And submit them.
New cap tomorrow = price hike.

That it.
That's the thread.

Thank you OP. Just to add this doesn't apply to those with smart meters as readings will be sent automatically to the supplier.

BooksAndHooks · 30/09/2022 09:59

Doing all the excess washing today before I take a last reading. I usually do all the bedding etc at the weekend but may as well do it whilst it’s a little cheaper.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/09/2022 10:03

It also doesn''t apply to anyone on a fix that is lower than the new capped rates.

But you don't need to send them in today. It's a good idea to read the meters in case the estimate for the price change is way off, but last time so many people tried to submit readings that websites were crashed and people started losing their minds over what was, for most people, likely to be a few pence.

Take photos of your meters later today by all means, but no need to do anything else until your next bill comes. You never know, the estimate might work in your favour.

Beautiful3 · 30/09/2022 10:06

I was told to take a reading on the 1st October. Do you think I should take it today and submit it tomorrow.

You’d think that - but my smart meter doesn’t actually work!

Take your meter readings as close to the end of the day folks, and submit them!

Good thread @TheClitterati

FluffySocksAndHotChocolate · 30/09/2022 10:08

You all need to check your tariffs too.

My company swapped me over a day early!!

To remind you to read your meters today?
RafaistheKingofClay · 30/09/2022 10:10

Just to add. Most companies will give you a few days to submit the reading. We don’t want to crash the phone lines and websites again.

Watching

Hoppinggreen · 30/09/2022 10:12

I was going to but according to Octopus my DD is actually going down next month so I’m not sure I should

Our energy provider has randomly managed to connect our smart meter so do we need to?

Givenitarest · 30/09/2022 10:18

It’s a very wet day today so I’m going to have to wash and then dry my towels in the tumble drier as I’ve not got the heating on. Normally leave it to the weekend but will do it today to save a few pence. I hope my suppliers don’t change their tariffs a day early like yours have Fluffy - are they allowed to do that?!

Do we have till midnight to provide our readings?

Vinorosso74 · 30/09/2022 10:19

Done ours. I have had an email from EDF to say they're accepting the readings up to 7th Oct, likely to stop the website crashing.

Ask them for the peace of mind, but British Gas told me I don't have to do anything as they take readings from smart meter.

SettingPrecedents · 30/09/2022 10:22

I’m with Shell, they recommend taking photos of your meters today, then submitting them at any time before the end of October, so as to avoid the website crashing!

Rosehugger · 30/09/2022 10:34

I have a smart meter.

Not particularly smart though as it only tells me cost per day and not kw/h.

Shiningstarr · 30/09/2022 10:39

I have a smart meter, so it will
Be done automatically. 👍🏼

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/09/2022 10:15

Thank you
I did watch it but I’m still not sure whether to do it.
We currently pay £280 pm and according to Octopus this should be £263 pm and we are slightly in credit
I won’t drop the amount but if I submit now is there a chance they could hike it up?

Yes British Gas reminded me and said it can be any time in the next two weeks

rbe78 · 30/09/2022 10:57

@Hoppinggreen

So your monthly direct debit isn't the same as your bill. They work your monthly payment out by projecting how much you'll use over the year and then averaging that out over 12 months. Otherwise you'd be paying loads in winter, and not much in summer, which would be crap for most people's budgeting.

How much you are actually billed for depends on how much you use. In the winter, you will probably be billed for more than the amount of your direct debit, and your account will go in to defecit for a few months. But in the summer, you will proably use less energy, and be billed less than your direct debit. But the extra from your DD will go to oaying off the debt you accrued with them in the winter, and you should balance out by mid-summer.
.
So yes, you should read your meter today/take a photo of it and submit later, because from tomorrow the price per unit will go up, and you might get billed the higher price for energy you used before the price rise (becasue if you don't have a smart meter they won't know when you used the energy).

Resisterance · 30/09/2022 10:57

Done! Thanks for the remainder

Raidtheice · 30/09/2022 11:02

I fixed at the end of August, mainly due to panicking about the further increases in January that were rumoured at the time. Because I fixed at the proposed cap rate, before government help was announced, I will actually be paying less as of tomorrow.

Treesuphooray · 30/09/2022 11:08

Done!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/09/2022 11:10

Thanks @xogossipgirlxo I looked on the app and it said not. I'm shocked. I put an electric heater on earlier and it shot up to red.

catandcoffee · 30/09/2022 11:11
