To be agog at the price of dish and chips?

Don't have stuff from the chippy very often but went today. Standard take out place in the north.

We ordered:
2 × fish and chips
1 x pie and chips
1 x curry sauce
4 x tom sauce packets
3 x drinks

It cost £37! Is this really how much they cost now or were we ripped off?

We stopped getting Chinese takeaways some time ago once the dishes got close to £10.

I think that’s a bit high. For £33 we had:

1 large cod
1 fish cake
3 pies
2 large sausages
2 large battered sausages
2 large portions of chips
5 cans coke / sprite

Midlands

89redballoons · 07/10/2022 14:49

That would have been just over £37 in my local chippy, too. I'm in Bristol.

There has been quite a bit in the press about how the fish and chip industry has been hit hard by various price rises this year. Eg this Guardian article. And that's from before energy bills went up as much as they have now.

emmathedilemma · 07/10/2022 14:52

I just priced that up on my local chippy website and for standard size fish suppers and 500ml bottles of coke that came to £30.30.

PinkSyCo · 07/10/2022 14:59

Just priced it up on just eat and it comes to £28.40, so yes I do think yours was a bit expensive.

Notplayingball · 07/10/2022 15:00

I can! But only if I have not eaten most of the day.

Notplayingball · 07/10/2022 15:00

That was in response to managing a fish supper.

Daisy12789 · 07/10/2022 15:07

I also was in shock at this last week! We had one large chips, one cod and a portion of halloumi (3 slices) and it was £25!!

kitchenplans · 07/10/2022 15:12

I just priced it up at my local chippy

2x regular cod (12.40) = 24.80
1x pie(5.20)=5.20
3 x regular chips (4.60) = 13.80
1x curry sauce (2.50) =2.50
3 x cans of drink (1.95) = 5.85
2 x ketchup sachets (50p) = 1.00

Grand total =£53.15

We don't eat fish and chips anymore!

Link in case is understandably so astounded by the prices that they don't believe me!

Danikm151 · 07/10/2022 15:17

That would have been less than £20 near me only because the drinks are pricer. Down the road it would have been closer to £30 because the manager of that chippy seems to put his prices up every week.
it used to be £3.50 for a pie and chips, now he charges over £6

idonotmind · 07/10/2022 15:17

11 quid for F&C? It's unbelievable

Rosehugger · 07/10/2022 15:18

Our fish and chip shop is still cheaper than other takeaways but more like £10 for a cod, £12 for haddock (it does serve two though, absolutely massive) chips about £4 - but again, even a regular portion is anough for two. And it's cheaper if you actually pick them up from the shop of course. It's really good so I don't begrudge them charging what they need to.

Georgeskitchen · 07/10/2022 15:18

Fish and large chips at our local chippy £6.40 (NW England)
Very large portion plenty for 2. The drinks do push the price up , better off buying a big bottle of pop from the supermarket!!

Sh05 · 07/10/2022 15:29

We order 2 large fish and chips, two kebab rolls and one cheese pie for £21.50
Fish and chips is the only takeaway we still get, once a month max as it's the only thing left that's not sky high prices.
We are in Bolton, north west

Sh05 · 07/10/2022 15:30

That's for 7 of us I should include so large really is large

QuitMoaning · 07/10/2022 15:30

There isn't much excuse for poor performance on chips. All they need to do is bung potatoes into hot oil
🤣🤣. Yes, that is all it is. Nothing to do with the correct type of potatoes, stored correctly and the right temperature of oil.

We have a F+C shop and loads around us are handing their keys in as they just cannot make it work. Fish, potatoes, oil and then energy costs keep rising at an eye watering rate. We have vowed that he soon will not take a salary so we can keep the business going and pay staff wages, and we shall live on my salary which is doable.
for reference, an average monthly gas bill for a fish and chip shop was £500, it is now £1,500.

Sh05 · 07/10/2022 15:31

I get the drinks separately from the Farmfoods across the road and the chippy don't do deliveries.

makingmiracles · 07/10/2022 13:55

Sounds about standard, we have 2xlarge cod, 2xlarge chips, 2 battered sausages, one savloy and that’s usually around £35

takeout for us is a once in a while treat, Chinese usually costs us around £55

we always stick to our local Chinese or fish and chips mind you as last time we ordered dominios/kfc the total for those both came to around £75!!!

How many people are you feeding to spend £75 in kfc 😮

There’s 4 of us and Iv never spent over £30.

QuitMoaning · 07/10/2022 15:32

Oh and by the way, the delivery companies take 30% as a cut of the bill, HMRC takes 20% so there isn’t a lot left for the business to pay for raw ingredients and pay wages/rent/electricity/gas etc.

Ignore me… I read it wrong!🤣

Longdistance · 07/10/2022 15:34

That’s pricey even with drinks.
When we order for 2 adults and 2 dc we only have a large chips between us. Never chips for each meal, they’d never get eaten.

nokidshere · 07/10/2022 15:36

2 × fish and chips
1 x pie and chips
1 x curry sauce
4 x tom sauce packets
3 x drinks

That lists costs £45.76 at our local chippy

girlmom21 · 07/10/2022 15:36

Large fish and chips by us is about a tenner but our chippy do a mini fish and chip special with curry/mushy peas/gravy for £5.50

GasPanic · 07/10/2022 14:04

How many people on here can actually eat a large fish and chips in one go ?

I don't think there is anywhere recently that I have been to where I could handle a large fish and chips as a normal meal - if I starve myself I can.

It's also worth noting the large is much better value than the small typically.

I could easily eat a large fish and chips and would probably have room for pudding as well.

You're right - it'd feed a family of four here.

LOL jk, I had a large the other day but only because the 1 year old grabs at my fish constantly Grin

HuzzahIndeed · 07/10/2022 15:41

@QuitMoaning do deliveroo and all them really take 30%?
I knew they took a chunk but that is huge.
