To be agog at the price of dish and chips?

Don't have stuff from the chippy very often but went today. Standard take out place in the north.

We ordered:
2 × fish and chips
1 x pie and chips
1 x curry sauce
4 x tom sauce packets
3 x drinks

It cost £37! Is this really how much they cost now or were we ripped off?

We stopped getting Chinese takeaways some time ago once the dishes got close to £10.

I'm in London and it is £9.

Large portion of chips has gone up in the last year by £2.

( This is the decent chippy.)

Listening to the radio a month or so ago, and a Pizza takeaway owner in Devon said customers had stopped buying things like drinks from him as you can get them cheaper elsewhere. The last time I was in the chip shop a younger couple were deciding not to get items like drinks and sauce because of the cost. I don't think they realised that everyone would pop into the local co-op to buy drinks and sauces as while an expensive supermarket, it is cheaper than the chip shop.

InCheesusWeTrust · 07/10/2022 14:06

The boggest culprit is the oil actually. It went up SO much. Unbelievable.
You get 25% rise there, 20% there and 10% there, it all unfortunately counts together. 😫

Just looked at what it would cost in my local chip shop (SE England). £35.40 not including sachets of ketchup as they don’t seem to sell them - so very similar to you.

£8 for a regular cod and £3 for regular chips - it’s the chips that shocked me more.

Although having said that, one portion of regular chips does serve 2 or 3 hungry adults so not quite as bad.

Rebelmcstreettuff · 07/10/2022 14:08

Yes £7.70 for a cod by me!
We had the chippy last week and it was overpriced and vile(undercooked chips and the pie was so hard on the top I couldn't cut through it)
McDonald’s tonight for us at least that's usually consistant.

PinkSyCo · 07/10/2022 14:10

Granted I’ve not had fish and chips from the chippy for a while, (but really want some now!) but I would have thought that would have come to around £30 here in the south east. Fish is so expensive, a can of drink is usually a quid and I’d be interested to know how much you paid for the ketchup.

CallTheMobWife · 07/10/2022 14:12

So your utilities are going up, yuor food shopping is going up, everything is going up, but you're suprised that takeaway food is also going up? A meal for 3 for 37 pounds sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

FinallyHere · 07/10/2022 14:13

While fish and chips is not the cheapest, I agree with PP pointing out that the mark up on drinks and the tomato sauce is high.

Buying drinks from a supermarket would make it more affordable as an occasional treat.

CasperGutman · 07/10/2022 14:13

Your list comes to £28.60 at our local chippy in South Wales. Your prices are higher, but not outrageously so. Everything is going up!

GasPanic · 07/10/2022 14:14

@Rebelmcstreettuff

For me Mcdonalds chips are awful. Chip shop chips are much nicer.

Find a better chippy - I always go to one further away because it does the best fish and chips. There isn't much excuse for poor performance on chips. All they need to do is bung potatoes into hot oil.

confused162 · 07/10/2022 14:15

That sounds incredibly cheap to me. I had large fish and chips last night, I can easily manage on my own, it was £11.00. I was thinking that was average price probably? Im in SW

54isanopendoor · 07/10/2022 14:16

South East Scotland here.
Good local chippy but F&C is now £9.50, sausage & chips £6.50.
Too expensive for us now.
We buy fish from supermarket & treat ourselves to £5 of 'chippy chips' to add on.

RaininSummer · 07/10/2022 14:17

I haven't bought fish and chips for around 25 years but that price is horrifying even if justifiable. A bag of of oven chips and a box of fish comes in at less than a tenner so I will stick with that along with peas, tomato and a cuppa.

FarmerRefuted · 07/10/2022 14:17

That's expensive, over a tenner cheaper at our local chippy and that's with delivery charge included (also in Northern England). I didn't include packets of ketchup as they're free.

We stopped buying the fish as its so expensive now.

We also share chips as our shop is generous with their servings.

So for 5 of us we usually get

2 x large chips
3 x battered jumbo sausage
2 x Savloy
1 x curry sauce

Usually comes in around £20

womaninatightspot · 07/10/2022 14:17

Nearly 10 quid for fish and chips where I am. It’s nearly 40 quid for five for food. Drinks bought from supermarket next door. It used to be a payday treat but can’t justify it now. Equivalent to a half a weekly food shop.

How many people on here can actually eat a large fish and chips in one go ?

I don't think there is anywhere recently that I have been to where I could handle a large fish and chips as a normal meal - if I starve myself I can.

It's also worth noting the large is much better value than the small typically.

Sounds about right to me.

i was in the co-op earlier which I know is expensive and a fresh pizza is £6.50. I swear they were £4.50 recently. To me that’s getting on for take away prices in my mind but I haven’t had a take away pizza for ages and I suspect they’re no longer £8! 😂. I didn’t buy one, will stock up next time I’m in Aldi.

I picked up a cheese pizza in our co op and nearly fell over at the price ! I can't remember the last time I got one but I'm sure it was around £3. DD ended up with one from the frozen section at around £2 ! Sainsbury's do 2 x large pizzas, garlic bread , dip and bottle of drink for £10 which is much better and nicer! No doubt that will soon go up!

Nat6999 · 07/10/2022 14:21

At my local chip shop Cod is £11, a bag of chips is £5, what used to be a cheap meal now isn't.

slowquickstep · 07/10/2022 14:22

Fish is expensive and rightly so

Frida9 · 07/10/2022 14:24

Actually just looked up my nearest chip shop on deliveroo and it's £10.70 for a standard haddock supper! I don't even live in a rich area, that's on the middle of a council estate! I get that bills are going up but how is anyone affording this?

namechangeforthis66 · 07/10/2022 14:25

Sounds about right - it's £8/9 for fish and chips here plus you had another meal then the sauces and drinks which always bump things up. I keep multipack drinks on the car to save having to pay out for those individually

Notplayingball · 07/10/2022 14:26

£9 roughly for a fish supper. It's getting ridiculous now.

ChessieFL · 07/10/2022 14:28

Agree it’s not a cheap meal. Luckily our local chippy does huge portions of chips and we’ve found that 2 large cod and 1 large portion of chips feeds three of us comfortably so we don’t buy three separate meals.

StillNotWarm · 07/10/2022 14:46

Prices are rocketing for fish and chips right now.
We'd never buy drinks or ketchup.
Our standard order is 2fish&Chips, 1 fish, 1 large sausage (we split the chips between 2, so the above does 2 adults, one teen and one child). Used to come to £20. Now just over £25. NE seaside town.
