To be agog at the price of dish and chips?

Don't have stuff from the chippy very often but went today. Standard take out place in the north.

We ordered:
2 × fish and chips
1 x pie and chips
1 x curry sauce
4 x tom sauce packets
3 x drinks

It cost £37! Is this really how much they cost now or were we ripped off?

We stopped getting Chinese takeaways some time ago once the dishes got close to £10.

The shocking thing is you didn't buy mushy peas 😁

£28.30 from the one near us, assuming large fish and chips.
These are delivery prices though, you can get a small 'walk in' fish and chips for £4.80 which is actually a really good size.

Lincslady53 · 07/10/2022 16:42

We are in Lancashire, the same order in our chippy would be £30, from one on the more expensive chippy near us.

QuitMoaning · 07/10/2022 16:55

HuzzahIndeed · 07/10/2022 15:41

@QuitMoaning do deliveroo and all them really take 30%?
I knew they took a chunk but that is huge.

Starts off in your first year as 25% as long as you are with only one carrier.
We now do Deliveroo and Uber Eats and they are both 30%.
Genuinely don’t know if the shop will survive.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 07/10/2022 17:02

One medium cod has gone up to £7.50 recently in my local chippy, which I was quite shocked by. I ended up sharing one large one with dd, plus chips, which actually was plenty.

QuitMoaning · 07/10/2022 17:03

For the sake of openness I have just added up the OP order in our shop (coming in, not via Deliveroo etc) and it is £31.55.

ChickpeaPie · 07/10/2022 17:10

We had chippy tea this week and was £11 for the four of us!

one large battered sausage
2 small battered sausage
one cod
one large chips to share

it was enough, but if my kids were older we’d have needed more chips

DogInATent · 07/10/2022 17:26

Cod is over-fished. It should be priced higher to push people onto other species. The price of tatties, cooking oil, and the energy to heat it have all been rising.

It's no longer a cheap meal to feed the masses.

SaltMarsh · 07/10/2022 17:27

When we were last on the North Norfolk coast last month, we ordered fish and chips for two and a tub of mushy peas to share. It was a fish and chip shop takeaway in a coastal village. It came to just under £22. I thought that was pricey.

The portions of fish and chips were not large at all, served in quite small cardboard boxes. Luckily, we don't want large portions, but as others have said, I'd almost compare the ones we got to the much cheaper Yorkshire mini portions for children/pensioners when we've visited the coast there!

mycatisannoying · 07/10/2022 17:28

Local chippy here is over £12 for fish & chips.

That'd be £26 at our chippy. I allowed for regular chips with the pie and 25p/sauce as they don't list it. I wouldn't buy drinks or sauce though, in act I can't actually remember when we last had fish & chips as DD is veggie and DS doesn't like them.

Deliveroo is now trying to get prople off ubereats with offers like lower comission, advertising etc.
We took the plunge because uber was shite anyway, so far ok. Would be mor eif we dropped just eat, but that one brings money more than uber did

No chance of sharing 1 large bag of chips between four of us here 🫣

Yes, we are thinking of going into Just Eat. In for a penny, in for a pound.
I work in shop (for free) on Fridays and Saturdays, on top of my actual paid day job.

TenoringBehind · 07/10/2022 17:54

Would cost the same where I live

America12 · 07/10/2022 17:55

We got
4 cod
3 chips
One peas
One gherkin
£47 😳 South East.

I was being a bit tight and trying my luck with the chips but it was just enough, it was a large box full of chips and my kids are 5 and 6 so I didn’t give them loads. Im
not a competitive under eater 😬 but I also don’t think we need a plate overflowing with chips and it was nice to not throw any away which we do when we buy more

Squashpocket · 07/10/2022 18:22

In my head:

Fish and chips - £5
Curry sauce - £1
Packet of sauce - 20p
Can of drink - £1

In reality -

Double that

😭

Doggiedoodoos · 07/10/2022 18:23

Just looked on justeat at my local chippie and it would be 39euro for that in Dublin.

You've got the curry sauce and the pop right

Longdistance · 07/10/2022 18:27

I’ve now made fish and chips for the family.
Haddock from Iceland £3.33 (3 for £10 offer)
Skin on fries from Lidl £1.30
Cooking oil £1.99
I used plain flour, two eggs and bread crumbs (from bread ends).

SuperCamp · 07/10/2022 18:32

Here Cod and chips is about £12, pie and chips probably £6, so that takes you to £30. Drinks @£1.50 takes you to £34-50, don’t know how much curry sauce and sachets are.

Roselilly36 · 07/10/2022 18:37

Doesn’t take much thinking though does it, the cost of cooking oil/energy/fresh fish has gone up in price exponentially. The price increase will be passed onto the consumer, if these businesses are to remain in business.

EndlessMagpies · 07/10/2022 18:37

Our local chippies seem to serve out portions of chips by the bucketload, so we can manage with one medium portion of chips between four hungry adults. That cuts the cost down a little bit.

But I agree, the prices have gone through the roof, which is why we are having supermarket fish and homemade chips tonight.

Mardyface · 07/10/2022 18:40

I feel it's my duty to have F&C tonight now (don't worry @BitOutOfPractice I will be keeping the newspaper as xmas wrapping once I've scraped the grease off).
