To be agog at the price of dish and chips?

Don't have stuff from the chippy very often but went today. Standard take out place in the north.

We ordered:
2 × fish and chips
1 x pie and chips
1 x curry sauce
4 x tom sauce packets
3 x drinks

It cost £37! Is this really how much they cost now or were we ripped off?

We stopped getting Chinese takeaways some time ago once the dishes got close to £10.

We had chippy tea this week and was £11 for the four of us!

one large battered sausage
2 small battered sausage
one cod
one large chips to share

it was enough, but if my kids were older we’d have needed more chips

Mumsnet bingo right there! Wink

PeloFondo · 07/10/2022 18:40

I usually get one of the meal deals but fish and chips is £6.60 here
Battered sausage with chips and curry sauce £4.20 with free scraps which is loads (and not in a competitive under eating way!)

Is it posh fish and chips or from a kebab shop? Has the shop won any rewards? You can get really exspensive fish and chips sometimes.

PeloFondo · 07/10/2022 18:43

This was £4.20

DH got hardly any change out of £50 recently for

1x cod
1x skate
1 x large battered sausage
3 x regular sausage
1 x mushy peas
2 x large chips

I don't think it's ever really been a cheap meal unless you get a bag of chips.

Pava22 · 07/10/2022 18:45

That's cheap. I don't think people realise sometimes that businesses need to charge enough to pay the bills and staff and have a bit of money left for profit, decoration, reinvestment. People don't realise how much, rent, business rates, corporation tax, VAT, insurance, utilities, and stock actually amounts too....

Then when the business can't pay the xosts because customers want as cheap as possible everyone complains that they closed.... its not easy to run a business any more. Im also in the trade...

Pava22 · 07/10/2022 18:46

The part of the UK you live also plays a huge factor. If down south it will be more expensive above than up north due to business rates and rent.

Shinyandnew1 · 07/10/2022 18:49

The portions in our local our massive so DH and I share a cod and chips! We have drinks and ketchup at home as well.

Bellaphant · 07/10/2022 18:54

It's gone up a fair bit at ours recently, but they've started doing offers mon-weds, things like two pies, two chips and two 'sides' (beans, peas or sauce) for £10, dinners that are picky bits (cod bites, scampi, small sausages, chips and a drink) for around £12. So not the actual fish, which is the expensive bit.

Chocolatedip · 07/10/2022 19:34

£22.30 excluding pie as they don’t sell it. I’m in the SE. Also now getting chips for dinner thanks to this thread.

LikeTearsInRain · 07/10/2022 19:37

It’s full of sat fat and poor quality carbs anyway. So no loss.

HighlandPony · 07/10/2022 19:40

Our is haddie not cod but it’s £7 odd for a large fish supper so 2 bits fish and chips. They don’t do pie but I’m assuming it would be like a black pudding or spicy haggis or sausage supper and they’re £4.50 adult portions or £3 kids. Nobody gets sachets you just ask for “everything on” and you get salt vinegar and brown sauce on. Juice is as juice is priced, we don’t get juice out there we get it at the costcutter next door

InCheesusWeTrust · 07/10/2022 19:40

I was so surprised it took this long for "carbs" to make an appearance 😁

CaptainBarbosa · 07/10/2022 19:48

It sounds about right, £7/8 for pie/fish and chips.

I mean me and DS just have one small chips and 2 sausages as a treat and it's like £5 🤣 we then sit on the beach front promenade eating them out of the paper.

I don't do chips in the winter, it's not the same eating them in your house lol

TheSummerPalace · 07/10/2022 19:49

I reckon it would be around £33.70 here, but there would have to be a bottle of ketchup, as they don’t do portions; and it’s assuming 3 cans of Coca Cola not 500 ml bottles. It was also regular cod - haddock x 2 would have been another £5.20.

We always go into the Coop for a big bottle of Coca Cola; I wouldn’t buy cans from a takeaway. We would also have our own ketchup at home! DH and I share a portion of chips nowadays! (Our appetites are not what they were in our 20s)

We gave up with takeaway pizzas - imo, they are v expensive for flour, water, cheese and tomatoes! I’d rather have Chinese any day!

FindingMeno · 07/10/2022 19:52

We normally get a large chips between 4 of us, and would never buy ketchup and drinks from the chippie.
Always spend less than £20, and dh always has a kebab which is the priciest thing.

onmywayamarillo · 07/10/2022 21:01

£9 here for large cod and chips!

ilovepixie · 07/10/2022 21:32

I'm in a seaside resort in Northern Ireland and it varies from £7 to £11 for a fish supper. The £11 one is lovely and massive so could do 2 people, but not me as I'm greedy lol.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/10/2022 21:42

Medium cod and chips £9.95
Medium cod £8.95

Does for DH and me.

I usually order haddock but that has been marked up to a whopping £13.50.
They have also stopped the cod bites and chips children's meal.
Really good fish and chips though and they are always v v busy.

girlfriend44 · 07/10/2022 21:47

Dish and chips lol.
Make your own chips much cheaper and nicer.

Threelittlelambs · 07/10/2022 21:53

We now go to the cash and carry they do the crispy chicken burgers and chip shop chips for £10 and I can make several meals from those - 5 of us here and it’s extortionate!

Anyone for a Fondo party?

Nat6999 · 07/10/2022 23:52

Cod is more expensive than fillet steak, takeaway food will become more of a luxury than just a once a week treat. I used to have an Indian every Saturday evening, it used to cost me £18 for Chicken Dopiaza, pilau rice, Onion Bhaji & salad, poppadoms & pickle tray, that meal now costs £24.

yawn

is it being so cheerful that keeps you going?

gogohmm · 08/10/2022 00:11

We pay £11 for cod and chips, £9 for pie and chips, £1.50 for curry sauce. No idea on drinks as never bought one. Sauce is 30p.

£37 would be roughly the same here - sw
