

Igglepiggleslittletoe · 10/01/2023 09:30

I got a cheeseburger happy meal in maccers recently for 3 pound AND it came with a 4 piece jigsaw.

Not to boast but I made it all by myself too.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/01/2023 09:53

But McDonalds isn't the same quality as freshly made fish and chips. I'm not one for the 'it's McDs so it must be shite' narrative but a cheeseburger happy meal has a tiny amount of mince and potatoes and a lot of shite cheese and bread.

Fish and chips is a decent sized piece of good quality fish in batter that doesn't tend to contain any rubbish, served with chips made from fresh potatoes. Plus the whole meal is probably at least twice the size of a cheese burger and small fries, so would provide two people with a similarly sized meal of better quality.

Or if you're just buying for one, you could get small fish and chips or if you're fortunate to live in Yorkshire, a fishcake that is like a miniature version of fish and chips for a similar price to a happy meal.

54isanopendoor · 10/01/2023 11:31

Scottish Borders.
fish & chips £9.50
sausage or haggis or nuggets or fishcakes or ribs & chips £6.50
portion of chips £3.00 / £3.50 (these have reduced in size by 33% too sadly)
Goodness knows what their running costs are now though.
It's the only takeaway for 10miles & a long established local business.
But I certainly can't afford it & the Friday night queues are long gone.
They survive on the High School lunch trade I think?

Wow that is really good value. I am in Dublin and there was only two of us last night. Chicken with cashews in chilli sauce with noodles and chicken curry with boiled rice delivered cost 24euro.

Yes it's very good value and also a very good Chinese which is why we travel 6 miles to go to it. Sometimes we get one on our way home from somewhere like a day in Dublin😜
